Great info! This relieved some of my hesitant plant mom guilt after I was recently gifted with an orchid that was crammed into a 4" pot without air holes. I only bought a 6" one with the air holes and thought I hadn't bought one big enough. Nope, we're good here. Thanks so much!

I really wish we could get bag babies here, but orchid growers are pretty scarce in rural Nebraska so I would just have to buy all of them. 😅

Does lava rock medium require daily watering?
@TheOrchidHut4 күн бұрын
It might, but depends on the orchid and how dry your climate is.

Can I ask you where you buy your wooden baskets? I have a couple that I bought a long time ago for my Orchids. Now I am looking to buy one for another hangling plant I have. Amazon has the baskets, but no hangers come with them, which I think is strange. Another seller has 3 baskets in different sizes with hangers, but I don't want to spend allot for three when I need one. Thank you.
@TheOrchidHut8 күн бұрын
I've never had just one source for these. I have ordered them from RePotMe and Amazon but have also found them at local nurseries in my area. I know what you mean not having to buy more than you need. They can be pricey depending on where you look, as well.

Yes…although I’m a little concerned about getting water in the leaf joints over winter. I think that is what led to the demise of a similar orchid I had. Ahhh, the challenge of orchid growing!!

Well, this one should be interesting. It's been a long time since I have seen bag babies in Knoxville. And that's probably a good thing. 😂

Hi Dana. I watched this video at least three times because I wanted to see how you managed to get all those roots into the pot but I noticed that you cut that part out. I've watched one of your previous videos showing how you went about this but when I've tried I always seem to crack the velamen, even after wetting the roots. Are there any tricks or tips I'm missing?
@TheOrchidHut9 күн бұрын
That’s the trouble with YT ‘short’ videos. They can only be 1 minute long so parts get cut out. Yes, there a couple of tricks. I’ll film it next time I have one with such roots. It involves very soaked roots and twisting the pot. YT will be allowing 3 minute short videos soon, so a little more content can be squeezed in!
@renatecormick73998 күн бұрын
@@TheOrchidHut I look forward to some longer shorts.

No newer video on these, and some have exited my collection. I have found the smaller ones more difficult to grow…not sure why.

I have a question. Can you use a self watering pot if your orchid has bark
@TheOrchidHut20 күн бұрын
Just bark is probably not the best setup for self watering, unless there is enough sphagnum moss to draw up the water. Self-watering for orchids often uses leca for the media. In addition, you have to consider that many orchids need a wet/dry cycle not suitable for self watering…and it also depends on your growing environment. Many variables to make this successful!

I find that orchids do so well mounted onn cork. It's strange you don't see more people using this kind of wood for orchids. Your popoki red is so pretty! And it looks so so happy cause those roots don't lie, haha. -L Love the hut as well.

One of my jairaks as well is a major climber, similar to a species. I like your channel and subscribed. Just found ya Nice video. And nice pots/technique I noticed mine are adapting the best in ceramic/terracotta compared to plastic. However. I believe I am going to mount one in cholla as I did get some specifically for a tolumnia. I was wondering. Have you ever had or seen or dealt with a Tolumnia calochilum or calochila. I am absolutely so interested in this species and missed my chance to order one that was available. But one day I will! So just looking to figure it out more and more

Thank you for watching and subscribing! I’ve only had the species bahamensis. I managed to keep it healthy with new growth and new roots for about 3 years, although it never bloomed. I think one, drier winter indoors under grow lights did it in. Will try again someday when I happen across another species.

Thanks for the update. I always lose some orchids when they go out to over-summer outside. I’m in a mid-Atlantic state and lost fair number of Cattleya growths to fungal rots from rain this year. Frustrating but par for the course. But I’ve never encountered web worms - Do they affect the orchids every year or do you think it’s just a one-year surge of their population because of this year’s odd weather patterns?
@TheOrchidHutАй бұрын
Our web worms are seasonal but usually isolated to a few trees here and there. For whatever reason, this year they multiplied (twice!) by the millions and were everywhere.
