I don't think GRAN TORINO is particularly good. It seems to me to give a stereotypical depiction of Korean War veterans, or at least those who live in the Rust Belt. I also think it's slightly odd that Hmong and Koreans are compared in this movie, for they look almost nothing alike.

Plenty of controversy around the depiction of minorities in the film! Can understand it as a southeast Asian, but can’t lie that it personally didn’t take away the narrative power of the film for me

Most white people couldn't possibly be white supremacists, regardless of how much power they wielded. If you think you're superior to other people, you don't hate them. You simply don't care about them - right? Why would you want to destroy something you didn't care about? And yet, they do! What the heck?! That was my discombobulated state of mind for many years. I came to suspect that I was being gaslit. I was reluctant to ever use the term "white supremacist" to describe an "ordinary" white person, seeing it as a term comparable to "drug dealer" or "gang member." Only criminals would ever be white supremacists, I thought, for the image of the skinheaded, neo-Nazi hooligan as a social menace was branded into my brain. The rest of us white people throughout history were the "good" white people. We couldn't possibly be "like THEM." It's been very painful for me to struggle to understand that there's more to racism than just hate, and that it's never ENTIRELY about skin color. I blame our educational system for this confusion of mine. Not only do our schools focus far too much on race, but they define racism in simplistic terms that leave children utterly perplexed. I feel sorry for today's kids - especially white kids - because I think they're growing up with even more cognitive dissonance about race than I did.

this film is important to me also because i am autistic and interest driven and i feel seen. i am very enthusiastic, as i am multifascinated towards the world around me, in learning what i am interested in... studying etc. can even come across more as a hobby than a discipline to some subjects. I always feel left behind by the educational system/curriculum because it is very evident i have the potential to even be the best of my class, i come with failing marks because these classes don't make me feel as excited to learn or give a damn about. The whole race thing is so horrid on my mental because I am slow, i need patience, my brain needs to understand and process and my autism also really makes me a hands-on learner and how it can be applied to real life- the simpler definition of a machine not being validated is so true but it hurts because having stuff simpler and being tested pragmatically how you understand your studies is important and helpful. Not to mention, overlooking special needs as just being seen as dramatic/needy/spoiled/etc. it birthed soulless teachers and soulless lessons. i need these educational figures to help me tap into my best self too, i really do believe i can be great for the good of all and harm of none. i would love so much to have a teacher like Rancho, i don't want to be left behind either.

For as much as I think Ocean Waves doesn't work as a studio Ghibli film, there's this feeling in which I'm probably alone, that there has been very few movies that depict the feelings of teenagers and young adults in a better way. The relationships of the characters, their growing pains, their vivid drama, their arguing and conflict, the nostalgia they feel torwards times that weren't even the best, the reminiscence of deep emotions that have left their mark, it all feels much more realistic, compeling and builds a much stronger relationship than most films I've ever seen. When the characters mature, it shows that they are not the same, they understand and look back to that bittersweet memories. And the last scene is very good too, it marks the start of a new chapter, to let the past be and look at the future with optimism. It's far from perfect, but for a film made by the b-team for a tv special, it's a much better work than expected.

There is allot more fluidity in race & culture then many realize and it's subjective depending on the democratic everyone has a different opinion on who is and isn't part of their race, culture or extended family. Race is very real even your precived race or ethnicity people have implicit bias even if it's how they prejudge you thinking " oh I know his/her type poor white trash, living in projects , upper middle class Cosby kid black , immigrants kid . This guy looks like he's been to prison , he looks gay, he looks like a misogynist or a communist , he looks like he likes trump get it? Happens to me all the time . Some whites don't concider people from Albania, Bosnia or turkey white because they are muslim & see them as culturally different Jews are not always seen or treated as white the same with Italians , Spanish , Portuguese,Greeks , Armenians , Georgians etc many Latin Americans are white tutonic, anglo or Latin/Hispanic ancestry many north Africans middle eastern and even east Indian and central Asians are white biological. White is different in North America then it is in Latin America or Australia or UK or Europe each has different view who is and isn't white

Really liked the movie and your vid too ! Watched Ocean Waves like just days ago. Yes, Certainly a departure from the usual Ghibli films but i watched it after like the magic ones of ghibli (one or two ) and Makoto Shinkai ones (4-5 , which are great btw) so this felt like a good change of genre . The music is certainly one that struck me as beautiful and very 90s (considering am in final year of hs so twas before my time) . I was kinda thinking it odd when the 'first impresions' track which was like a not-sure-about-what-to-do vibe played at the end to but with your vid i realised Taku felt a bit like that at the end too. Coming to the plot it did feel relatable about the foolish and stupid little fights and irrational feelings and impulsive decisions that is kinda hitting this last year of hs , so yeah it was a really nicee watch. People compare with other movies but I usually think about each movie as a single unit while rating it . Overall, its for the nostalgia , this one.👌

When I saw her in SuperCop in America, I was like, "Who is this woman?". I was impressed with her just as much as I was with Jackie Chan, if not more. I was a fan immediately. I started to look for her movies like I did Jackie Chan. I was so excited to see her in Tomorrow Never Dies, and was thrilled that Crouching Tiger was a hit. I thought for sure she was going to be a superstar in America. But It didn't really happen until the last 5 years when people knew who I was talking about. I couldn't be happier that people are recognizing her now, better late than never. She is one of my favorite actors of all time, not just actresses. As an actor period, men and women. She is great.

2 rather common tropes Pixar uses are 'humble pie' and 'reality check'...often achieved through a 'hero's journey'. My take-away from Monsters University was that: no matter how hard you try, sometimes your best just isn't enough.

That’s a sad but probably true fact of life. Falling short is often a temporary thing, though! For many of us, we have the privilege of time to learn from our experiences and try again in the future. Mike did end up contributing a fair bit to the city by the end of Monsters Inc, just not in the way he intended to originally!

This serves as a perfect companion piece to 2 different movies I think: THE ZONE OF INTEREST (2023) (since the two of them together show the atrocities from 2 opposing sides) and 12 YEARS A SLAVE (2013) (both of them show a musician going through hell and back again against the backdrop of a historical atrocity with both of them depicting their survival and extraordinary luck in terms of strangers helping them during unexpected times (that movie showed it from the perspective of slavery)).

Can't say I totally agree. However, I love the animation in that movie, at least the everyday objects, character animations are a much more mixed bag. The way items of everyday life are represented with such obvious care, but in such an understated way is why I think people often clip the movie to GIFs or stills, it just looks lovely without any sense of ostentation. You sold me somewhat on the music too. In terms of the narrative and themes, I can appreciate on an intellectual level, but the sad reality is that the way it plays out is a slow slog with characters I either don't care anything about, or actively dislike in a way that isn't conducive to me investing in the film.

This film overall is not very good, but I wouldn’t consider it the worst. I personally like it just a little bit, mostly because of the slice of life aspect and I find moments that are relatable. Taku is like all of us; once a teenager with lots of confusing/conflicting thoughts and emotions. I also like to think Rikako is a good woman at her core, but was experiencing a lot of hardship during the movie. Once again, very relatable. I might be a bit blinded by whatever I find appealing about this movie, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Doesn’t quite deserve the torch unlike other movies, Ghibli or Non-Ghibli.

The thing about Ocean Waves was it lacked depth unlike other Studio Ghibli movie plots, like Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke, I get that it was produced by Animators who weren't as experienced as Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, but its Animation was not bad, and had a quite retro Japanese Animation vibe.

A large part of Szpilman's survival was thanks to the kindness of others, first when his Christian friends hide him in an apartment and the female musician he befriended at the start of the film who hides him at another apartment.
