This video is a collaboration that I did with Tom from "The Tiny Side of Tiny". He wanted a teardrop trailer to pull with his Vespa!! We ended up building this out of foam (foamie), aluminum and canvas (Poor mans fiberglass)! There will be additional build videos coming, but please enjoy this tour!

Hi Lucy, it's been over a year now since I first saw this video and I'm getting ready to build a teardrop with what I've learned from you and others. My teardrop will be for my e-bike and as light as I can get it. I plan on traveling to my favorite spots and hopefully if all works out I'll be taking a trip to Nova Scotia with it. Thanks a bunch for all that you do on your channel!

I had a Vespa just like that when I was 13 years old. I bought it for $5 from an friend who got it out of the garbage dump. He couldnt get it to run. I realized the spark was to yellow. Not hot enough. I figured out it was missing an ignition coil. I found an ignition coil from a motorcycle. I got it to run... My dad and friend couldnt believe I got it to run. At the time the shifting lever inside was also broken. I took a piece of metal and a grinder and built a shifting lever. It didnt have shifting cables either to the handle bar. I found some from a bicycle. My dad and friend was quite impressed. I had a lot of fun with that thing.

I have made panels from foam and fiberglass and they are usually stronger and take quite an impact so this was a great video I worked in a research and development department for an automobile manufacturing company and we made entire plugs to be molded from out of foam and found strength wise it was better than aluminum sheet and of course the insulator factor and the light weight I appreciate this video because it shows people in the public there are more options out there to build from. Thanks again.

I got a idea,could it be possible to build a small truck camper out of foam?
@Mike-hr6jz
@Mike-hr6jz Жыл бұрын
@@jackbishop5992 yes it can, one of my friends did something similar using foam sheets , that you get from the hardware store big box .then spray foam in the corner and with a angle grinder and 60 grit paper to quickly form rounded shape than i’ll aluminum tape to get a smooth surface to pull off of using your release agent or you can use believe it or not Pam spray for cooking .woven matt first layer dry and use roller and brushes to get air out . then whin dry sandpaper scuff with 40 or 80 grit sandpaper and apply as many codes after that the inside will be slick you reinforce the outside with two by fours or cardboard or whatever flip it over .after you pull it off put release agent on The mold you just created and spray slick sand polyester primer first apply Thick say 2 to 3 layers or coats ,then win sticky but not sticking to your fingers .apply fiberglass first coat ,is the most important to get the air out of again you can let that dry scuff it apply more possibly 3 to 4 coats this will be strong enough when you pull this out of the mold .you will have an almost finished part you still will have to sand the rough spots fill some body filler in the low and air holes sand this and spray more slick sand. then you can do a regular paint to finish over this sounds like a lot of work but it’s not really that complicated .and you can make several of these parts out of the one mold you can just lay the fiberglass over the foam and finish the outside but this is not going to be nearly as straight and flat where it needs to be . If I did not mention the phone board has aluminum on one side and just Styrofoam on the other Styrofoam if you apply polyester resin directly to it it will melt you have to have the aluminum or painted with latex paint one coat to dry completely then apply a secondLet that dry and you should be able to lay fiberglass on the phone directly.

Seing that coffee coloured camper in the background it now becomes clear why the quality of this build was so outstanding! I remember being seriously impressed with the coffee camper, it was exquisite in every detail. As the constructor is also responsible for the beautiful, tiny Vespa travel cabin, it follows that it would be exquisite too!

There's a guy on the channel "Little House Off Grid" who built a truck camper out of 2x2's for framing and covered it in coroplast sheets. I’m about a third of the way done with my 6x10 vardo style foamie for my car. However, I just picked up a nice Honda Silverwing 600cc maxi scooter, and found a trailer hitch for it relatively cheap. Hey, Lucy. I just found this channel and I'm really impressed with your knowledge about "pmfg". I'm considering using it for my own camper build but I, also, want to build a 10' sailing dinghy to go with it. The usual method is marine plywood, epoxy, and fiberglass cloth( stitch and glue). You did say you were always looking for new projects and I am curious as to how a boat would hold up using the aforementioned "pmfg". Pretty please with sugar on top?
@thelwood
@thelwood 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for watching! So historically boats were made with PMF, many of them it is was the boat deck that was made with it. I have thought about trying to make a foam paddleboard and coating it with PMF. I think it would do well for any boat that was pulled out of the water everyday and allowed to dry out. I am not sure if I would trust the seems completely for a boat that soaked a lot. I would opt for marine epoxy probably. Just to make sure the hard work of build is super protected!

You should add disc brakes to the trailer & use them instead of the Vespa brakes to keep the trailer from coming around on you. Get 2 matching small motorcycle front rims with calipers. Mount the master on the Vespa & use a long rubber brake hose before a hardline split to feed each caliper. Probably only add 20lbs to your rig.

Cool build, and something to be proud of! Now comes the real challenge, a micro RV for towing behind a bicycle, tear drop are cool, but this may need to look more like a vintage “Shasta trailer” because it will be for myself and one small dog ( Golden Doodle) one full side slide out, and a usable kitchen would be nice! I am after plans and information, because would be building this myself. Registration is not required for bicycle trailers in NJ. I also believe we need to challenge our youth, so having this as a “pre teen “ design, build and use” challenge will achieve a few things, first it will engage their imagination on design, how to build, and ability to use! And can also give people like us the ability to mentor future creators! Are you up for the challenge of design,build , and use? The great outdoors are waiting!😂😅😂😅

Ok, this is how you build a camper. I'm currently designing a long range bicycle camper for selling purposes and this has given me a lot of inspiration. First off, pmfg, guess that's something i'm going to have to learn to use, especially if I intend to keep it below 120 lbs. Second, I like the amount of space and the back area for cooking. Genius. How well does the foam work? I'm thinking of doing my trailer from aluminum with foam style roof similar to the structure of an ultralight, but I may end up using this method alongside.
@thelwood
@thelwood 2 жыл бұрын
Very cool! The foam works really well, if you can find 1.5 or 2 inch foam for the walls that would be even better! But using pmf on the inside and outside of the walls provided a lot of rigidity!

Thank you! Yes, here in Arizona it is actually very easy to license a homemade trailer. You just have to take it to the DVM and pay a fee for an "inspection"... which basically means they measure it and put a VIN on it. It is probably much harder in other states. Our laws are pretty lacks...

@@thelwood My question exactly and your answer couldn't be more useful to me. I just move to Arizona! I stumbled upon your channel a few minutes ago. I will now go on a binge, then draw up some plans. It would be so fun to build something like this!

How do you attach the roof vent ? Do you just screw into the foam or do you put boards underneath the foam ? Also how do you attach the foam to the trailer ?

Just a guess - the light weight of the trailer is the only hope you have of stopping quickly with those brakes. Wear boots with thick soles, just in case.
@thelwood

It actually stops really well, but the light weight does make wind gust challenging.

Awesome video. Very well presented and great information. I've been working with PMF off and on for a couple of years but I've learned SO MUCH from your channel. My question concerning this build is cross winds. With the super light weight of the camper and scooter, does this present any issues? Thanks and Keep the great vids coming.

Thank you! And you are absolutely right, wind is the most challenging issue. I said "I think we are building a sail" several times. Tom is an experienced driver and he is very aware of the weather prior to heading out.

That storage area DOES have a nice "Mid-Century Modern" aesthetic. It would fit in perfectly in 1950s Los Angeles ... especially the "I Love Lucy" episode where Ricky went to Hollywood.

Thank you so much! If you contact Tom on his page he can give you the details. The trailer frame is the one step I was not involved with. He and his friend welded it out of aluminum. I have pacemaker so welding is the one thing I am not allowed to do. Thanks for watching!

How did you get the trailer licensed? I think one of the things is the tires have to be up to a certain road standards. If it's gonna be powered , otherwise you can get away with bicycle wheels if it's being powered by a bicycle

how much do you reckon it weighs without the trailer? I want to build a camper to pull behind a large 1300cc motorbike. the problem is due to uk law trailer has to be 3ft wide but a load can be any width so i will need to build the camper so its removable this creates issues as i want a backup battery in the trailer and a diesel heater as well. im not sure if i can build a steel trailer if this is light enough or a aluminium one to save weight. do you sell plans of the build as making the top hatch and door waterproof sounds tricky. I bet the foam mus work well for cold weather and fans will probably help for hot i will just do a drop tube that goes close to the ground as the inlet and a top vent sunroof etc as the outlet

I would go with 1.5" or 2" foam to make is sturdier. That would give you larger surface areas at the joints.

Was here 7 months ago came back to looks at this fantastic little tear drop. Me and my husband recently got a Harley we plan on doing a cross country trip with no time limits. We looked at some motorcycle camper hated them most are a tiny trailer with a tent in top and thaf not what I want plus they are way to expensive. Then I thought of this very cool tear drop camper I would do a few changes for what we need but this is prefect for us... So I have a few questions. What is the total weight? What was the material cost? And what glue did you use? And the material use to put on the foam for the poor man's fiber glass? This is by far the best foamy camper I've ever seen. Its very nicely done you have mega talent I think you could make these and sell them with no problem. It's fabulous

Thank you! It is 170lbs. I used foam fusion for any foam to foam or foam to wood parts. I used titebond2 for applying the canvas for the PMF. I am not certain of the total cost. The biggest expense would be the aluminum trailer and Tom had a friend who welded it for him.

Lucy, how is the canvas holding up on your TD. Do you cover it in the winter.
@thelwood
@thelwood Жыл бұрын
The canvas is holding up great! I have made 3 trailers with it. My personal teardrop is 7 yrs old. It has a cover on it and is under a lean to. My cargo trailer is about 4 yrs old and is fully exposed to the elements and is also holding up great. With that being said, sun and heat are our big issues here in Arizona. None of them have ever sat out in snow.

Tom's friends welded that. My involvement started right after the trailer was made. I know Tom shot some footage of that process, but he hasn't posted a video on his channel. I have a pacemaker so I am not allowed to weld and stayed far away that day :)

@thelwood
@thelwood 7 ай бұрын
I drilled 1 in wide, 3/8" deep holes with a forsner bit, then used foam fusion in the holes and inserted the dowels. Then I applied clamps (with light pressure) and boards under the clamps to distribute the pressure and reduce denting the foam.
