I really think the personality of a collie is dependent on breeding and their line. My collie is the quietest dog I’ve ever had. He isn’t vocal. He also is a 2 on the energy scale - he requires next to no exercise. He is also fine on his own in the backyard whilst I’m working/out of the house and has been this way since he was a puppy. His coat is a lot to maintain but besides that he’s the best dog Ive ever had. He can be stubborn but is well behaved. Aloof with strangers but very friendly once he knows you’re a welcome visitor. He’s so gentle and loving towards babies/children. He is the perfect family dog. I would encourage anyone considering this breed to research breeders and find a good show line. If you tell the breeder what you’d like in a temperament there would be a collie for you.

I have had collies most of my adult life. My current pup is Lelani (11yo) and our late puppy a harlequin blue Merle collie, Kakoa would have been 16 months today. He arrived on 8/18/23 and we lost him to an accident on8/18/24. Please love your four legged babies. Hug them often and enjoy your time with them as their time is too short but the love they return is immense

Hey how come you haven’t posted in for forever where’s everyone been at ?

I grew up with a collie; named Miele. Incredible animal. After he died, my family got involved with German Shepherds which we've owned, bred, trained & shown both here in the States as well as in Germany. I, still to this day think of Miele! As great as the Shepherds are; i still miss Miele. The 2 breeds share similarities; strong prey drive, enjoy doing obedience, loyal & protective. But, the collie is more sensitive and docile around the house. I have many ask me, because they know how much i love the German Shepherd; if i were to get involved with another breed, what would it be, a Doberman, Rottweiler, Belgian Malinois, Giant Schnauzer? I say no to all; i tell them it would most definitely be a collie, hands down! The older i get the more I'm becoming more drawn to my child hood dog, the collie. Yes, i have a 2 year old male German Shepherd now, plenty of both time and room for a great Collie puppy too. I truly enjoyed watching the video, took me down memory lane; got me thinking once again,,,,,,,

I had a rough collie and 2 shelties at the same time. My rough collie was the leader. So.... not completely true as you are saying. Every dog is different.... personality is different... Depends on the parents they had (the breed). They both love to work for you, but a sheltie is 99% pleasable. Rough collie I think 95%. Same for agression. Yes they are normally not agressive... but I knew a rough collie that was... so... it depends on the breed.

i know shelties and rough collies look very similar (i have a sheltie). but how do they compare in temperament? are rough collies chill and relaxed dogs or are they energetic like a sheltie is?

Absolutely gorgeous Collie :) I recently got my first Rough Collie and he is now 4 months old. I have always wanted a Rough Collie since I was a little girl and my dream has come true! I am in crazy love with Colin and even though of him being in a little puppy has been overload of cuteness, I am really looking forward seeing him all grown up and watch him how handsome boy he is going to be :)

I am 76 and my husband is 77. We have a 7 year old Sheltie that we love and walk every day. His name is Rio and we are about to get another Sheltie from the same breeder who is highly regarded. Her pups will be ready for adoption in two weeks. We live in South Carolina and once the summer heat begins it will be a challenge to take one walk let alone two. Our yard is small. I am having some doubts as to the wisdom of getting another Sheltie. Just keeping Rio groomed and his nails clipped is a lot. Would it be fair to get another Sheltie? Thank you for your advice. I never had collies but as a child I remember seeing them walk on the street with my neighbor. He had 3 incredibly smart collies that didn’t even need a leash. They were majestic and so intelligent. Pretty much the entire city (200k people) stopped to watch as he passed through the streets. Everyone wanted to pet them. They were pretty much the celebrities of my town. I always wanted to have one until I started to read more about the breed and realized it wasn’t a match. They need a lot of exercise and fun activities to keep them happy and healthy. I am more of a couch potato. 😊

I’m waiting for about 20 years to get a rough collie - I’m 27y old now and this year my dream will come true ❤ no one in my family can tell me why I want this doggo so badly 😅 love at the first sight I think 😂

I love how you describe your dogs but the owner of two rough collies I could tell you some of this isn't really accurate but they are a good breed too have and you put the intelligence of them really lightly they are extremely smart and learn really quickly

Grooming of a Sheltie I have found is no hardship at all. Combing for 10-15 minutes a week will do, trimming nails and paw fur and ears. That is is it.
