Some construction adhesives specify that they can be used with polystyrene foam insulation. So those are an option also.

As for your Tear Drop Trailer that is Awsome but is there a problem with it being blown around and unstable just as with conventional trailers in cross-windy conditions.

How difficult would it be to add a link-bar to the cheap Amazon one? ...if possible that seems like it could be a sensible solution.

@DEADB33F that is a great idea, I don't think it would be very difficult. It would limit some of the storage space but definitely improve the lifting process!

I'm building a mini camper to combat homelessness.... Now I'm a retired diesel/hydraulic mechanic and with a life long interest in my own construction projects but THIS scares me to death. It looks hella expensive and just complicated. I've watched it about 4 times and I still don't know what my first step would be! Please please tell me there's a simpler and cheaper way. I love your work. It's top notch as far as I can tell but let's be honest here. Most of us don't have this kind of 💰

For a mini camper you could do a jackery or goal zero power bank and not hard wire a system. You can get solar panels to set up for those too.

Late to the party too but yeah, mechanical bond is most important. There is a reason they call it closed cell foam, it doesn't absorb anything. You have to sand and poke little holes in it so the glue can get in. Built many foam structures and epoxy, not the old good epoxy that has nasty solvents but the latest gen of "Safety" epoxies (West Systems etc.) hands down the best. If you need to sand seams Your joe wood glue (TiteBond) and filled with microbeads. I've always used real fiberglass but I've also done a few canoes that use the old canvas technique, yep nothing new about it and there's a reason to move to real glass but good on ya for keeping the tradition. If you want a little bit more strength you can always use polyester cloth and polyurethane paint, like the water base Varathane.

50/50 bar top epoxy is excellent for bonding insulating foam. I cannot stress that fact enough! Seriously! It’s expensive but superior to all else for your application.

Why would you not just buy the foam glue that designed to be used with this foam. Like PM300 for example. Companies like 3M don’t make a foam that you can’t have the proper installation for.

So many reasons not to build a foam camper. It is insulation not a strucural material. All of the talk about using epoxies and fiber glass are because these provide the structure to hold the insulation.

So there was not a layer of glue on top of canvas too? A lot of videos out there layer on glue on top of the canvas before the paint...
@thelwood
@thelwood 2 ай бұрын
@JessicaHarris some do that. My process is like how the boats and planes used to be done. I have never tried the glue over canvas technique so I can't directly compare them. However, without the layer of glue, the paint is able to absorb deep into the canvas. It is very strong! With the glue on top, my concern is that the paint could chip over time since it is sitting on top and not deep into the fibers. But i haven't tried it that way, so I can't be certain. I do know that I have a 9 year old trailer in perfect shape using this technique .

Hopefully you still monitor these comments. Is there any tricks or issues with cutting in more windows later on after the pmf has been done? I have to build my trailer outside so I am trying to weather proof it right now. As winters coming.
@thelwood
@thelwood 2 ай бұрын
@ashleyderrickkish5004 that is a really good question. I have never cut it after the fact. If I had to, I would probably cut through the PMF with a utility knife first. I just wouldn't want any stringy fibers to get caught in a spinning blade and pull off some of the cloth.

Good video about gluing foam. This is useful for me. Most of us are not willing to go through that much work, even if we need to know. As you know, there are many ways to skin a cat. You can glue foam with hot glues that normally melt foam by priming foam with latex paint, the paint will keep the foam from melting. Depending on the heat of the glue, you need up to 5 coats of latex on the bare foam. This works perfect when using fiberglass resin to glue foam or for fiber glassing large surfaces of foam because the wet fiberglass melts unprimed with latex foam.
