I need a lot of space because I'm such a terrible writer. My handwriting is terrible and I cannot write small. I always marble at you young ladies. They can write so eloquently and so tiny and it's legible. I just adore that y'all can write as beautifully as you do. So I can understand what you're saying at the A5 feels big butI don't know maybe adding something different to it or maybe any more details I don't know, but I suffer from the opposite.

Maybe try to draw a line down the center of the notes pages and then use every half like it's own page. I think that makes quite a big visual impact and format wise it'll feel similar to the weeks size

Yes, that's a very good idea! I will have to try that out when I get a chance to have a play. At the moment the chaos of Christmas is making it far too difficult to sit down with my planners and think it through but in the new year I'll have some time for it again :) x

I'm using an N1 planner (TN Standard size) this year and upgrading to an A5 for next year. Although I am using the pages in the back as one page per day for journaling/memory keeping so I'm not worried about finding a use for them. But I am curious to see what having all of that extra space is going to look like. I'm pretty sure my handwriting is just going to get much bigger haha.
@IllustriousShadowPlans5 күн бұрын
I am pretty good at keeping within the boxes but I can see I might be tempted to go bigger with the handwriting and then it ends up an incredibly ugly mess! (Though that doesn't matter really, does it? As long as it's functional I guess!). On the one hand it'll be nice not to have to spread layouts over multiple pages like my book covers one from last year, on the other hand it's very daunting! x

The funny thing is I’m an A5 user and I’ve never been able to figure out how to go to a weeks size. You just did it for me- my spreads need to be on 2 pages instead of 1! LOL! I really enjoy having some white space around my planner. It gives so much freedom to just “do whatever”. I feel it’s calming to have some negative space visually. I know it’s a trend to have all the information packed in but it is nice on a daily basis to have some breathing room on the pages. I would try it. You can always go back.
@IllustriousShadowPlans5 күн бұрын
Ah glad I helped :) Yes, you are right - I think I do fall into the trap of needing to fill the blank space rather than letting the information 'breathe' as you say. Perhaps that will be an interesting experiment in 2025 for me - letting go of the need to cram everything in and submit to the beauty of an emptier page :) x

I would say don’t worry about it too much. It’s totally okay to have blank space. I’m moving from an A6 to an A5 and my plan for the daily pages is to basically use them for commonplacing, gratitude, and a “ta da list” (tasks completed instead of a to do list which will be on my weekly pages). The nice thing about sizing up is that it gives you more space to experiment. Try tracking your meals for a week, if it doesn’t work you can try something else. No big deal, it’s your space and you are the boss of it. 😊
@IllustriousShadowPlans5 күн бұрын
Oh I like the idea of a 'Ta Da' list! I think that would be very motivating for me. I need to figure out what spreads I actually want as well I guess, which your comment has reminded me of - I'm likely panicking (figuratively) about something that may not even be an issue. I'm excited now to get stuck in! x

I'm quite clear that on this channel that my style is decorative memory keeping, not writing appointments in a diary and keeping up with them. There's nothing wrong with either style I think, but for me I really value the creative side of journalling that I do. My diaries and journals are long term projects that I refer back to years later and enjoy flipping through. I suppose planning is probably the rub here - it's commonly known as 'the planner community' when talking about this style of memory keeping. Journalling would probably have fit better and perhaps a rename of the video would be more appropriate :) Appreciate the comment though, thanks for taking the time to watch and let me know your thoughts! x

In my diary it’s a single page with 2024 at the top and a blank page opposite because there’s only one leap year in this diary time but in cycles with two (like a 2024 - 2029) there pages are split I think. I used mine to write a longer entry about my little boy as it’s near his birthday and then I’ve stuck in a photo of him every year so far, and will do every year when I get to the 1st March with a little update on what he’s doing :)

I did my first commonplace book without knowing it has a name. I did it because I read a lot, listen to audiobooks, and listen to podcasts, and when I was still working my co-workers or friends asked where I had read or heard that information, and I couldn't find that information again. I follow quite many podcasts (Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson and many others) and I couldn't remember who said and what. So, I began to make few notes about podcasts (date, Spotify or KZbin, Pinterest, book's name, etc.). I make notes about things I am interested or maybe something brief mention what is the origin of the word or thing. I keep my commonplace book in English if I find the information in English, Swedish if the information is written in Swedish, or my own language Finnish. I think so I can keep the information correct, because I could make a translation error. Now i am retired so I have all the time in this world to make them more interesting, add pictures, lyrics, poems etc. Thank you very much, I learned a lot from you!

@@IllustriousShadowPlans Just to give some information on these two: Sterling Ink has notebooks with page numbers in almost every size, including but not limited to A5, B5, TN regular and passport, Weeks size, B6, B6 Slim, pocket… I feel like I’m missing some. The common planner comes in a most sizes (I think the only one I mentioned above that it doesn’t come in right now is B6 slim) and is Hobonichi style - with months pre-planned, weeks (both vertical and horizontal for most sizes) all in the beginning and you can either purchase a half year (272 pages) or a full year (520 pages). There’s some extra stuff in the beginning (quarterly trackers and such). She also came out with a compact this past year, which has 272 pages but a full year of monthlies and weeklies. The paper is 52gsm tomoe river paper (like Hobonichi) and the covers are PU leather (for most, if not all). The grid size changes a bit depending on the notebook size, I’ve seen 3.6mm x 3.9mm, 3.9mm x 3.9mm, and 4mm x 3.9mm. The Weeks is slightly smaller, if I remember but when you’re talking 3.5 or 3.9mm the difference is very slight. Papertess Designs has their planner that comes in B6 and A5. This one is a horizontal layout, where the weeklies and blank daily pages are interspersed in the monthlies, so you get a monthly spread, two blank pages, a weekly, and seven blank pages, the next weekly, seven blank pages, so on. She also has a weeks size (I believe) planner that I know far less about because I’ve never been interested in it but it’s got a horizontal layout on one side and some task lists and a scheduler on the other. It’s an interesting and unique layout, I just personally have no use for as much as is shown. It’s also tomoe river 52gsm paper and I believe she keeps her grid at a 4x4mm grid. I’ve also heard people describe the font she uses as “romantic” - I don’t know what that means in font, but I do find I prefer the font on Papertess Design planners much more when I see it. And the covers for her notebooks/planners are actual heaven to touch. They’re soft and very slightly textured and so squishy. While Sterling ink’s notebooks are my personal favorite, Papertess designs covers win hands down. This was pretty long but I wanted to help give you a brief intro to them, since they could be planners you’d prefer and were previously mentioned as an option.
@myriaml37145 ай бұрын
If I can add something : Papertess designs also has a standard TN size notebook. That is bigger than the hobo weeks. The layout is 1 horizontal week followed by 7 blank grid pages and so on. The months are bulked at the beginning of the book

Would a non-indexed commonplace book like yours be similar to floralegium, or do you think there are significant differences?
@IllustriousShadowPlans5 ай бұрын
Interesting point! I think in my mind the largest difference would be that in a floralegium the text is directly related to the illustrations, and is more encyclopaedic in nature, cataloguing for long term preservation rather than for fun like I do. I do think you're right in that a non-indexed commonplace book probably does need a more specific name as it straddles the two concepts! x

I love your commonplace book. Making it pretty like that would make you want to go back and read it again, which is also the point of them. I've been keeping one for years and found that I didn't like the book format (I never had any index). I now use index cards and keep them in photo boxes. That way, it's easier for me to find the things I want. Recipes for example. Rather than hunting through several books, I can just go to the right section in the cards.
