Thank you Nick. This is such a very important presentation from Paul. It covers much of the scope of what's urgently needed in UK politics that is currently unavailable through Westminster. As Paul says 'assemblies are a very good way to sidestep intractible political problems'. Personally, I'd replace political representatives of the current system by assemblies from community scale through to city, regional and national scale. It would knit together our communites across internal boundaries, enable specialised topic assemblies to deal with key issues, and assist greatly with getting the money out of what has become, more than ever, a corporate political system. Trusting the people is the right way to go.

Let's build a global platform for digital democracy so citizens assemblies can vote on principles and policies instead of personalities and political parties.

@karlschwartz79339 күн бұрын
I nearly tuned out because of the background noise, but glad I did not. John D. Liu speaks eloquently; and lives from what I think of as a cosmic / whole earth perspective. Regrettably what makes civilization "great" in our own eyes will destroy us in the end. Victims of our own technologies, distracted by the toys we make and buy, we are largely blind to the harm we are doing to a once-diverse, healthy and exceedingly rare biosphere, which we and all life forms depend on.

Tx for highlighting the interconnected nature of the ecological & climate crises - they are not separate issues. The climate crisis began and is closely linked to the ecological crisis. Not only is humankind adding a lot more GHGs into the atmosphere, we are also reducing nature's ability to absorb GHGs by (a) damaging AND (b) destroying natural ecological systems that remove GHGs for the atmosphere thereby impairing drawdown, most notably the ocean(s), mangrove & kelp forests, tropical rainforests, peatlands & soils. Some ecosystems degrade to the point that they become carbon sources rather than carbon sinks (e.g. permafrost, wetlands, the Amazon rainforest etc). Western philosophy views nature only as a resource for profit. Nature that does not produce profit is useless. I liken most western countries to the Frengi of the tv series Star Trek - profit at all cost (literally!). The climate crisis cannot be solved unless we start altering our attitudes towards nature. ALL human systems exist WITHIN the ecological system, NOT the other way around, i.e. human systems are WHOLLY dependent on ecological systems. It should also be remembered that ALL human systems developed during a period of climate stability and are not designed to operate anywhere outside that. Nature, in it's undamaged form, produces an abundance on which ALL life depends - it's the goose that lays the golden eggs. Humankind is abusing that goose to the point that those golden eggs will no longer be produced, and then we're in really serious trouble!. The problem is we don't really know when that point is, and the real danger is whether golden egg laying will be permanently lost at that point. A factory machine can only withstand a limited amount of abuse & neglect before it stops working, perhaps permanently... and then it's game over for everyone.

Agriculture would become almost unviable in Europe should the AMOC cease, but as the slowdown continued what we might witness (if we're lucky) is a return to a diet heavy with the crops grown by early Scandinavians: wheat, barley, rye, cabbage, beans and onions. Crops which have been conditioned to cope in cold climates, with long winter and short summers, would become staples. It came as something of a (little) surprise to hear that some of the fringe elements of the online prepper communities are talking a lot more nowadays about "the crops grown by Viking farmers."

According to Berkely earth global average land temperatures for 2024 averaged 2.28 degrees C above the 1850-1900 average. Add another .2-.3 for 1750 to 1850-1900 and you have global average land temperatures 2.5 C above preindustrial.

If??? More of when and how quickly is it collapsing? Jim Masa is especially clear on this issue. NTHE is a math problem. How do we get the stored heat out of the oceans? Can not be done no matter what we do to the atmosphere. Built in heating not fixable by anything just rolling along oblivious to the small temperature range necessary for civilization to survive.

This is devastating news that will only have catastrophic consequences when this system finally stops after a continuous slowdown over decades. Sadly and unfortunately ceasing CO2 emissions now is frankly far too late. This is the product of a rapacious dysfunctional 'wealth and economic' ideology that transformed from feudalism into capitalism/socialism(note both are growth oriented nature exploitative ideologies that simply perceive nature as resources to exploit for transforming true real unowned capital into owned virtual capital) and is set to transform back into feudalism in the form of techno-feudalism. This will be a form of feudalism and economy that will be both energy and material intense that will simply accelerate and magnify the entropy generating processes currently being used. This will be due to the common belief that numbers in accounting tools are regarded as more important than nature and are regarded as a better indicator of reality than what we actually see and sense in reality. The tools of wealth management i.e. accounting and economics tools, are frankly completely dysfunctional and should be simply thrown out and redesigned along the principles of how Nature flourishes and grows and also in harmony with the principles of thermodynamics. Such natural processes definitely generate entropy but this is balanced always by the generation of negative entropy i.e. the synthesis of life, creating new living cells to maintain biodiversity, etc. Our current global economic paradigm simply takes from Nature to only generate entropy, it never restores or regenerates that which it took to simply transform into entropy. This is all it is designed to do. It needs to be re-designed to support the creation of negative entropy, the giving back process to balance the taking process. This giving back process is the essence of economic growth, not the taking process as is currently practiced globally leading to unbelievably disastrous catastrophic consequences for all life on Earth.

@@happymusicschool-it1qc For a second there when I read your comment, I thought you were talking about money. That all money in the world is debt, therefore choice, and we aren't tje ones making the choices, other people are, and we all suffer to pay it back. This money is driving the world to extinction because we are willing to do anything for money, which is as I say, just bank debt.

Leading climate scientists are broadly in agreement that the West Antarctica Ice Sheet, Greenland and the Great Barrier Reef have all tipped from one state to another. There's some debate still going about whether the Eastern Amazon rainforest should now be reclassified as a Savannah, meaning that too has tipped. Search online for the 'Climate Dominos' report by David Spratt.

Not sure that sanely managed counties can serve as a net counterpoint to those run by despots and criminals, and the plain greedy and ignorant, like the US where I live. Even most of the best run countries aren't doing enough. Count on humans taking action when a catastrophe is obvious, which in the case of environmental collapse will be far to late.
