I am so proud of this student for bettering himself in this public forum so other future students can learn as well. My daughter and I viewed many mock check rides so these helped a lot!

Anyone trying to prepare for an instrument checkride, download pilots cafe for free (or donate), and make flashcards out of all the acronyms. Your 90min will be far better spent. 66HITS, GRABCARD, MARVELOUS VFRC500, all the different IFR altitude abbreviations (DA/MDA/MEA/MOCA, etc.) When studying weather theory, we came up with the acronym’s DOC and ICU for high and low pressure systems. High pressure because docks are higher than the water, air moves downward, outward, and clockwise. ICU because you might be six feet lower soon, inward, counterclockwise (it’s counter productive to be dead), and upward. And brush up on all your fun acronyms from private, like IMSAFE, AAVIATE, SPARROW (adds supplementals, like G1000, and placards), NWKRAFT, PAVE/PPPPP, ATOMATOFLAMES, FLAPS, CCCCC (when lost), DVMONA, 30FTDUC (reg renewal). One of my favorites is for convective sigmet, or EAT SHT. Embedded thunderstorms, a line of thunderstorms, thunderstorms with significant rain to the surface exceeding 40% of a 3K sq mile area, surface winds greater than 50KT, hail greater than 3/4 inch at the surface, and tornadoes. Valid for 2hr’s.

I am a well season spin instructor in Indy with over 3000 spins and hundreds of CFI endorsements. This is one of the BEST explanations I’ve ever seen on spins. Exceptionally well done!

Side note to all you students earning your ratings: For my instrument rating, during my check ride, I lost track of a few facts in my head, and was blanking. It pertained to attitude instrument flight, and I was just absolutely blanking on the orders and what pertained to which, etc. etc. So, I admitted this to him, and said “I’m going to talk about something that will help jog my memory.” We chatted for twenty minutes about the JFK Jr flight, and how crucial it is to the safety of flight to understand and interpret your aircraft instruments. He asked a few specific questions pertaining to the incident, and after giving my explanations, he said “excellent. That’s what I was looking for.” TL,DR: I passed my instrument oral by chatting it up with my DPE about JFK Jr’s failures as a pilot, mid oral, and it helped me pass my exam.

Excellent presentation, very true to the actual event. I like that you don’t do the viewer the disservice of presenting a mock-oral where the CFI just shakes hands with the students wang the whole duration of the evaluation. Checkrides are TOUGH and preparation/training needs to reflect that fact.

Over 50 years ago I owned a Citabria and played around a lot with spins. Sometimes with pieces of wool taped along the trailing edge. I Agee with you. My understanding is the wing that drops first produces more drag than the higher wing that is still flying sort of. Opposite rudder increases airspeed over the lower wing producing lift and reduces airspeed of the higher wing causing the plane to level out. Simple, then you pull out of the dive. My record for continuous spins is 31 starting from controlled airspace. Illegal spins at night with only your landing light on causes lot of ufo reports, only did it once.

I operate out of a class d and on departure/outbound, I always open flight following with my first call to ground, even before my taxi request. They’re a busy class d and sometimes they give you your “on request” when you’re halfway to the runup area but the controllers are great. I’ve never gotten swatted away.

Not really informative if you don’t provide correct answers after he gets it wrong… this is just a mock check ride so giving the answers after the fact would’ve been way better for the viewers and the student in the video 😮

I'm fortunate to live in the US Central time zone, which made it easier for me to come up with some mnemonic memory aids on this. "Spring Dandily Forward Six": In the Spring when we observe Dst, Zulu is 6 hours Forward/ahead of us. "Fall Slowly Back Five": In the Fall when we observe Standard time, we are 5 hours in Back of/behind Zulu.
