Hey there resident of Warner Springs. The reason it’s so lush is because it is in fact not a desert. We have deserts near us, but we’re more of highland.

As an avid PCT docu-viewer, I'm astonished these episodes have a fraction of the views of other 2022 Thru-hikers. One of the best narration and production pieces I've seen in the genre. I don't know if it is algorithms or what, but CJ, you've done a remarkable job capturing your experience and providing a pride-instilling work of art my friend. Great job adapting to the trail experience, you should be very proud of this life experience!

SO well done, Jack !!! Much enjoyed every episode ! SO reminded me of when I lived in a tent, out in the wild (and off the wild) for 2 months ... 45 years ago. I wasn't hiking ... just escaping and learning, and confirming. Cheers Man, you made it as well !!! Congrats all around !!! ... Uncle Jimmy ... (especially got a kick out of that Captain Jack clip in the first episode that we made at the office, back when I helped you make your first website ... way back when you were just a newly emerging online tot ! ;-) ) ... I still have copies of all the versions of that site and all the vids (and many others of you) in my archives. Hope that you are doing splendidly ... seems like you are !!!

Uncle Jimmy! Really great to hear from you. Thanks for watching the whole series. We'll have to hang out near Atlantic Beach one of these days so I can hear more about your times in the tent long ago. I miss living out there and know that I'll be spending some more time in the woods before too long. That "Captain Jack" webcam clip was the perfect prelude to me receiving the trail name Captain Jack. It came up serendipitously from friends, felt like coming full circle to that young self. I would love to see your archives of the website and any other material from those early years. Cheers :)

Thanks Dos Equis 🙂 That's the same year my friend Kamila (who partly inspired me to thru-hike) went. I heard it was a strange year but awesome in certain ways. Less trail magic but more of the wilderness to yourself since not a lot of hikers stuck it out.

I agree. Your bigger than life experience is told so beautifully, and with such truth about your real feelings. It is a generous gift, this series. A mix of remarkable film surprises, music choices, and, of course, your words.. so nice. I love chuckling over the selfish ant being scolded for not pulling his weight. And minutes later, my eyes are full of water, as you sort out the big universal questions speaking to you. I feel the way you cherish your friendships, the heart you have for nature..And I don't want this to end. I will always think of you out there in nature, doing your dances, naming the creatures, taking us to the edge of scary ledges. All in a most original way. I want more!!! I want a whole film. Thank you for putting this out here for us to share.

"To me, a mountain is a Buddha. Think of the patience. Hundreds of thousands of years just sittin there being perfectly perfectly silent. Like praying for all living creatures in that silence and just waitin for us to stop all our frettin and foolin." Loved that sequence so badly. awesome stuff. The mountains always give me this mythological-spiritual sensation. I strongly remember the walk towards Mt Shasta for example. Seeing him for days if not weeks in the distance. perceiving him as a breathing entity, beyond a naturalistic ontology. and walking slowly towards him as if we are walking towards a sacred tample. A pilgrimage. Also holy shit that is some crazy fire footage. I was just a day ahead if i remember right. blazed through glacier peak to run away from this fire. then waited for salvation in Stehekin. I'm wandering for how long a continuous thru hike of the PCT will be feasible.

Man this is the greatest reunion since led zeppelin's in 2007 I love the Sthekin (סטחיקן) take. extremely based. The PCT allowed us to travel in time in the USA. To see and understand different realities, different people Carl and his otherworldly Goat Chesse. a legend. The mysterious dude from the Post office. And Rachel. Oh Rachel. She's the real deal. (7:55) "Do y'all want me to go ahead.." hahah absolutely hilarious
@CaptainJackHikes Жыл бұрын
Yes. I really liked the America we saw on the PCT. Feels more like the version my parents talk of from their childhoods. My parents laughed when you laughed at Goat Cheese haha. Post Office man and all the unclaimed resupply boxes from all the thru-hikers that bailed. Rachel. My Mom said "what a lovely person."

"And just like that, it was over We had finished Finished what? Nothing was different It was just another day What did i think was going to happen?" Goddamnit. The arbitrariness, the meaninglessness. Your ability to capture these sensations, to present various layers and different aspects of the thru hiking experience is unmatchable. a real depction of one's journey. truly eye opening. "Things came into focus" (2:45) gave me some serious chills. The writing, the scenes, the music. What an incredible piece of art you have created. Congratulations Jack Until the next one ❤️😉

Ishay, you give the best damn reactions haha. I'm really glad you enjoyed the more subtle, less glorified realities of trail that I tried to show. Absolutely beautiful conclusion to your journey. Like others here, I hope you continue to make videos, and if not, that is okay too. I think one of the lessons I learned from the PCT is that all things come to an end at some point, and that's okay. Godspeed Captain Jack.

Such a great Vid Captain Jack. I also Hiked in 2022, also paddled Ross Lake to the boarder and am also struggling to get back to life after the trail. We must have just missed you. Wow, can't believe we traced such a similar path. It's so true... living outside, jumping into lakes, making fires, being fully present in every conversation and human moment... it really does make us younger. I miss that me. But I'm also happy to know that I will forever have the confidence and spirit to do something this big, should the opportunity arise again.

Love the uncanny Dharma Bums revelations. Kerouac was also a fire lookout for a short spell up on Desolation Peak in the North Cascades :)) love it when great writers love all these mountain ranges we're still cherishing all these years later. Muir and Kerouac and Abbey and all the rest... - familiar faces again! awww miss all these folks - ackkkkk tent mouse attack!! felt really lucky not to have any invade my Duplex. tent-chewing lil bastards - great music selection and edits - faaackkk that fire footage is nuts. I had the heavy smoke after Stevens but didn't see anything like that, damn. Must have been crazy to have been caught up in an active evac when you just went for resupply and whatnot. Props on having the presence of mind to keep documenting! - ooh ya hiking in an N95, love to have that sweat pooling around my chin lol. Truly a heinous couple days - truly was glorious after the rain came, ahhhh - marmot television 😍
@CaptainJackHikes Жыл бұрын
There may be more Kerouac serendipity to come 😉 - I thought I would get thru mouse free ... but alas, I was raided - Dude, I thought I was escaping the fires by heading west... then woke up in a new fire. It was an intense 24 hour detour... but gave me more perspective on what these situations are like for local residents. Truly wild. - A lot of folks tapped out on that smoky Glacier Peak section... and I don't blame them. But I know we shared the same level of wild-eyed, hare-brained determination by that point... kind of scary to imagine what it would've taken for us to turn around (flames on trail... ?)

Thank you for sharing your journey Jack, I always get excited when I see you´ve uploaded! Watching your videos along with all the other great PCT documentaries available on this platform has given me an itch to do the same thing.. a desire to break with my urban habits and go on this massive undertaking, to at least for a while become part of nature instead of a spectator to it. I'm currently saving up and planning to do some shorter hikes here in Europe in the coming year to see if I'm up for it. Thank you for inspiring me and I can't wait to see how your journey continues!
@CaptainJackHikes Жыл бұрын
I am so happy to hear I've played some small part in inspiring you. We all came from nature but modern life has disconnected us from it. I think there's something really powerful about stepping away from the urban grind and reconnecting with a simpler nomadic existence in the woods, whether that's a few weeks or many years. It will teach you more about yourself... and rekindle your relationship with this beautiful planet.

Great job capturing all the feels of reaching Washington. When you can see the end, all of a sudden its all you can think about, and its both a blessing and a curse. And I was wondering if you might get a passerby during your dance breaks... lol, so good. I'm looking forward to seeing reactions to the fire closure at the border. I was following that last year and while the end is so bittersweet, not reaching it after all that time, it has to be a real mind-f***.

So true! As my first thru-hike, it was infinitely long until suddenly it was shockingly short. So trippy to wrap your head around actually finishing and going back to "normal" after so many months of it. We'll see what kinds of antics I'm able to pull at the end 😉
