This park was created by queen Amalia and was the palace garden. Until 1975 it was called Royal Garden and was renamed National Garden since then. What is now the Parliament building, was originally king Othon's palace. The old Parliament building is in Stadiou street, behind Kolokotronis statue and is now a museum. In 1910, the palace moved to a new building in Herodou Attikou Street, where now is the Presidential Megaro (Mansion), next to Megaro Maximou that houses the Prime Minister's office. As the palace moved to the new building, the Royal Garden was opened to the public after 1927. The park has an area of 185 000 m2 and if the Zappeion Megaro park is added, then it is about 285 000 m2. There are four entrances - exits to the National Garden: The West entrance is the one you got in, in Amalia's street. The South entrance is the one you got out, in the back of Zappeion Megaro. The East entrance is in Herodou Attikou Street (but this may not be open), across the street from the Presidential Megaro, where there is an Evzone guard in the entrance. If you walk to the left, you come across the street from the Athens Olympic Stadium. The North entrance is from Vasilisis Sophia's street, between the Presidential Guard's barracks and the main entrance to the Parliament Building. If you got lost in the National Garden, don't worry about it, I do it all the time too. I either follow the crowd that usually goes towards an exit, or I follow the path towards the fence and then i follow whatever path runs close to the fence until I find one of the exits lol. By the way, the sidewalk near the main entrance in Amalia's street is the best place to stand in order to watch the military parade in Athens, on March 25th at 11:00am, celebrating the 1821 revolution against the Ottoman Empire leading to the independence of Greece. However one needs to go about 30 min. earlier to find a relatively good place to stand. At the end of the parade, the best way to leave is towards the Acropolis Metro station, or try to find a tram station past Zappeion. The alternative is to wait for about an hour, until all the officials leave from Syntagma Square, so that Amalia's street will open for the public towards Syntagma. Watching the military parade is an interesting experience, if you don't mind standing and walking for over three hours, in a very crowded place. When I was younger I used to go there every year, but now I prefer to watch the parades on TV. On October 28, there is also a military parade in Thessaloniki, celebrating the Greek resistance against the Italian invasion of Greece in 1940, signaling the entrance of Greece in WW2 on the side of Britain. kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXEqWZ8oZKIkNE kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaHLhKt8aZyZjLs

Hello!! This is the Greek tortoise and it can live up to 200 years. Imagine that this animal you met in the National Garden, may have lived long enough to see the outbreak of the Greek Revolution back in the 1820s. This tortoise needs our full attention cause it is in danger of extinction. Thank you both for making this video, Best Regards

The other big park in Athens center is Pedion toy Areos. The most nice and big tho is a lil bit further. Alsos Neas Filadelphias and Parko Tritsi, both of them located northwest of city center. If you find time check them out. Love your videos and your content!

At classic old greek movies 1950-1960-1970 actors at the novie plot say <Vasilikos kipos> (royal garden). That is the old name, instead of <Ethnikos kipos > (National garden) nowdays. We are grateful for all that Royal family of King Otto and King George contributed to Greece and greek nation.

Who is "we"? Because the vast majority of greeks loathes all kings and queens that ruled here after 1821, that's why we kicked them out and their ancestors are not allowed to call themselves royal any more. They were all foreign, appointed by our "ally" countries after 1821 to protect these countries interests, not of the greek people. They took insane amount of money from greek people to maintain their lavish lifestyle while the greek people literally starved to death.

@@anonymous-qc3sy In reality, the corrupt political parties (after junta), did and still do thousand times more damage to the public state founds (the two biggest parties owe over 500million euro to the state funds). Just the president alone (Κατερίνα Σακελλαροπούλου) has higher expenses than the former royal family during their period. She upped the expenses again +35% to last year. And then you wonder how the current the ministers and the president, are able to buy 20-40 new houses within a few years, just with their state salary! They steal as much public money as they can. Because they now they won't have enough time to keep their seats (αρπάζουν όσο προλαβαίνουν). The royal family, had also expenses, but they were far lower than we have today. They had just 2-3 villas. At least they created a prestige in the upper echelons of this country, that is not existent today. They also created public connections with important people from other countries. Which was a huge plus for the international diplomacy of our country. Other European countries still have their royals (Netherlands, UK, Germany, Denmark, Spain, etc.), and no one bats an eye.

Ι 've been to different cities around the world and this garden in Athens is maybe one of my favourites. Most of the big cities abroad have many big parks but it's more like an open green space with tall trees scattered around. This particular park has for its size an extraordinary number of plants, trees and plants. Isn't just grass and trees, but Athens also needs a big open green space.

Another great video! I can't wait to visit Salamina next year. The only thing is there aren't many hotels on the island. I did an extenstive search and found a few very expensive ones, and a few cheap ones (very small and no sea view) that didn't look too good. Nothing much in the middle, but overall the choices were very few, like under 10! :-( I am guessing most people go there from Athens and do not stay overnight.

Thank you so much!😃❤️ You are right, there are not many hotels in Salamina... Many Athenians have summer house there, or people come for a daytrip as you said😎
