Heya mate! So this is a tough one as there are so many variables: budget, feel of the camera, interface etc. What works for one person and feels comfortable may be completely different to somebody else. I'd always suggest going to your local camera shop and having a word with them to get their recommendations 😎

I have a infiniray XH09 for my smartphone. I use it mainly in hides where I can mount it on a tripod and use it to scan the area of interest hands free using the phone screen. This means that I can very quickly use my camera and/or binos. I also use it mounted on a hand held grip on walkabouts to see what is around in a particular area - edges of reed beds/ clearings etc. I find it very useful in locating otherwise difficult to see targets - small birds in trees, rabbits and deer in the forest etc. Although not an essential item in my camera bag, it has proved it's worth in certain situations, My advice would be to borrow a thermal device and have a go before spending your hard earned dosh!

I think a system like Canon etc is way more practical than MFT. My R7 has the same pixel density as a 24MPX MFT. So, whatever a 600mm lens can do on MFT, if I crop to 24MPX I get the same with a 600mm lens on my R7. Now, I have the EF100-400L F5.6 ii which I use almost always. Sometimes I go to 560mm with the 1.4x iii TC. And then I have the EF 500mm F4 L is (the mk1). Which I use for lower light or when I can use a tripod. With the 1.4x that gives me a 700mm F5.6 lens. Great budget solutions. I think the RF 200-800 is great for FF bodies. The RF 100-500 L is the one to use for the R7 though. Great contribution. I enjoyed watching.

I've had a few years experience with a top of the range Pulsar model, which isn't mine. It was initially purchased for Nightjar observation and has proved very useful. However, the ability to see into vegetation, is quite limited as you can no longer see the bird or animal, with only a thin layer of vegetation in the way. I've found white hot, and hot red, to be the most useful colour palettes. I don't know about other makes and models, but with the Pulsar, you can toggle through a series of different contrast levels. I've found the lowest contrast level, most useful, even though it looks a bit dull and flat. At the higher contrast levels, too much glows red or white, such as trees, other vegetation and the ground. At the lower contrast levels, only living heat sources tend to show up. Thermal imagers show relative heat differences, so if the sun is strong, warming a lot of things up, and it is warm, it will be difficult separating the false signal of hot substrates, and warm blooded creatures.

I’m horrendously colour blind and struggle to find birds even when they’re perched right in front of me and singing or calling. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I would love a thermal device to help me find them, but at the same time they are expensive and it’s another thing to carry about 🫤

I have the same problem but also being deaf in one ear I find the Merlin app helps with hearing the bird calls for me and then I wait to see movement. I did purchase one of these to help with Owl finding and locating nightjars but in the end had to return it as Damien said an expensive paperweight.

I've never seen a Water Rail..EVER! And what is the very first bird you spot?? 😂😂 I did notice that the wheelchair access to the hides is sadly lacking. 😐😐
@damianjohnwildlife
@damianjohnwildlife 23 күн бұрын
I know! Absolutely insane luck but as it happens, I was tempted to jump downstairs to get a more eye level view with the water rail as the hide itself is on two levels. The first two hides you see in the video; The Joyce and Arthur Jacobs Hide (long name) and the Water Rail Hide are both wheelchair accessible albeit the view from the Joyce and Arthur Hide would be lacking. Same could be said for another wheelchair accessible hide around the corner 'The Hobby Hide'. it sadly tends to be a bit overgrown. As for the Flashes (opposite side of the reserve where I was hoping to see some waders) unfortunately none of the three hides are wheelchair accessible as access to the reserve is via some steps but I don't actually see why that couldn't be expanded on to make it easier to access for individuals in wheelchairs.

I subscribed because I like the way you casually present your videos, just everyday bird/wildlife photography, chatting away to your viewers and always upbeat - you keep positive even when things might go wrong or there isn't much around - although you do seem to get a lot of good luck in finding things to photograph, I have to say!! I did put the video on pause to look at the images you had picked out, and straight away the stonechat caught my eye. Such a pretty image. I too prefer environmental shots. I dislike real close-ups as they remind me of something in a bird identity book! 😁
