I know this song has been done before, but I transcribe these myself and try to bring the most accurate and honest tabs to the original recordings as I can. I then present the material in a fun and digestible way. Enjoy! I had fun doing this one!

And we're so glad you keep doing it! By the way, it’s not only because of the (pretty good) movie but I was wondering if it would be fun for you to tutorial "Girl from the North Country" (not the Dylan/Cash sessions version)? Cause I would be happy to sponsor it.

Love this, but it sure got challenging for me to keep up once you started adding melodies and speed.

Play what you can. My goal is to only occasionally push the speed. I know I'll lose some people in those moments, but want to show what's possible and what you can aim for!

Hi Mike. Love your videos and the proud owner of a printed, spiral bound "strum it like a cowboy". I'm relatively new to playing guitar but this is my favourite type of music. For my own spiritual wellbeing I think I need to play this song, but your technique here is way above my level. What do you think about just applying the basic travis picking approach you teach (just "thumb, thumb, thumb-index, thumb") to the basic chords for now? Any alternatives or tips for someone who's new to this whole lark? Also just wanted to say, thanks for the book and all the other content. I really like your style. So beginner friendly and with a great sense of humour. Regards from the UK!

Just being myself, man. I put hours of time into this channel, and if I had to be dry the entire time I wouldn't be creating nearly this much free stuff. And it's doubtful I would have made the friends I have. I get great feedback on the banter and light heartedness, I know it's not for everyone, but please realize it's an impossible position to make everyone happy. So just tap that "L" button when you get annoyed and stay for the excellent guitar content.

@@gonedeadtrain690 Man. It's a free 30 minute video with an awesome explanation of every measure, and one of the most accurate tabs you'll find anywhere of the song....and i'm charging NOTHING. In this 30 minutes I probably spend 15 seconds showing off my excitement for life. If this bugs you buddy, there are plenty of other channels you can get your guitar content from.

The lyrics were by a leader of the French Resistance and drawn from episodes of his life. The "old woman" in Cohen was actually an old man (un vieux homme). In the original he speaks as well of returning to the shadows (not coming from them).

Great song. Another tab I saw online showed that you can pretty much tune the E string to F and then you can play that note open instead of using the thumb like that, then you just need to shift the G notes on third fret to 2nd fret and it should be easier.
@MikesMusicMethod4 күн бұрын
Ha, that's certainly a work around. In the folk world I kind of see the thumb over the top as a pretty essential skill to develop. But yes, if it's impossible for you there are work arounds. I have a video called "barre chords are overrated" if you're looking for some that don't involve retuning.

You could always just grab the tab. I'm trying to keep these engaging, fun, and digestible. The "L" key is also quite easy to find and click if it's too much for ya. And to be fair, my more recent videos are heavily timestamped and a bit more direct. But never without some banter.
@travelsinchinese6407 күн бұрын
Thank you for your effort in creating this tutorial; the technical aspects are really well explained. However, I feel that the song's somber and profound nature could be better reflected in the tone of the video. The Partisan is about humanity's capacity for both destruction and sacrifice, and its historical and emotional weight is immense. The French lyrics are beautiful and speak deeply of death and hope-not 'the Eiffel Tower.' I hope you'll consider the reverence and spirit of such art to better align with the artist's vision in the future. Thank you for sharing your work.
@MikesMusicMethod6 күн бұрын
thanks for the comment. Trying my best to make these digestible and fun. But, ha. Sorry, no way! I find that the songs I most love and respect get the most amount of scrutiny and poked fun and rewriting of lyrics. You've never had a friend where you'd just have the most hilarious times ripping on each other's favorite songs?! My wife and I constantly do it to each other and end up doubled over in laughter. There's no art too serious or too good to not have fun with.

Was perfectly happy to maintain my $2/mo contributions despite being undisciplined and not using the material. My associated credit card was stolen, now im getting the itch to pick again, and now you lay out a path to my first or second favorite of dylan's ballads. *re-subscribing* oh, and thanks for your taste (pretty much only teach songs I love and can't find elsewhere", charisma (even when I'm bad and not picking along these videos are fun), and guidance (teachers are the epitome of heroism, but special honors ought be afforded to those who hold our society together by passing on the visual and musical arts!)

Max, thanks so much for the lovely note. I appreciate the support. It really does keep the channeling churning and gurgling. Appreciated! And thanks for the kind note. It's still hard to put the TEACHER label above the SONGWRITER label, but alas, i'm certainly more popular as an educator. And yes, we need to shout out the unsung heroes: our educators. well...some of them at least. Cause a lot of them at my Catholic grade school.... I'll bite my tongue! ;)

Nate. I teach private guitar for a living, plenty of kids your age. My main piece of advice is that this is a long game. If it were super easy everyone would be a guitarist. Just when you begin to think you're not good enough is usually when you're about to make breakthroughs. I have a few videos about "are barre chords overrated" and another one. Just go to my channel page and there's a little search bar and put in barre chords. Are you doing any scale work? And I'd love to keep this chat going but the KZbin comments is a poor place. Either join the discord or shoot me an email at Mikesmusic [email protected]

Haha, I appreciate the feedback! And you're not the only one to give it. But I get a lot more people telling me they like to have me there as a person like I'm giving them a lesson. And it's these latter people that are the ones usually kicking in with monthly support. Although I will say I think my more recent videos stay on track a bit more. But there's always gonna be some of my self injected in there. It's heartless without it.
