Riveting talk. The rapid political shift of the last decade is a kind of grieving over the loss of the dignity of work.

. (8:00) If the economic elites took money from production and invested it in the financial market, which is an unproductive activity, then countries deindustrialized and industrial productive activity took a back seat in the economy. Therefore, workers' salaries also took a back seat and ceased to be attractive, and their professionals lost social status. Who would want to work in an activity in decline? Only immigrants who live in poverty-stricken countries or countries at war.

...My name is Luigi Mangione and I'm here to start the Populist Revolution..."See me, feel me, touch me, Heal me..." Michael Sandel's book of 1996 spoke in the language of academia but not in the language of blood, sweat and tears...the human discontent is now rage facing the "containment regimes" supporting the "ruling" elites.

How dumb to chastise education! The problem is wealthy capitalists who suck up profits & ship jobs overseas, lawmakers who won’t raise the minimum wage and institute national healthcare programs, and quite frankly, people who - after living in America now for several generations - still think they should be working in a factory and don’t want to better themselves. 🙄 The ambitious who seek to better themselves with degrees or their own businesses are the ones we SHOULD be championing!

Prof Sandel is a true old school liberal progressive. Very different from today's Democratic Party, which is an elitist absolutist ideology. Hope young people don't confuse the two. Democratic Party here in 2024 betrayed its progressive path.

To effectively combat populism, we must start by renewing the dignity of work. This means advocating for fair wages, better working conditions, and job security, which can empower individuals and strengthen communities. We should also promote pathways for skill development and continuous learning, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society. By fostering an environment where work is seen as a source of pride and purpose rather than merely a means of survival, we can counter the divisive narratives often perpetuated by populist movements. Ultimately, embracing the value of work can unite us in a common cause, promoting a shared vision of prosperity that uplifts all members of society.

I agree with this analysis very much… just one other thing… the Democrats have not only abandoned the working class, they have simultaneously also been pushing their culturally far-left social ideas and policies. I mean things like DEI, ‘trans-inclusivity’, ‘wokeness’, drug legalisation, etc… so they would need to abandon this sort of thing as well if they want to earn votes again from the working class. Traditionally-minded people will never support this sort of thing… and working people are perennially traditional-minded.

Who doesn’t respect sanitation workers? Or road workers? Not me. I am thankful- I suppose women have something in common with the sanitation worker- being told who or what is our contribution. Had a man who had multiple degrees and his contribution to work was to tell me- his boss- he had to go to the doctor because he got a UTI from jacking off to much. Not sure what his contribution to the workplace was?

"that ugliness and the peril it poses.....strikes us so prodoundly that it can also distract us from asking.. Nothing we offer working people..." The irony of his words is that this allusion to "we" which he keeps using is evidence of the very upper class hubris which he higlights! Astonishing too that an obviously intelligent person like this could regard Biden with anything other than dismay and contempt. "Has to address a widespread sense of disempowerment". There is an underlying condescaneding tone of this professor claiming to be concerned about the under priviledged yet while doing so continuting to regard those not at his level of achievement as inherently "not us". Of course superior professors like this determine what grievances are legitmate (his word) and which grievances are not legitmate. Michael Sandel is an example of the very hubris he warns about. He states that only 30% of US citizens have university degree and does not dream of himself addressing the 70%. His audience will remain the 30% and those from the priviledged class who do address the 70% will continue to be dismissed as "populist". The "Phoney-Tony" Blair quotation-"questioning globalisation is like questioning whether winter autumn should follow winter" is ironical given that globalists are busy working on ways of changing world climates. Having said all that, I think his intellectual concern is genuine and his comment sabout people's sense of being themselve obsolescent is spot on. I don't think that so-called "progressive" parties will give a hoot about people being recognised and honoured for contributing to the common good and the dignity of labour. Has Michael Sandel not even heard of the World Economic Forum ? The Blidebergers? Doesnt he know that the globalists have "progressive parties" in their pocket and have no intention of following the kind of "political agenda" which he is advocating here?

@MrYorickJenkins
@MrYorickJenkins Ай бұрын
@@Komorebineeded I do NOT "misunderstand the context". He uses "we" as an authoritarian trick to sublimally suggest that his audiences reached his opinions by some kind of intellectual interaction between him and them. But no such interaction took place! He is handing down truths to his audience but hasnt the honesty to admit he is doing so. By using the word "we" instead of "I" and having the temerity to talk about a discussion when no discussion takes place, he distracts people's attention from the fact that he is telling people what to think. His is a one way discourse. He oozes arrogance and complacency. The use of "we" hwen giving a monologue is fundamentally patronising and authoritarian in my opinion and a misuse of the language. Sadly it is very widely practised and this guy is the rule and not the exception. I am utterly fed up with smart alecs on you tube saying "we are going to discuss" and "we think" when what they are doing is lecturing and preaching sermons.

If there were a functioning meritocracy, I'd be more sympathetic to it. But that kind of talk is for the propagandists and "intellectuals". If you read business or management magazines or advice on climbing the corporate ladder, nobody there pretends we have a meritocracy. And I think we should stop lying to kids that there is one.

Why would anyone say they are against "populism"? That's like pro-choice people accepting the label of "anti-life". You're literally saying you are against the general public. It's an inherently elitist thing to say. Say you're against "fascism", which, afaict, is the same as "right-wing populism"
