I was there for my first winchester race by invite from Ray Dillion, my brother in law was a awesome driver in NE indiana running outlaw late models and Dillon was building us a twin to Mark Chassis as Dillion named thrm after Mark. But we didn't have left side weight rules, Dillion was making something special. Early i had been to Dillons and Met Mark living next door closecto Rays D. Shop. Mark was all about weight and balence of the car. Was puttibg on alum.exhaust pjpes. Ray was busy working on our car so i helped mark with his pipes, cutting the end slant and helping him get thrm on the car. He had been drilling inch holes in places for less weight. Dillion invited me to thecrace so my brother in law and I made it there and was standing past turn 1 in the outer pits where they first come together and just past us is where they came to the bottom! What they dont show you orr say, mike got out of his car pissed and back then they wore open helmets with clear wrap around goggles and mike ran up to Marks car as window net was down and punched mark in the face and the googles cut marks left eye. You see when they was talking to mark the cut under his left eye. Everyone was so disapponted they crashed on last lap. I went up to Marks car and it was up on jack stands. Ray was there and when i asked he pointed to oil resovior in front of left rear tire was leaking oil, that got on marks left rear tire and thought why mark almost lost it laps earlier, and when he turned to go down under Mike it would get loose not normal for the car. That was ny only winchester race! Was a long race and when we got our car done earlier thst year, Dillion went to scale it he twlked me into pulling left side body loose, he added 2 more frame rails, filled outers with lead. 600 lbs. Worth. Changed pan hand bar, riggt front spring and rear coil overs with added spacers and cone bottons. Trying a differentcset up as i want you guys to go fast, he was beside himself when the car scaled 68% left side balence! Had to bend body out to go outside new frame rails. It changed my floor pan rivets holes as car was painted ready to go . Then Dillion gave me idea as aero was startibg in on the carels. And said if i shorten quarter panels down in back mount bar I could make bigger spoiler which i did! The car was untouchable and could turn under another car in middle of the corner! Broke track record by more than half second set by ny brother in law in another Dillion car we had. Was at a low banked 1/2 mile track with an old motor madecto turn as owner never turned them hard and i put a low set of gears in. It was screaming and doinf a great job, pulled some gear for feacher race and we started on right rear. Flag dropped and the Dillion car passed 11 cars in 4 laps on out side and a jealous hillbilly deliberately turned into it going into turn 3 and went onto guard rail as it begun, a traffic light there too lauched the car into the air and cleared a motor home into the pits, went end over ebd once and snapped sideways into a fast violent 6 flip and hit again and another 4 flips and landed on its wheels. I was first coning to car thonkingbtgis is super bad .brotger in law hollers look out, pts truck going 40 mph in wet dew grass locked his brakes and cant turn, about hits me and slams into the dillion car in front of cage , ny brother in law had to jump on roof to keep from gettibg crushesd! They spun car half aroubd. They got called plenty of bad names and fight insued over hillbilly that wheeled us! Once that was done i gathered parts as all thecshock pieces were gone. Body was a mess but chassis didn't look bad, gotvit home and where it cauggt guard rail it wasxtore in half where 2x3 frame kicks up from bix frame. New bars wouldnt fit. And had a twost to the lleft .got in our old car the next night and won the dash, heat race and twin 50s as trackvtried to pull one when they found out we crashes night before! Didn't work. So next week in back together straiggtibg bars to make it all fit! Car was a smooth driving car before nowcit darts all over thecplace but my brother in law managed to win 25 feacher wins with it! Was stripped and put back in the jig at Dillions and it just teatered in there! Dilliob goes when did this happen as this chassis is junk. Told him what hsppened and hexsaid its all your driver cause this car cant work! Bob Seneker tried to make one and flipped it at MIS and thats when left side rules banned any more then 60 % cars. Guy that bought it couldn't make it go aroubd the track! That was that! Seeing marks pod cast last month talking to dale jr. Rattling spribg rates on this race and whatche done it was All most what dillion told mecwas in our car. Lol. Wasnt long Dkllion and Mark parted ways after a crash in a new V6 car cost Dillion 60,000 and he quit giving mark cars! I quit in 83. Everyobe parted ways and did thibgs on there own!! Tickled to see this race as i was there on turn 1.

Wild seeing that track look so nice back then. I spent a lot of time there watching in the 90's now it's done for. Pretty sad. Thankful for the remaining tracks.

We lived a few miles North of the track in BI, and we could hear the engines when they came to turns 3 and 4. We didn't have A/C at home, so the windows were open and this always reminds me of summer when my brother and I were little kids, listening to Raceway Park after my Mom sent us to bed. When I got older, a few of us almost put a car in the field one year for hobby stock, but, we really couldn't justify trashing a perfectly good '68 Impala, which was my buddy's car, and he was thinking of donating it for the cause. It would have been fun, for sure. Good times at that track. If you had nothing else to do on a Saturday night, head over to Raceway for a few bucks, have a couple of Millers on draft, and watch some local racing.

There were a lot of drivers that people would say they did NOT like, and wanted them to lose. But I never heard anyone say that about Mark. The sign of a good man, that noone is against him.
