Every time I get severe exposure calculation error, it makes me think of those calculation sheets that have clear rows and tick-boxes for common filters and row or two for random filter note. They could help to avoid miscalculations when you have a list of filters + a row of compensation values to add up. Sometimes it's just open up a couple stops but with polarizer, center ND and grad it is so easy to forget one or make a calculation error. With everything on paper it would be so much more reliable and I like the data on my notes anyway.

@@petercurno268 Thanks Peter glad you’re enjoying them. There are couple of things to try with regards to this. One is film winding, I’ve had a few rolls with light leakage due to the film not winding tightly enough. Now I tend to hold tension on the opposite wind knob as I’m winding the film on. The other is making sure the little clip is secure and tight that holds the lens cone on. Not sure if this will help.

For an introduction, channel swapping doesn't make any sense with your example. You need to show people an example with blue sky in the photo. I also recommend resetting your white balance AFTER the channel swap to get back to natural tones where the filter allows (I.e. for the 590 there are still some natural colours captured). White balancing after the swap will allow you to represent those colours accurately, while still having the effect of infrared on the foliage etc. With more advanced editing you can adjust the infared colours with or without changing the sky hue as to your preference.

For what it is worth, fine art is most certainly a an ambiguous term and in my view an image can be art regardless of whether it is fine art or not. What I teach my students, is that fine art implies two characteristics. 1: There was an image that was conceived or pre visualized as Ansel would have called it, in advance and planned and executed for a set of favorable conditions. 2: The image was intended as part of a broader concept. That broader concept could be for use in a book, for use in a set such as tryptic, or as part of a collection intended to be printed and displayed together to tell a story on a gallery wall or printed as part of a specific project such as a box set. To me, those two characteristics separate spontaneous photos, even really good ones, from art, conceived in the mind of the artist. No doubt, you will get many different answers to the fine art question but the definition I have offered has served me well and helped my students separate their good work from their artistic creations. Oh, and by the way, it does not matter if it is film or digital so long as the above characteristics were met.
@LeePengellyPhotography
@LeePengellyPhotography 24 күн бұрын
@@philipculbertson55 Thanks Phillip, very interesting to read through this and makes sense. I also think in a lot of cases artists especially photographers are wary of tagging their work as fine art. What a beautiful shot (6 stops, that I prefer but not by a large margin). I like more hint of the pole seen in 6 stops and bit more details in foreground (that is not a deal breaker). Bigger is not always better (think of Henri Cartier-Bresson with 35mm). Years back I tried digital with long exposure times to get photos of places that are never empty to look empty. I should revisit that idea with film and reciprocity. I think no technique makes it fine art or even art. It is about how you do it. I'd not call my window frames fine art (paintbrush work :) but I could call some other brush works.

Of all the images I liked the 6 stopper images the best. They seemed to me to have more detail and better contrast. As for fine art I've always thought it had more to do with the actual print than the image itself. The paper, the matting and framing for me at least is what makes it a fine art image. Of course to paraphrase Ansel Adams there is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy idea so what do I know about fine art and what makes it fine art

At 850 it’s very interesting to shoot clouds from below above some objects, it seems that they are almost on the ground. processing - your camera or raw converter does not have enough color temperature range, it does not understand what it sees at all. Try shooting raw and converting through RPP, he doesn’t use such a concept as temperature, the color will be ready right out of the box.

I've been shooting on a FS D800e for a couple years, and I've worked through the hot-spot, over exposure and live-view issues, but I still can't get a lens that's sharp across the field of view. I can get it tack sharp in the center and it falls apart about an 1/8-quarter of the from the edge. I can't find any discussions about focusing across the field at different wavelengths, but it seems logical that it's similar to hot-spots.

I would be using colour filters for the black and white. I used to use TMAX films, they have been reformulated since then. Any lens vignetting, I think, can be removed in LrC and Ps using radial masks. Ps now have presets, they comprise a selection of adjustment layers so you can probably use separate presets for each focal length. Try XP2-400. It's C41 film, so it goes in with your colour film. I think it can be rated at ISO 50 and processed as slide film, pushed two stops. Why would you not develop the film yourself? You get to choose the developer and processing regime.

I have red and orange filters now plus a warming filter for colour transparency too. The vignette problem isn’t too bad only had a few and managing to correct in post now. As for developing, yes I did process my own a while back but was getting inconsistent results plus space was an issue. But we know by removing the filter from in front of the sensor this opens up the entire spectrum. The interesting thing I wonder is beings film companies do this same kinda thing with there color layers when creating color shift films ... I wonder if someone could get really creative and get results like this from standard color film by using a combination of filters? We as consumers can not remove or change the layers of the film so I wonder if the correct types of filters would at least remove different parts of the color spectrum and give the same effect?
