They already were building a big house, then why they didn't go with hollow ceramic blocs and concrete? It is way way safer than wood and not much more expensive. This thing that collapsed is like building out of cardboard. For real americans, learn how to build things that last

Think outside the box/picture #1. There are TWO strong cripples likely close (<36inchs) together. One of which is not in picture. I do think that closer jack stud was "extra" and this would be sufficient in MOST applications. Think outside the box/picture #2, the 2x6 was over kill to insure it reached the targeted reinforcement zone within the concrete slab below. Perhaps the contractor threw in a few extra 2x6 to better position the load into the reinforced footing area. Other possibilities, the Six 2x6 are definitely > than two 2x4 cripples. I would believe this to be possibly done to give a more desirable "pillared finish" when they finish the basement.

I have been doing framing and construction for almost 30 years. The Forman should be fired if he was not. There was not enough shoring to start with, and even before it starts falling it looks like shit. The fact he had people in there working on the 3rd floor without sheeting any of the others could have killed everyone inside. When I was learning with my old man as a kid I remember he would nail diagonal shoring along the outside of the walls (basically acting like temp sheeting) as well as the interior ones. This was only ever done if the sheeting was not avail yet as he wanted to go up one more level, but never used for a whole 3 story building. Follow building codes and never cut corners… doing so costs money and lives

Another trick, if it's a 2 story building, tear the flooring above the wall out and see where the floor joists are.

They aught to be grateful they weren't inside when it collapsed. I cant believe people went inside that structure to build more onto it before any freaking LATERAL STABILITY was built into it... Insanity.

Americans know how to cheap out on housing. Concrete beams don't cost that much, the first floor would be more stable, and you can have a brick room incase of tornados. Nah, 100% wood, wanna die when the whole houses catches on fire falling down.

0:42 This construction is so messed up. Instead of using the hollow space of the steel beam to give the wooden beams a serious support, they nailed them to the filler wood with just 4 nails or screws. That is so much weaker construction.

The shorter 100% accurate answer is, load bearing walls always run perpendicular to the joists. 5 minutes in the attic area will save lots of drywall damage and time.

The sheathing alone does provide vibrational security, and yes, would naturally function as an exoskeleton. However, the sheathing alone should not be the only thing holding up the frame. Putting that kind of strain on the walls would not play nicely during a hurricane, though I suppose it is what it is. The chief issue there is... I. None of the walls are blocked, horizontal blocking should be at least three locations each stud bank. Bottom, center, and top, this is code mandatory, however, most builders that know what they're doing, will place blocking at the quarter points also, thus 5 locations. This is not counting the top plate and base. This would have prevented the studs from keeling in on one another. II. Improper transfer of loadbearing walls, there are clearly loadbearing walls that are not properly transferring the force down, though They can be observed at some points, there is clearly a lack at the bottom level. III. Windows are not correctly framed, code requires that every window bay have a strait to header stud, followed by a reinforcing brace, in the window bay itself. This base must be weight transferred to the stud base. Again, bare minimum, it will pass, but the inspector is going to be inclined to hit you over every little thing. Traditionally, there are three supports each side of the window. Two full length studs, and one brace. IV. The roof lacks a ridge beam, that is not code, also, the weight bearing walls are not supported down to the foundation. V. The structure is lacking secondary straps or tie members that transfer vibrational shock from the flooring to the wall, the structure is not properly braced. If I did not know better, I would say that this was the work of an intelligence spook, or a foreign operative, judging by the roof. Whoever engineered this thing knew exactly what they were doing, of course whoever built it was naturally blind to traditional building conventions, or was being trafficked. These building conventions if followed, result in a fluid and obstacle free inspection process.

Sheathing prevents "Wracking" which is what has taken place here. Insufficient Lateral Support. As a Chief Building Official (retired) I've seen this sort of thing often. Usually by people who have never built anything but got a new hammer and pouch for Xmas. They are going to look really stupid try to sheath the 2nd and 3rd floor walls. It is far easier (and stronger) to sheath the walls BEFORE you stand them up. They hold their Square and are fully laterally supported. If no "structural" sheathing is to be installed, then "Let-In" bracing is require and must incorporate EVERY STUD so they remain vertical when under Live/Dead Loads.

Since the Americans stop building our own houses back in the late 80,s the migrants have flooded America with junk built SLAB houses that will not last long enough to get the mortgage paid off.Millions of houses we best get back to training carpenters Masons and everything else because we have been had by all of these get Rich get out of Town Junk builders.and the so called building inspection and codes are no better than who is doing the inspections.junky Slab houses are nothing but future headaches.....
