I bought an old Atari Mega ST off Ebay, it had a PC-Speed (AMD but with an Intel logo on the chip!) 286 add on board soldered on top of the Motorola 68000. I used an add on adapter that gives an ISA bus to install an ET4000 VGA card. I Owned a PC repair shop in the 90's and have a large collection of old hardware to mess with.

Quite refreshing to see the old machine being rebuilt in modern form. I resorted to running freedos on Linux to run my old DOS games. I know it is not the same, but at least something ;-)

Kinda neat, and you have the interrupts working (well enough) to get sound. Very neat. I'm curious if this is something that's only able to be used on certain chipsets, and you can't do this forever on every system going forward.
@TheRasteri7 күн бұрын
It only works up to intel series 9 chipsets (X99 I guess being the last). Series 100 chipsets and later don't work. I haven't been able to get any AMD chipsets to work either.

Why not have a video recording included alongside the macro files for each system? You can reduce the quality of course to black and white for size (it would still be big, but work on every system with indeterministic pauses) You can sync it directly to the commands so at any point it could check frames in proximity to sync the command it's expecting if it detects that the frames don't match. Playing it blindly gives you nothing to "verify" the success of the messages sent.

Brilliant. I know your pain. I had a very similar project hooking up a TEEMI bar code scanner as a HID device. Indeed found CH559 and Atmega32U4 in serial to do the job. Only to find that I have to reverse engineer all of the data this bar code scanner is outputting. It's a complete blackbox, no source code anywhere. So I just have an oscilloscope to figure it all out. Half way through the project I noticed Web Serial API is now a thing in select browsers and thought... this sort of defeats the purpose of me building this entirely and went with the software approach. Great video!

Interesting video on how possibly bring back old ISA. However I'm afraid the ISA PnP driver after WinXP is a NULL driver that is for some compatibility, but does NOT work - I tested SB AWE64 Gold ISA PnP card on Athlon XP platform with ISA slot: the ISA soundcard worked perfectly with Windows XP, but Vista and Win 7 did not even detect it resulting in no sound! There was no prompt for drivers, nothing in device manager. Win7 32 bit is latest which worked since Win8 and Win10 32 bit required SSE2 that resulted in BSOD during setup.
@TheRasteri13 күн бұрын
Yeah, taking a look at isapnp.sys in ghidra, it does look very much like a null driver to me... XP's isapnp.sys actually reads ports and stuff.

I recently (re)acquired a PC1640! A question on the MDMONO mode. From the docs, it looks like this should allow emulation of EGA graphics modes on a MDA monitor. However I tried this and EGA modes do not work - only Hercules modes do. I know there are some graphics cards that do this successfully (notably the ATi EGA Wonder cards). Have you had any luck with the MDMONO mode? Thanks!
@TheRasteri21 күн бұрын
Actually I've never tried to use the EGA emulation stuff... The graphics chip (PEGA1A/G3101) is used in a few other cards (notably Paradise AutoSwitch EGA), maybe consulting the manuals for those would shed some light?
@jamesfmackenzie20 күн бұрын
@@TheRasteri thanks! It looks like the AutoSwitch EGA absolutely does what we need - but I've had no luck with the PC1640 yet. Will keep at it.
@jamesfmackenzie12 күн бұрын
After consulting the manuals on this. Both the AutoSwitch EGA and PC1640 support EGA monochrome mode (0Fh) on an MDA monitor. So far as I can tell, almost no software supports this mode - so not much fun to be had 😂 Seems like the EGA Wonder is unique in also supporting EGA colour modes (0Dh, 0Eh, 10h) on MDA. Need to get one of those!

hey clinton, i need one too! lol great video as always! i want to design a combination pci card for the 5150, with a raspberry pi or similar at the core, to as as a gpu, sound card, ide/sata, and ethernet all in one card. myself and a couple friends are trying to acquire the hardware needed to begin making it. if this already exists, or someone has any tips, we are all ears! and looking for old hardware cheap, broken isnt a problem, we can fix

First 2 use cases I thought of are edge cases: 1. Use USB Keyboard to DA15 for Family Basic on NES (with exp board) or Famicom 2. Use USB keyboard with TempleOS on bare-metal without modifying the OS code I was wondering when someone would put time into making USB polling accurately translate to serial interrupts =) looks like a great solution.

Back in those days when PCI slots entered the scene, I mostly used the ISA slots for the modem. The reason is that ISA modems had more hardware to do most of the processing on the ISA card for the modem work because of ISA's limited bandwidth. Meanwhile for PCI modem cards, PCI modems were cheaper than ISA because they had far less hardware, relying on the CPU to do the computational work before sending data to the card. The drivers for the ISA modems were less taxing on the CPU, granting better system performance.

Maybe the bridge initialization code can be integrated into BIOS as an DXE module, and that would solve windows driver issue.
