Now that the IFR flight portion of the Ground School App is done, I'm curious what's next if anything? Any plans for a commercial rating ground school? Or are you officially done? These are great!

Can you explain why if you do not get a LPV annunciation you must fly the missed approach? Why could you not just revert to LNAV Minimums and fly it as a non precision approach?
@65gtotripsКүн бұрын
Maybe if it’s called departure, pilots may think the tower is telling the pilot to contact departure and that’s why it’s better to say ‘upwind’ ?
@matthewsouza709Күн бұрын
You made a slight error around 14:40, saying you would have to conduct a missed approach at the final approach fix if it didn't switch to LPV, as you could've still used the LNAV minimums for the approach unless those were too high for the cloud layer.

Notes From this: Shake the Tree - once you feel like you're ready and set for your approach, question yourself, find out what you are missing or what you have not done that could make your approach / leg / hold safer or easier that you can do right now Location, location, location - when you hear the controller tell you your location on an approach, turn on that short term memory and prepare to write down / read back your approach clearance, its coming right now. 5 T's - Turn, Time, Twist, Throttle, Talk after T's check your A's - ATIS, Altimeter, Avionics, Approach, Airspeed/configuration How low, How long, Which way? - What are your minimums, are they set in the box if you have one? , How long? - time your final approach leg/measure it in DME, is it matching what's prescribed in the plate? , Which Way? - check your final approach course, does it match the runway you're supposedly landing on? What are you going to do missed, are you flying straight ahead or are you doing a climbing turn and at what altitude are you going to, which way are you going if you cant land? callouts for altitude - start calling your current altitude and your minimum altitude as soon as you are 1000 feet above that minimum. every 100 feet. it will keep you focused and talking and prevent wandering/distraction.

Yes, there’s plenty of time to add flaps. But the balloon might put you back in the clouds. I prefer to have flaps set at the FAF, but I know many do no-flaps until visual. Pros and cons to each

You’re definitely right that there are two opinions on this and either one is valid. But there’s no balloon that will put you back in the clouds.

Interesting how you teach an ILS. I teach, in this case, to hold 4000 until the GS is captured, then set the missed approach altitude. I agree with your flaps decision.
@gorgly1233 күн бұрын
Aren't the step downs for Localizer only approaches? I agree, why not just intercept the glide slope by maintaining altitude.
@ioniliescu39253 күн бұрын
@@gorgly123 yes, mainly for the LOC only approach. However, what he’s doing here is legal because once established on a charted segment and cleared, you can descend according to the step downs or MEAs, whichever is applicable. Rod Machado loves to make that point. I get why he does it, I’ve just never seen it done that way.

I love your teaching style and flow pattern. You stay ahead of the plane while continually working on what you can. Im going have to check out your app. Normally I use Sporty’s but your style seems more natural (best way I can put it). Awesome video!
You should have just intercepted the glideslope from 3,000 and then descended. You’re giving yourself more work and less time to get stable on the approach.
@peterellison22204 күн бұрын
I was curious as well, why not intercept the GS at 3000?
@210BoxClock4 күн бұрын
He was stable the entire time. He's complying with the stepdowns before the FAF, and then intercepting the glideslope at the glideslope intercept altitude. This is how to should be done.
@gorgly1233 күн бұрын
@@peterellison2220 I was wondering the same thing.
@swaggyqwikscop0r6943 күн бұрын
@@210BoxClock sure, if you think descending and leveling off twice before intercepting the glideslope is more stable than a continuous descent on the glideslope, then you’re correct
@doncharleslundell3 күн бұрын
He was also given an altitude to maintain until established, so he could have maintained 4000 until intercepting the glideslope. But stepping down until the FAF and then doing final configuration there works too. Personal preferences 😀

You are kind of required to load the procedure because DME required so you'd need those distance measurements of the fixes. The G1000 has DME PFD>DME

Should you monitor DME from the STS VOR. It seems like the chart required it (I know you were using GPS in place of DME, but it seems like it would have been easy enough to measure DME to STS)

I know this is an older vid... but to the point of the runway isn't moving.... in my initial IFR training, my CFII was laughing because, when I was close (2 mi) he said I was pointing at least 15 degrees off the runway before I corrected. So, he had me fly one without foggles, and said watch the DME and make smaller corrections as I got close. But to your point, I needed to make that visual connection to improve my training.

Im having trouble holding a turn in standard rate and maintaining altitude. My airplane has a G500 with ASI, ALT, AH, and a MC on standby. When I do turns based on the g500 I get them within 10° but when I do partial panel, I have to use a specific bank angle to hope that I am at standard rate. Maintaining altitude based on the G5 and stby instrument is a pain for me. Any tips and tricks would help thanks.

I'm finding your channel invaluable for getting caught back up on the knowledge portion of things before I start taking lessons again. Thanks for putting out the great content! One thing that stuck out to me was that I didn't see you brief your missed approach procedures. If there's one thing I remember from all those years ago, it's that. I know it's tough to cram everything you do into a short video, and you may have done it off-camera, but just wanted to point it out for others.
