I fix clocks, so besides low-carbon steel I see lots of brass, which indeed becomes softer if quenched instead of air-cooled. Most clock steel is okay if just air-cooled down from cherry red, but I haven't tried oil cooling just yet. And after all that, what on Earth is a habaki?
@RainyDayForge4 сағат бұрын
Is fixing clocks your hobby? I love those mechanics! The habaki is the copper sleeve just above the handle (Tsuka.) It's purpose is to wedge itself into the opening of the saya (Sheath) so that it a compression fit and doesn't slide off too easily.

Can you make another blade just like that dimensionally but with regular d2 or 14c28n? Also with a full tang. Id probably buy it
I love Cold working copper and bronze, its weird until you get used to it but fun. I actually made some copper broadheads i used to take a deer with my atlatl during archery season.

If you want a full anneal don't dump it in the water. The slower you can cool the metal the more it will soften.
@RainyDayForgeКүн бұрын
Copper isn’t like that. I don’t know the reasons for it (non ferric?) but it needs to be cooled rapidly to be annealed. Otherwise, my piece would not have survived the transformation.

But I did. Some modern files are case hardened. If I would have had one of them, it would not have hardened. I certainly could have gone further with it by testing a few tokens and HTing them at different temperatures.

Went on a boyscout trip up northern pa. Trailer we stayed in was located in an old white pine grove. Wind storm blew half tree down closer than that next to trailer. Probably 30in. diameter. Would of cut trailer in half on end we were sleeping in. Nothing was ever mentioned to the parents. Lmao😂.

@RainyDayForge2 ай бұрын
Good idea. I haven’t played with that creative aspect much.
@global0012 ай бұрын
Quick tip. Your settings were 1/320 F2.8 IS0800. Don’t need that fast a shutter speed for non flash lights and on a tripod camera, so reduce it so you can reduce the ISO from 800 down to the base ISO of 100. Maybe increase the brightness of the lights to accommodate. Reduces noise in the image if you ever want to print big.
@michaelmirecki31142 ай бұрын
I agree, but I’d also be concerned with moving the light more of an angle to reduce the light on the background and probably move the light above towards the background and angle it a little towards the camera to give the knife more of a rim light. Then use small fill cards in the front to try and bring up the knife, without adding too much illumination to the background
@RainyDayForge2 ай бұрын
Thanks! I’d love to drop my iso but I’m not on a tripod and that’s why I have the shutter at 1/320. Because I’m working with a reflective surface, it’s nice to be able to move around easily. For the lights, I like casting shadows, so I keep them at a nominal intensity for that.
