To practice what Seneca is preaching is impossible. Period. And while excessive anger is CERTAINLY a detriment, a wee bit is useful. It let's ya know when something may be wrong even when your intellect might be telling you it's ok. Your intellect isn't always correct. It's absolutely impossible for a normal person not to get angry from time to time. And I will go as far to say that if you don't, maybe there is something wrong with YOU. Seneca also had no knowledge of adrenalin. Eloquent people such as Seneca have the ability to sound correct when they aren't.

Epicureanism is probably not sustainable if everyone tries to practice it. We'll run out of people. But I don't think it's the one philosophy for everyone. It's a philosophy that works well for some. Or, perhpas it can apply to everyone because he does make exceptions to his examples. There may be many individual cases where it's just too painful to not have sex and not bear children, or get involved in politics. It may vary from person to person what is required to minimize pain. I personally concur with his assessment that sex brings pleasure but lack of sex brings no pain. Others I have talked to have related to me that for them, there is a lot of anxiety and distress from not having sex. The same seems to be true for holding status in society. Some seem to desperately need it. Others seem content without it. It may be possible to learn contentment without it. Or maybe it's something intrinsic for some poeple and cannot be learned different. Like sexual preference, there may be no way to change it through practice or training.

These letters are meant to be interactive -- Once you read or listen to the Letters, you'll get a lot more out of them via discussions & feedback. They also require repetition. You will learn more after you go back and re-read them -- EXTREMELY VALUABLE to make this a part of your daily life!

The most terrifying thing about going to the bottom of the ocean is not knowing what is there in the dark. Once there, on the ocean floor, it becomes clear there's very little at the bottom to harm us. We are far more likely to be harmed on waters surface or on the land itself. Much like a trip that far down, returning from these depths requires a slow and methodical ascent, if otherwise death and pain are most assuredly waiting when the submarine door opens. I have been down there before. I have come up unharmed before. Life has given me my ticket for another involuntary trip down there. I've no reason to believe harm will befall me when I've returned unscathed and so many others do each day.

I think what makes Seneca unique among the ancient stoics was that he wasn't against criticising some widely held beliefs among his school of thought. Here we basically see him roast Zeno's view on death more than once, the founder of stoicism. It would be as if Paul the apostle said "yeah this thing Jesus said was pretty silly lol" in the Bible.

Stoicism.. is profoundly poor... a con job.. that led to the destruction of many nations.. with the "stoic era" and a revolt called "the Baroque era" which is still effecting us to this day.... Aristotle had it right the first time... and Jesus... was on point and then some.... be very careful with your passion, your desire, your insecurity and neediness... look at these topics with a tempered and true mind... I'll gladly let you all in on something very old.... .Socratese and plato were not literal genius.. but Aristotle was.. and even he sold out in the politics.... Plato was a front man for Aristotle to be able to speak without being killed, which he was almost killed on a number of occasions prior to becoming the teacher of Alexander. This is NEED TO KNOW INFORMATION.... Aristotle's Ethics (virtue Ethics) were a profoundly potent natural defense mechanism given to the people 300 years before Christ, Jesus's message was 100% in line with Virtue Ethics, and Stoicism was used to try and remove the power of virtue ethics from the people, without fingering the perpetrators as Anti Christ or Anti Virtue...... you need to know... the word Prude as you use it is false.... .. Aristotle plainly stated that it is impossible to be virtuous much less prudent if you are ruled by your desire for the wage of false righteous indignation... .. and false righteous indignation is what you associate with the word Prude... thus it is impossible to be Prudent ... or a Prude... if you are false righteously indignant toward the petty moral poverties of your neighbors... ie... if you judge others pettily... please beware..... the topic of Do not Judge... is actually much larger still.... and Christ's reason for saying do not judge ... was to prevent corrupt leaders from getting away with theft and murder by setting the people to judge each other with false righteous indignation and then take the blame for all the damage done by said corrupt leaders theft....... Socratese, Plato, Marcus Aurelius and similar all had some cool points to make... some cool sayings... they were all very intelligent... but none of them held even the smallest candle to Aristotle or Jesus.... nor did the other giants of ancient history.. there is a lot to look at... very very carefullly..... find me on FB Dawn's Erogeny.. help me look after everyone.... it is your natural birth right and obligation.
