Hi Gaylyn. I grew up in Georgia and was lucky to see Black ballet dancers. But I spent time btwn the White and Black studios, Atlanta Ballet and Ballethnic Academy of Dance. I got serious after college from encouragement from teachers at city dance studios (in DC). It took a while and also getting serious at 23, you know that is old. But I kept working and made it into a ballet company called Ballet Ariel. I am a misfit here for obvious reasons of race, culture (if AA is out of place, imagine being Nigerian too, both I mean, twice removed), age (the oldest here), technical skills, socioeconomic background from youth, no nice two parent home, like every difference impacts me. Not to mention two negative racial experiences from a guest dancer here who is White and well liked, so it further isolates me. Then add the election and I am out of place constantly and so not connect to people who I am so different from. I was looking for encouragement bcs I am considering letting this go. I am 38 now and just don't feel like being uncomfortable with a lot of people who are similar to each other and thus connect, including POC. I have no one to connect to here and don't really talk to anyone, which is awkward for me to say the least, but I enjoy! the dancing part. But I am a misfit. And yes, am the one in my brown tights and shoes, always the only one. Your video has given me encouragement in acknowledging the differences and how that impacts a person. So I actually will let it be, my inability to engage with ppl I have nothing in common with except dance. I will continue and see how far I get, focusing on the dance part. Accepting I guess the obvious lines. Hopefully I can still be great. I just won't experience social acceptance. Yes that had to have been hard being the only one. Your dancing now is lovely. It would be so nice to see you in pointe shoes. I see this too. Thank you for sharing your story. It feels oppressive, this company, if I don't have an outlet of others who are misfits. Now I feel okay. Thank you. You give me courage to open up and phone home for others like me. And continue, awkwardness be damned.

as a beginner dancer, oh my god are these good stretches! 😭 when I straddle and reached over I could ACTUALLY reach my left toe- I’ve never been able to do that! PLUS I’m way closer to the ground than I was a few minutes ago on my split! Thank you!
