It's just a matter of perception. xD I'm a big fan of fantasy races and the most commonly used elves usually live in average 750 years. Their society seem awkward to outsider because they do not have the adventuring or explorative spirit of other races. Which tags them has extremely closed on themselves. The reason is quite complex but i will try to explain their way of thought and why they are hard to role play. From their birth to about what we has humans call a ''100 years old'' they are still children in their society and carry a child name. Once they hit 100 they are put through some kind of test which depends on the custom of their homeland and then earn their adult name. They usually start showing trait of old age around 600 years old. Now the reason most races feel elves regard them has lesser stem from the elves being aware of the short span of other races lives when pit against their own. Specially those who have outlived friends from other species. Elves are aware that at mid age if they die they lose a lot more than a middle age human for example. So they regard those lives has less valuable in time of danger. Are they right or wrong? I cannot say. But when i put myself in their shoes i can understand their point. Let me clarify. If we compare a human being whose average life span is about 82.2 years old to an elf who has stated above has an average of 750 years to live. It's easy to understand why they value their lives more than a human one. Human becomes adult around 21 years old. If you multiply that by 4 you are probably dead or so old you barely can do anything worthwhile. Elf ,on the other hand, become adult around a 100 years old. If you multiply that by 7 they will be old but still alive and will still have about has much life to live has an adult human. That's mostly why they live detached from other races. They just outlive everything. It's a blessing and a curse. It's hard to put your life at risk to adventure, explore and discover new hidden wonders when you have that much life to lose. So if an elf chose to put his/her life at risk to save your human one. You can be sure they value you more than any other living being could ever. Because to them life is the most precious gift to preserve. That's also why they are often linked to nature. They actually live long enough to see it grow in their life span.
