Ferdie's death was made worse by Casper carrying his body. Though it does work out for them. Still it is gut wrenching watching it.

I’m not going to try and make a claim that the ending of the Casper cartoon isn’t sad but had Ferdie actually lived I think it would have been just as bad if not worse than what actually happened. Had Ferdie lived, in his infancy he could depend on Casper to help him look for food instead of hunting prey that foxes normally do, but if he grew up he probably would have been afraid of Casper eventually and would have hunted small animals in order to survive which probably would have confused and upset Casper. By killing him off as a baby he would always be Casper’s friend and would be able to depend on him to find better ways to survive in the wild. Also being a baby he had no fear at all of Casper and could be with him. Had he grown up to be an adult it would have been the opposite. He would have ran away from Casper. So as sad as it is that’s really the only way Casper and Ferdie could have been friends because I feel he would fear Casper if he had grown up and would have went off to hunt away from Casper and their friendship would die.

I know I am overthinking the Casper one but I still feel it was done to teach children not to befriend wild foxes. Normally any fox in Ferdie’s situation would have ran away at Casper’s presence but Ferdie was only an innocent baby and didn’t know better. Had he been older he would have fled at first sight of Casper. But because he was so trusting he was in good hands with Casper but by befriending him it opened up the door for him to be killed. Had he avoided Casper he most likely would have stayed in his den and survived. Casper also most likely being the ghost of a small dead child didn’t know any better that although desperate for a friend in reality he should have left Ferdie alone. Had he been an adult he would have known it would end tragically for Ferdie but being a child most likely he wouldn’t have the knowledge of how foxes survive. He just merely wanted a friend and took the first thing that befriended him. This is why we are told to avoid contact with foxes. We may be nice to them but not everyone will and what happened to Ferdie probably happens every day to foxes everywhere. I also wonder if they were trying to make a statement that foxes aren’t like dogs. Yes they are cute but because they are predators we should never befriend them. I thought after seeing this cartoon as a kid a fox would immediately be my friend but know now the reality is the opposite. A fox would avoid me like the plague. Again I wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t some type of statement for children to avoid and not interact with foxes because even if they are comfortable enough with us it will only end in them approaching someone who isn’t and they will ultimately be killed.

This will always, to me, be a beyond amazing scene! Ted Wass's character here (much like Richard Mulligan's) was overwhelmingly hetero, and neither of them had any frame of reference for the gay community, yet they both had an unshakable, familial love for Crystal's character, which easily won out over their own unintentional ignorance!

I know I am probably overthinking this but I think the point of the Casper and Ferdie video as well as Ferdie's death may have been done in order to show kids not to interact with wild animals. I can imagine every kid who saw this cartoon wanting a fox as a pet but obviously in real life this would be a bad idea. We are encouraged to avoid contact with wild animals because by losing their fear of humans someone could eventually end up hurting them. Casper was desperate for a friend but should have realized befriending a wild fox would result in it being killed. Since Ferdie wasnt afraid of Casper he would end up befriending others and eventually would be destined to be killed by someone. I also wonder if the hunter was maybe a farmer who had chickens eaten by a fox and thought Ferdie did it and ended up killing him. Otherwise I just cannot see why he would go hunting at night unless his goal was to kill foxes who could be destroying livestock or property.

I am glad that the writers and producers of Soap realized the mistakes they made with the character of Jodie and changed him. He started out as a minor character who came across as creepy and was used as a punchline. But then they made him into someone who that was a man of morals and principles. One who became headstrong and stood up to others for what he thought was right. And when Carol gave Jodie Baby Wendy and took her from him later out of spite. And then how great it was when the Judge realized that Jodie is truly a loving, caring parent and saw Carol for the despicable human being she was. Jodie went from being a character that the audience hated, laughed at, and ridiculed, to one that became beloved and someone we all ended up rooting for.

Danny was an adorable himbo, and by the standards of the time he was pretty loving and open and accepting about Jodie's confession---most older brothers of the era would have tried to punch Jodie out, cut him off, stonewall or call him offensive names. I don't think people nowadays understand how radical this was.

Charlotte's Web is what really introduced me to the concept of death as a kid, and I remember the same day I watched it as a kid I learned that my neighbour's dog, whom I had grown up with, had passed away. Not to mention Charlotte has a beautiful soul that hasn't been matched by a character in quite the same way. I bawl every time I watch it, and to this day I can never bring myself to harm a spider because of her.

The writing leaves much to be desired from a modern standpoint. At the time they had no benchmark for how to write a gay character. You have to mess up to learn how to write a character correctly. The show made a bunch of mistakes with Jodie, but the coming out scene and Jodie winning custody of his child by audience demand are so pure and right. The show isn't perfect, but holy shit it had balls.

Jody wanted the sex change to please his highly secret relationship with pro quarterback Dennis Phillips who was actually played by former US Olympian Bob Seagram who was a track and field star. Dennis who was gay didn’t want the secret getting out and broke up with Jody in the hospital to marry a woman. Jody devastated after the news notices the unattended pill cart in his room (due to an emergency) and takes a mixture of pills to end his life. Fortunately for Jody his roommate an older man named Barney Gerber (Harold Ghould) delivers one of the series most powerful scenes as he talks to Jody on the power and goodness to keep on living no matter what, his heartbreaks are described as Jody just listens. Wow, such a great scene that gives me goosebumps today as I remember the heartfelt speech Barney delivers.... remember this is 1978 or so, Jody Dallas is the first openly gay regular on a TV series so it was uncharted waters for the writers as well as the viewers.... this too is a beautiful scene!
