Thank you! Is it possible to check for gall in spring time during the pre-growth stage of the dahlias? I am planning to do the pre-growth in separate pots, so it would be easy to remove single dahlias in case of gall or other diseases - if detectable at that early stage.
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers9 күн бұрын
Thanks Thomas, that's a great question. I've certainly seen it in the early stages of growth but I don't think lack of obvious gall can guarantee there is no disease in the specimen. That's a convoluted way of saying "yes, but"

Very informative video. I'll be checking your channel for more information on gall in dahlias. Had several new (to me) varieties infected. They were disposed of after fall digging. I've read that I should dispose of the soil, but is it possible to plant another crop in that area?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers9 күн бұрын
Hi thanks for your kind words and question. There is certainly a chance of infecting other dahlias planted in the same soil, and some other species such as Chrysanthemums can also be infected. My advice would be to remove as much of the soil as practicable for instance a good shovelful along with the infected tubers. Then plant another species if possible.

Do cuttings have to come from tubers? Can they be taken from higher on the stems? Stem cuttings? Or side shoots with flower buds removed? Have you noticed a difference in tuber production from cuttings versus tubers? Thank you!
@MoorfieldFarmFlowersАй бұрын
Hi thanks for your question. You're right, you can use stem cuttings just as well - the earlier in the season the better. For instance when doing the first pinching out, you can replant the tips. They will be some way behind the originals though, so they may run out of time before they mature enough to flower. You will get a good collection of tubers from the cuttings so long as you get them started early. I'm not sure if you will automatically get more from tubers.

I have a question and I got so many different answers. Does planting 1 tuber give you a plant with less flowers for the season than planting clump? My wife and I want a lot of flowers for next year because our little daughter wants to sell bouquets next to the road. But at the same time we want to grow our tuber numbers for more plants.
@MoorfieldFarmFlowersАй бұрын
Hi Thanks for your question. Yes all other things being equal you will get more flowers from a clump, but how you prune them will have a big effect too, more pruning gives more (although smaller) flowers.

@ronin60442 ай бұрын
I see that you don't wash them, when you pull them out of the ground do you let them dry for a day or two before dividing? When do you clean the dirt from it because ours comes out from ground pretty dirty.
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers2 ай бұрын
@@ronin6044 thanks for your question Ronin. Opinions vary on the “correct” time to wash the tubers. Soil is said to protect the surface of the tubers until they harden off (a few days), but many people wash them immediately so you can’t go far wrong. Good luck with yours.

Good morning MFF, am I correct in assuming for the rule of 3 to operate well that there is a single tuber in each pot?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers4 ай бұрын
Hi Freddy, no, the rule applies to all. It does feel wasteful when a larger tuber clump is planted. I am suggesting the optimum stems for the soil to support is 3. So I would say consider always dividing your tubers to at least 4 or 5 tubers if you want to optimise your stock.
@KathyKumpula5 ай бұрын
I have just watched some of your videos and they are very well done and very informative! Just a question on the depth of the planted tuber. I am in Canada and like to plant my tubers 6 inches under the ground level, even if they have already sprouted. I plant sprout and all, usually burying the stem and it comes up just fine. This is the first time I have seen tubers planted with the tops at ground level. I had always thought that the new tubers are created under ground at the top of the original tuber. So in your case, where do the new tubers form?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers5 ай бұрын
Hi Kathy, thanks for your question. Yes you are right my tubers are planted quite high, they are routinely mulched so end up deeper. New tubers develop at or below the level of the originals in my experience so by the time they are dug out they are plenty deep enough. Hope this answers your question and I hope your growing season is going well.

I have a dark foliages type dahlia. My green ones root no problem but these cuttings are just sitting there doing nothing, including not dying. They’re in the open porch and get sun and are watered regularly. What else can I do? They’re almost two months old lol
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers5 ай бұрын
Yes some cuttings are just stubborn by nature. In this circumstance I would get one out and examine the cut surface. If there are no roots at all after weeks then they are unlikely to develop. You can try hormone rooting compound on the new cuttings next time around. Also I usually protect the cutting from drying out with a plastic bag until rooted.

Hi Leslie, searing is a technique we use for difficult flowers such as sunflower, but we don’t sear our Dahlias. If they are wilting we might add citric acid to the water to increase the rate of water uptake. Hope this helps.

i dont have the best luck with trying to root cuttings, i managed to root a few from side shoots. So if you wanted to plant the pot tuber after getting some cutting, can you plant out in the garden?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers5 ай бұрын
Hi Thanks for your question, Yes you can certainly plant the tuber out after taking some cuttings, although the tuber will become depleted as more cuttings are taken, and they are usually smaller than a standard tuber clump so there is less "headroom" to start with. My first time having Dahlias in pots and they have finished producing flowers for this year leaving the seed pod. What do I do now with them and will they grow back next year?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers6 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for your question. Once each flower begins to fade you should remove it by cutting the stem below it. This will allow more flowers to come, and they should keep flowering right up to the first frost. If you let a seed pod form the plant will "switch off" and stop producing flowers. Cut away your seed pods now, and after a week or so your dahlias will start to produce flowers again. Good luck!
