Both are great to have! If you're look specifically for edible species, Wild Edible Mushrooms of Ontario is the better one. The info/photos are clearer and more concise. I find that the information in Mushrooms of Ontario & Eastern Canada to be a little outdated (it was originally published in 1999), but it's always good to have multiple books to compare your findings to, especially when dealing with toxic lookalikes.

I made some violet symple syrup from fresh flowers, its a gorgeous lavender blue color. BUT, I did use one whole cup of fresh petals only(all the green removed completely) with the 1 cup water infuse, then 1 cup sugar. So apparently the parts all have to be equal for the right color, and you have to go through the tedious task of pulling out all the petals 😅 Worth it though. Can't wait to try grape hyacinths, picked dome today!

The only thing I would recommend when harvesting ramps is to only Harvest about 10% of the patch if you are going to be taking the bulbs, which are the best part, but the whole plant is good. Don't forget about the roots of garlic mustard as you can get an excellent spicy horseradish like substitute out of them, which are best harvested in spring or fall. And make sure to harvest garlic mustard before it has flowered otherwise it can get quite bitter, like many different plants. Hope you find lots this year!

I came across my first patch of ramps last year and I took a few of the leaves to make pesto, since it was a relatively small patch and I didn't want to harvest the bulbs. I also made pesto with a bunch of garlic mustard I found in the spring before it flowered, but I'll have to try using the roots this year!

Great to see you starting to learn about mushrooms! It really is like treasure hunting! Welcome to the mushroom geek club LOL! I do foraging tours near London Ontario where I teach wild edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms. Not sure where you are located in Ontario, but if you would like to come for a tour let me know! I definitely recommend taking multiple pictures of each mushroom and getting a few different mushroom guides. It's always great to be able to cross-reference and have multiple resources. A couple that I like are- mushrooms and other fungi of North America, the National Audobon Society Field Guide to North American mushrooms and the one that you already have on Ontario and Eastern Canada. The first white mushroom looks kind of like Russula brevipes based on the one picture, the second white mushroom looks to be either lactifluus deceptivus, or maybe lactarius piperatus. I think you're right about the laccaria. You will get lots of variability in the colour of turkey tail mushrooms, but the way to make sure that it's a turkey tail and not one of its look alike is to check the underside. If it has Pure White pores on the underside and not purple or toothed, and the top is slightly velvety when fresh, it's turkey tail. If you are on Instagram, you can reach out to me for identifications. I have lots of people that send me pictures and I enjoy helping to identify them! Happy Hunting! Thank you for all that information! I live in Toronto, but if I'm ever out towards London, I will definitely take you up on a tour! I followed you on Instagram so I can reach out to you if I need ID help 😊 I didn't include it in this video, but the underside of the turkey tail had pure white pores so I think that confirms that it was true turkey tail.

I can't for the life of me get my stems thick at all. I can get them straight but not thick so they can't support my mushroom head. Any tips??
@littleurbangardener
@littleurbangardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I feel like the only way to get them thicker is to use one of those larger glue guns that puts out thicker lines of glue. All of my stems were pretty thin as I was using a basic hot glue gun. You could try making the mushrooms heads smaller or the stems shorter. The taller the stems are, the less likely they will be able to support larger mushroom heads.

I know this is an old post and an old video but try wire and then covering the wire with the glue. I car upon this video because I am attempting to make realistic looking hot glue mushrooms for a display I’m working on. I need them to stick into something else as a base. I tried tooth picks first which worked for sticking them into the base but found thin wire to work better so the stems could be shaped the way I wanted. You can create stems then insert the wire if they are thick enough or you can create the stems on the wire itself.

turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) will come in a million different shades & colours. the give away is the underside which should be snow white (or close pending on the environmental variables) with super small, tightly packed pores (2 per mm) versicolor means "of several colors" you can also grow these at home if you like.
@littleurbangardener

The underside was white with tightly packed pores, so it confirms my suspicion that it was turkey tail! 😊

The problem with the bowl you used is that your hand movements stirred up the water. You can make the "stems" more straight by using a narrow/rectangular container. If you had something like a dish with cover that holds a stick of butter, then the stirring would be reduced. If you moved the glue gun parallel to the long dimension of the cover you would "draw a straight line"
