Up until 2020, the only grocery store in Trenton, NC looked similar to the first store. It was a decent (typical) store back in the 50s - 80s, but it became run down and the original owner’s son really let it go before selling it to an Indian (from India) family..that’s when it really took a dive. It became a beer and cigarettes store for the locals. Some of the prices at the nice store weren’t too bad. Water $10 per gallon is ridiculous! Highway robbery.

So the company that I've been employed by, for 35 years recently just asked me if I would like to finish out the rest of my 3. Year term in Alaska. At the end of my 36 month. I am being forced to retire With a full pension Plus Other Cash benefits. They said that all travel expenses are paid and they will provide a nice home for me to live in while I'm there working. After I reach retirement, I'll have full options to purchase the home from the company at a discount price. After looking at these prices and assuming that everything else is higher as well. My thinking is that they are gonna have to raise my income and my retirement package to at least 35%. After speaking with a friend of mine who works as a DOD contractor at the Air Force base. We work for the same company, boosting his income 44% If they don't do that then I will just finish out my 36 months in Virginia. Those prices are crazy insane.

In Nunavut, yukon and territories, the government gives millions of dollars to grocery stores to offset the cost of shipping, however, there prices are ridiculous. As always rather than give money to corporations, they should have just given it to the people , they prolly would have done better that way. Canada has now put in a carbon tax, that will make food insecurity even worse. I pray that changes very soon. I don't know about how the government help the alaska for food, but feel the canadian government, should just absorb the shipping costs, and have the prices no different than the average place in the provinces. Thank you for sharing your experience. BTW, to me it does appear your prices are better than what I saw in the Canadian north.

what does your diet consist of living so remote? id imagine if someone was going by a strict diet it would be hard due to supply chain issues.

A big majority of our diet comes from things that we hunt, fish and gather!

CRAZY prices. Are the work wages good there?
@WallaceUngwilukАй бұрын
I wouldn’t say so. There isn’t many job opportunities out here so the majority of the working class age group is unemployed. And a lot of people that are working are making minimum wage which is around $14-$17 depending on where you work.

Get a water filtration system and a UV light, along with 8mil plastic bags, and start bagging up 1 gal of water and wholesale at $3-4 to the stores.

Not a lot of options for food, expensive prices.. what are the pros of living there?
@WallaceUngwiluk19 күн бұрын
Reasons for living or staying here might differ for everyone. Majority of the locals are those that were born and raised here. Living off the land and sea like those that came before us. Not many people move out because of the culture shock of moving to a big city.
