Congrats on the new lathe. You deserve it. I have enjoyed your branch and 4x4 videos. Trying to get back into it again after a long time away. Feels like starting all over again. Thank you! I'm glad your enjoying them! The spacer is a backing plate for more support on the turning blank.

I have been looking for a true full variable speed lathe. No belt & pulley changing. What would you recommend?

I'm not that familiar with that many brands. I would say look for something with an electronic speed control and also which ever has the lowest rpm speed. Sorry I can't help more with that.

Get a one way,if you can afford it. You can turn it down to 1rev per minute if you want to.
