I enjoyed the walk through your garden. I love zinnias, too! Do you get powdery mildew on yours? I'm in New England, too, and have noticed some on mine.

How lovely to have so much land to grow things , to walk on , to breathe in the fresh air in open space. Wonderful.

we are blessed. But it wasn't always this way... we used to live on .19 acres (as in less than 20% of 1 acre) in a very congested area, on the odd-shaped tip of a cul-de-sac. But honestly we loved life there too... it was just a very different season

Thank you! I never would’ve thought there was specific things you can do to keep fungus from killing your plants. I’m going to have to try that with next year’s garden.
@MichelleVisserКүн бұрын
for sure! you have to be diligent but it definitely keeps fungus at bay, or at least from taking over. Let me know your results next year!

My mom had a rule at the table that we had to take at least 3 bites of everything served. She often softened the edge of that rule by making a large amount of mashed potatoes (which we loved) with meals where she served things we abhored. She encouraged us to eat each bite with some potatoes. It worked well. I learned to enjoy green vegetables after eating them with potatoes over my early years.

Does this not grow wild in NH?
@MichelleVisser4 күн бұрын
it does, but the roots tend to be tiny when you forage for it in the wild. When I grow them in my garden I have more control

Growing up, we would get our lard in 5 gallon tins and we just kept it in our unheTed basemen I was reminded when you were talking about picky eaters and you mixing homemade and store bought ketchup My partner used to be very picky and Brussel sprouts are my favorite and I would say he had to eat 5 halves and he would. The lemon butter I put on them helped.

Ruthann you made me think of making pasta. We had sheets laying on the bed and floor to dry. We made pot pie and wide noodles. But when I say I'm making pot pie. People think I'm making those things that come out of a box. But I'm making a pot of chicken broth. Have it come to a boil add the pot pie noodles, chicken, onions in layers. Stir so pasta doesn't stick. Cook till noodles are cooked. You are really making me hungry. Born and raised in York, Pa till I married and my husband went into the service.

Especially now in my 70's with many past permanent injuries, there are many things I truly cannot do. When knees just won't cooperate the will just can't overcome them. Since I'm sole care keeper, I can't even consider surgery. Therefore, I trust my Lord and Savior. I did do lots of hard things when younger though. Good tip.

I have dehydrated a lot of things over the years, but I am still struggling with RECIPES for using the dehydrated veggies etc. I bought a cookbook for said foods, and tried the potatoes au gratin etc. The recipes were less than palatable 😢

My change was a lot of yrs ago. My husband used to bread and fry everything. Very little now is breaded, and the oil is a bit healthier when used, and switched from margarine to butter. When we finally find our forever home, I'll be gardening and trying to find farmers to get raw milk and sides of grass fed, beef and pork. 😊❤

I'm in Iowa. We had 1 child who was gluten sensitive so i had to revamp my cooking habits pretty early on...which was good but hard then. I learned to can things as a very young mama and started gardening pretty early in, too. Grateful to have been in places i could do those things and for my mom who had a garden so I was at least interested to try! From there I got chickens, then started baking bread...its fun to look back because soemtimes I feel like Im not doing enough! I've done a lot! And now I'm learning how to grow my own herbs and make my own herbal tea blends. Always trying to find ways to clean up our diet even now when our kids are all grown! 😊 I'd love having a homestead, a cow or two, etc...but know that won't happen for me but enjoy doing what I can! Oh! I tapped our trees in our yard one year, too! That was fun! Black walnut syrup is Ah-mazing!!
@MichelleVisser9 күн бұрын
Yes, I hear black walnut syrup is delicious! And yes, I'm always not thinking I do much but looking back over the years is always eye-opening. And very cool that you're going to grow a tea garden. I love it!
