I believe in an in-depth exploration of a local region. On my first visit I went all over Tokyo with side trips to the Boso peninsula, Sendai and Enoshima. I didn't plan enough, so I didn't make the best use of my time. On my second trip I went to Osaka and explored Nara prefecture, going out to Ise one day to see the Grand Shrines. Two days were spent seeing the major sites in Kyoto and then going to Hiroshima prefecture to see the Peace park, then returning the next day to visit Takehara and Kure. The Maritime Museums in Kure are a must see if you're interested. They're across the street from each other. I was over prepared that time, so I missed a lot because I didn't have enough time to see it all.
