I don't know why but Barrow, AK fascinates me. It's a hobby of mine to check their grocery stores on google maps and see how high the prices are. It makes my broke ass feel good.

I'm a new subscriber and I see that people have snowmobiles and ATVs however no place to actually purchase them so I can only assume that you have them transported from the mainland to your location. I watched the video on the price of the groceries my question is are ATVs and snowmobiles a lot more expensive because there is no place to purchase them or are the prices similar to the lower 48? .... Also do you ever go over to Russia being so close and shop there ? Perhaps prices would be more competitive with the lower 48 than there in Alaska or is that even an option?

15.39 for an 8 pack?!! That’s expensive. In my town, an 8 pack is only $8.

Damn I don't even wanna think about how much eggs cost up there now. Here in Southern California our price just hit $11.49 for a dozen. It quite literally the highest price I've ever seen here.

Major stores sometimes ship off under performing, out of season or overstocked products off to lower in stores/communities.

Great questions! There is a local Alaskan channel that each household can get free if they have the satellite for it. Internet here used to be very very slow and expensive until Starlink came around. And there is one cell service provider (GCI) here in Gambell.

My brother lives an hour outside of anchorage and don’t remember prices being this past this past summer but I noticed two bags of chips was a deal for like $15 bucks and it made me appreciate ohios prices on goods. I honestly don’t know how people can make their budget work in these types of remote areas. What makes it worth it to live in these places other than hunting/fishing?

Is there any form of law enforcement around? How do you guys handle things like potential crime/medical emergencies?
@WallaceUngwilukКүн бұрын
There are VPOs (village police officers) who are hired by the city. They don't have formal training like other police officers in other areas. A couple of them are out right now getting training. If there is a serious crime, the Alaska State Troopers get called and they fly in from Nome, Alaska. If there is a serious medical emergency, a medivac plane flies out and takes them to either Nome or Anchorage.

I’m a big tobacco guy, so I’m curious; do you guys have access to tobacco/alcohol? And you don’t have to answer, but do you have any recreational drug use? How do people take the edge off?
@WallaceUngwilukКүн бұрын
Both stores do sell tobacco products. Gambell and many other rural villages in Alaska are dry villages. Meaning alcohol is illegal here.
