I worked with a girl who's parents had a bunch of kids. She said they lived off the land, grew their own vegetables. They spent 200 dollars a year at the store for stuff like pastas, and a few other items they couldn't get from the land.

My mom grew up the same way. My grandparents had pigs, chicken and also cows if i remember correctly. They also grew all their fruits and vegetables. The only foods they bought was flour, sugar, some spices that dont grow here and rarely candy.

I live in a small village in the Yukon and I thought our groceries cost a lot. You have 2 stores and we only have one. Most of your stuff is more expensive than ours, especially considering the difference in money from US to Canadian. You have more stuff than we do in the second store. I love watching these videos. All the villages in the Yukon except for one are connected by road, which makes a big difference for prices. In Alaska a lot of the villages aren't connected to the road network.

This was many years ago, but I ate dried salmon dipped in seal oil that came from Gambell. I'm east of you by about 5 or 600 miles. My girlfriend was from Gambel, and she had her native food shipped to Fairbanks. Muktuk, fish and Stink (Walrus) food. I only ate the fish dipped in seal oil. Oh, and she had Eskimo ice cream which was berries mixed with Crisco. I've been in Alaska for 50 years and could live out there.

That stuffs expensive but honestly, it's not too far off from what we're paying in the lower states. Like cereal being 10 dollars there, the same box might be 5.99 at Kroger or Albertsons in the lower states. Some things there seem pretty expensive there but for most part, some things aren't too far off which means shits expensive everywhere at the moment

Up until 2020, the only grocery store in Trenton, NC looked similar to the first store. It was a decent (typical) store back in the 50s - 80s, but it became run down and the original owner’s son really let it go before selling it to an Indian (from India) family..that’s when it really took a dive. It became a beer and cigarettes store for the locals. Some of the prices at the nice store weren’t too bad. Water $10 per gallon is ridiculous! Highway robbery.

They seem to think lets move to Alaska they pay you to live there. But the truth is they don't pay you enough to cover the cost to buy food for a year let alone the cost to rent or gas to drive or for the heat to keep you warm. A gallon of milk in Florida is just over 2 dollars yet a quart is over 4 dollars in Alaska .

So the company that I've been employed by, for 35 years recently just asked me if I would like to finish out the rest of my 3. Year term in Alaska. At the end of my 36 month. I am being forced to retire With a full pension Plus Other Cash benefits. They said that all travel expenses are paid and they will provide a nice home for me to live in while I'm there working. After I reach retirement, I'll have full options to purchase the home from the company at a discount price. After looking at these prices and assuming that everything else is higher as well. My thinking is that they are gonna have to raise my income and my retirement package to at least 35%. After speaking with a friend of mine who works as a DOD contractor at the Air Force base. We work for the same company, boosting his income 44% If they don't do that then I will just finish out my 36 months in Virginia. Those prices are crazy insane.

In Nunavut, yukon and territories, the government gives millions of dollars to grocery stores to offset the cost of shipping, however, there prices are ridiculous. As always rather than give money to corporations, they should have just given it to the people , they prolly would have done better that way. Canada has now put in a carbon tax, that will make food insecurity even worse. I pray that changes very soon. I don't know about how the government help the alaska for food, but feel the canadian government, should just absorb the shipping costs, and have the prices no different than the average place in the provinces. Thank you for sharing your experience. BTW, to me it does appear your prices are better than what I saw in the Canadian north.

Bro if you like sparkling water get a sodastream they're goated for making a bunch of your own. Could buy a machine for the price of 4 cases in the store, seems like a no-brainer.

Love your videos. You rely on motors for transportation so how much does the fuel cost? And how do the people in the town make the money to pay for the essentials? Is it partially from the the oil drilling dividend’s, but that can’t be enough considering how much the groceries cost.

Thanks! Gas price is about $6.50 a gallon. There are a few jobs at the school, stores, clinic, post office and at the City and IRA. Majority of the families receive government assistance for food. We call it food stamp but when I was in Idaho last year everyone called it EBT.

I backed up to see the price of a 6 pack of Klondike bars 😮 Imagine someone moving up there and running to the store to get some stuff for dinner. Them chili dogs and Doritos gonna be more expensive than the move. Though now I have a hankering for some fried taters with onion.

I was watching another video the other day of someone that went to you neighbors in Savoonga and in that video the locals said they get most of their food from hunting and fishing. I was just curious what percentage of your towns food is hunted or foraged for? Your island looks absolutely beautiful by the way, seems like an awesome place to live.

There isn’t a lot of job opportunities here unfortunately. So most families receive government subsidies to help afford these groceries. But the majority of our foods come from what we hunt, fish and gather!

@WallaceUngwiluk God bless you as you find ways to meet your needs and those of your family. Living off of the land has a positive side in that you are eating healthier foods and avoiding so many processed food. Thank you for sharing this interesting clip. CRAZY prices. Are the work wages good there?
@WallaceUngwiluk
@WallaceUngwiluk Ай бұрын
I wouldn’t say so. There isn’t many job opportunities out here so the majority of the working class age group is unemployed. And a lot of people that are working are making minimum wage which is around $14-$17 depending on where you work.

Reasons for living or staying here might differ for everyone. Majority of the locals are those that were born and raised here. Living off the land and sea like those that came before us. Not many people move out because of the culture shock of moving to a big city.
