What do you think we can do as civil engineers to attract the best engineering minds??

Better compensation! "We can't give you the pay raise you wanted." "Ok, that's unfortunate. Btw, I've accepted an offer from another company." "Wait why are you leaving?"

It truly is all about mindset and practicing applauding our peers and mentors, and being excited about learning from each other, instead of competing with each other i also totally agree that our work in the industry has been undermined and perceived as less valuable because of the way the business has driven us to be underpaid, and as engineers we need to back each other up thanks for being a positive presence in our industry !

Seems to me that we, the structural engineers, are the only ones who appreciate the value that we bring to the table.

Not sure what can be done about the race to the bottom outside of instituting a guild system with restricted membership and a floor under fees.

We need to move towards performance based design and away from prescriptive code design. The performance based design is more exciting and will tilt the scales towards the premium engineers. Prescriptive code design is keeping the corner cutting engineers alive. Material savings due to performance based design will allow us to charge more for premium fees

what a great perspective! I know a few engineers doing this type of work and it always impresses me!

I will say that videos like yours and others have rekindled a fire inside me. I have been working on doing renovations for my house. I have been working on doing design calculations and others stuff. I do plan on having a licensed engineer check my work. But I have enjoyed the process of solving problems and crunching numbers so much so that I am now looking at going to school for Engineering to be able to do this for a living. I'm still torn with going civil or architectural. May be a little late in going to school, but hey if it something I love, why not.

I love to hear this. and its never too late to do something new with your life. let the team and I know how your journey goes, whether you end up going back to school or not! do you enjoy structural calculations?

@Kestava_Engineering Yes, I do enjoy those. It's been fun doing some of the math so far with my place. Basically, what ignited that passion. So far my plan is to take some classes locally at a community College, found most of the math, chemistry, and physics can transfer over. Found it odd the statics of engineering did not, oh well. A university near by has a 2 plus 2 program to take 2 years there and move on to the larger one to finish with a bachelor's degree for civil engineering. Had looked at another one, but not sure about it. There's is a 5 year one to get a masters in architectural engineering. Not sure if I am able to go there, as the school is much farther away. But do need to get math classes caught up as the farthest I did reach was college algebra. So got to take some calculus and analytic geometry classes, hopefully starting this fall semester.

Rich, come work in bridge design! The DOTs in our area value quality a LOT and they will pay for it. They'll still obviously negotiate fee with you, but the consulting side of public transportation projects in our state isn't really a race to the bottom like I hear about with private sector building design.

come to the "dark side" (bridge engineering) lol jk! I gotta role my sleeves up and get involved in a bridge project soon!

I agree with your points, and you've raised a valid perspective. However, I find the video's hook somewhat contradictory. Aren't the engineers with KZbin channels the ones actively sharing knowledge with the community? After all, that's the purpose of their channels. Despite this, I appreciate the message overall. I'm fully supportive of fostering communities. Cheers

Holding all the liability for a structure and racing to the lowest fees to design it is insane. Professional society should set standard rates that cannot be undercut for the sake of competition that properly reflect the value of any kind of engineer.

I get its a fine line between a "union" or "free market" but if there are engineers that say ill do it for half because im stubborn or get talked into doing a job for half fees because they can advocate for their great work then we as an industry get hit hard. you make great points!

I have seen first-hand the quality of service that can come from the undercutting mindset and it is definitely not good for the profession. I feel like the minimum fees would probably have to be done at the state levels by the local SEI or ASCE Chapter. Fees can definitely vary dramatically by location, and it seems to me like a state level issue for sure. However, that is a steep mountain to climb there.

well said! I know im not "solving and problems" in this video but wanted to at a bare minimum start the conversation on this subject. Its not about engineers competing to do it for less, it should be about engineers coming together and fighting for their value. if EVERYONE has a high standard then we all win, and our designs will be better for it!

I feel like it is worse in structural, I can't really tell other people studying civil engineering to go for this specialization when others offer similar compensation. I work in power and I don't use my education fully, but I can't see myself switching to buildings with these problems you are talking about. I would need to be paid much more to go back which I can't see happening unless the whole system changes.

thanks for your insight Tony - structural definitely struggles the most when it comes to valuing our work.
