@@RcWoodturning Wood burns, so if you do fall asleep......it could catch on fire. It's only really safe if you can monitor it 24/7 which defeats the purpose of using light. The wooden candle holders burn, all the others don't, i would say this speaks Beyond preference And enters into a safety issue. However, your work is very very good.
@RcWoodturning
@RcWoodturning 5 күн бұрын
@yashawngray9289 Ya, I've done many tests. The tea lights simply don't get hot enough to ignite the wood. You should never leave any candle unattended. Most house fires from candles happen for that very reason.

great stuff. i think u r a little impatient and it affects your overall craftsmanship but still. great stuff. just a tip? make a mark on the bit for the depth that way u get it the same on all 3 pieces so the candles sit the same exact height on the inside. other than that, awesome vid man. cant wait to get into this kinda stuff.

Just joined your channel the other day so I have not gone back to look at older videos yet. I may ask questions you have responded to already so have patience with me. I am a left hand turner also. I see you turning from the back side some. Thought you would run in reverse and cut from the center back towards you but you run in forward and reach across the bed. I will have to give that a try. Question about your scraper you made from round stock. Are you repurposing a used up gouge? Enough questions for today. Nice bowl from fog wood.
@RcWoodturning
@RcWoodturning 7 күн бұрын
My lathe doesn't have reverse so I turn from the backside when I'm doing end grain or inside a bowl. My scraper is made from a tie rod off an intensifier used for water jet cutting. I used to build them for a company. It was scrap from rebuilding them. It's a 3/4 shaft. I believe it's 1095 steel. It's a mix of stainless and high carbon steel.

Beautiful grain in that piece. Question on your friction polish. Assume that’s BLO, DNA and shellac. Do you make your shellac from flakes or use off the shelf? If flakes, what # cut do you make?? Love your vids! Dan
@RcWoodturning
@RcWoodturning 7 күн бұрын
Thank you Dan! I use the can from the hardware store. I want to try flakes, but haven't yet. I would use 3#. The idea is to use as much shellac as possible. That gives the best and longest lasting shine. What I do is use it out of the can. I don't add alcohol because it's already in there. So I add just enough oil so it doesn't get sticky when I apply it. I haven't worked out measurements yet. If I use a 12 oz container I would add about 1 oz of oil. That's approximate. Lately I've been opening the can and letting it sit for about 30 minutes to let some of the alcohol evaporate because it's pretty thin. I like my mix to be thicker then water. About the consistency of coffee creamer. Hope that helps.
