Jack is back! Fastfetch's config.jsonc file is outstanding for personalization. People have a messload of examples online. Almost a year ago, I moved to Arch-based CachyOS and Hyprland WM with Budgie as an alternate floating window manager. (Thanks to the Keifer CachyOS review...) It's been almost a year without issues. My Plasma experience was GREAT until Plasma 6 crashed my favorite widgets and Tumbleweed.

Well, I've been using an Arch based distribution (Arcolinux) for several years now, but something broke recently with it and other Arch based distributions that I tried : first, lots of problems with Plasma 6 that didn't exist before (Windows rules broken, Gestures disappeared, can't manage audio notifications, and so on) ; then Plasma keeps crashing (black screen, need to type some commands to restart services). So, I went to MXLinux, a distribution that is still using Plasma 5. And, yeaaaaaaah, I can apply my old windows rules, I get use my mouse gestures everywhere, no crash anymore, I can play old MS Windows startup/shutdown sounds 🙂

I have been a loyal Kubuntu user now for many years. I've tried quite a number of desktops and distros over the years, but have always come back, because: 1. It looks nice. Gtk desktops and apps look pretty ugly and outdated compared to Qt software (in my opinion). 2. It just works out of the box. Being an animal of habit, I don't want to spend time configuring and tweaking too much. I always jumped from version to version just by using the upgrade tool, without doing fresh installations. Always worked fine. 3. Despite all common whining about "bloat", I cannot second this. Unlike Gnome, it always ran smoothly and snappy, even on my 17 years old laptop. This changed for me with 24.10 (on my more modern and quite powerful desktop computer): * The distro upgrade didn't work - for the first time ever. I had to do a full installation in order to get the newest version. * When I started the installation, there was no way to easily adjust the partitions. I had to set everything manually. Not a too big challenge for me, but for a new user this would have probably an impassable hurdle. So far, just minor annoyances, but: I am having problems with the software centre (Discover): Most of the time, it simply doesn't start, i.e. it crashes every time, I start it. Of course, I went through the logs, tried every possible (and reasonable) fix, I found on the net and in the Kubuntu forum. alas, to no avail. Sure. I can still install and update apps and system from the command line, but this is not what I expect from a KDE system. If I can't fix this issue, I'm probably going to leave Kubuntu after >15 years. Not even trying to upgrade on the laptop (still got 3 months left on the last LTS version). To you Jack, merry Christmas!

Nice to see a new video from you! Hope you have a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year 🙂👍 Around 01:30 yesterday Saturday 21 Dec, Solus received the XFCE 4.20 stable update! Could you install the second Solus XFCE Beta, Solus v4.6 from 14 Oct 2024, review the original XFCE 4.18 version, then install all updates to end up on XFCE 4.20, and do the review again, comparing memory usage, startup speed etc? You could even try Solus KDE Plasma. Some people say it's very fast and stable, that's what Solus is known for! Thanks, take care! (Posted on Sun 22 Dec 2024 at 04:10 UTC)

I always want to like KDE, and it's great for a month or so after installing but always seems to break eventually, even with minimal "ricing." Maybe it's something with my hardware, but I've got all AMD on my PC and all Intel on two Thinkpads. GNOME just seems way more stable even if I get tired of looking at it after awhile.

*Hey Jack, do you know how to configure the proxy settings using the FPHTTPClient? Is that even possible? If so, do you have any examples?*
@jackkeiferАй бұрын
Hi Aaron, I haven't used it personally, but the proxy property would be used something like this after creating the HttpClient: HTTPClient.Proxy.Host := 'proxy.example.com'; // Set your proxy address HTTPClient.Proxy.Port := 8080; // Set your proxy port The Proxy object also has username & password properties in case you need authentication. Hope this helps. 👍
@aaroncatolico7550Ай бұрын
@@jackkeifer *Where did you get this information about proxy settings for the FPHTTPClient? The reason that I ask is because I have not been able to find any good documentation on how to implement proxies with this library. I'd like to see documentation on the exact syntax for using private proxies with user authentication (username & password). Thanks again, Jack.*
@jackkeiferАй бұрын
Hi Aaron, I found the Proxy property from the httpClient example file within the Lazarus folder. On my PC it's path is: Lazarus/fpcsrc/packages/fcl-web/examples/httpclient/httpget.pas Around line 103 you can see the Proxy property example for the TFPHTTPClient. When I'm more stuck, I may refer to StackOverflow via Google search. Recently, I've also tested ChatGPT with some Free Pascal queries and I'm getting surprisingly good results. Sometimes I have to banter, and make some corrections a little, but it's a real time saver! I always share my corrections with chatGPT to help it learn and (hopefully) deliver more accurate results in the future for other users.
@aaroncatolico7550Ай бұрын
@@jackkeifer *Great idea! I love AI & chatGPT has helped a ton! However, last I was still not having any success using the FPHTTPClient & private proxies that require username & password authentication. I haven't even been able to crawl a basic google search in the Indy library or FPHTTPClient using any private proxies. I'm still going through some testing phases. Anyhow, I appreciate your support. I'll do additional testing with the FPHTTPClient once again to see if I can make any connections. Let me know if you get around to it as well. The cool thing about proxies is the capability to change/mask your IP address while crawling websites. It also prevents you from being blocked by any of the sites that you're crawling. Not sure if you have already experimented with proxies.*
@jackkeiferАй бұрын
@@aaroncatolico7550 Hi Aaron, thanks, I haven't done much with proxies but I suspect the intention of the Proxy property is to address an internal proxy server on the same network. This is only speculation, but if the Port itself isn't working via a web proxy, my next approach might be to assign the web-server port to the Port property. So for example, if you're trying to use a proxy at an http address, try calling port 80. An https address, port 443 typically. So the request URL would include the port of the proxy, such as httpClient.Proxy.Host:=' myProxy.net:5000'; Then httpClient.Proxy.Port := 443; If the port is not the issue, but instead it's authentication you're struggling with then for username / password handling, maybe consider the DoPassword() function and how it's called in the httpget example. This should get you pointed in the right direction. Again, I'm just throwing stuff out there but maybe it will inspire something. 👍👍

*Is this TyphoonCode better than Lazarus or have you since switched back to Lazarus?*
@jackkeifer3 ай бұрын
Hi Aaron, I'm currently using Lazarus (installed via FpcUpDeluxe). Between CodeTyphon & Lazarus it's really a toss-up for me. After reinstalling Linux one day, I just added in Lazarus simply because it seems a little lighter overall, and I don't need all the extra widgets available in CodeTyphon. With that said, I haven't looked at it in quite awhile. I may need to take another look. 👍
