I have a JD D130 riding mower. During a recent carb cleaning to open jets, I discovered the intake was warped where in attaches to the carb. This quite possibly is allowing unfiltered air directly into the carb. Poor design and/or material choice JD!

My sister has a riding mower that has a flat tire every time she wants to use it. She thinks you can just repair the tire. If I can see a nail or something in it, I suppose I can put a patch on it, but I have no idea why it keeps going flat. I do know that you Do Not want to put Fix a Flat in it.

Cub is a better value; I had an LTX1042KW for lots of years (still in use with a friend, who has a smaller yard than mine)... when I went to a zero turn, looked at all of em, ended up buying a Bad Boy Magnum (around $4000) which seems sturdier than these

The D series mowers may be the same. But most box stores don't sell those. Most box stores sell the L series mowers which are not made by John Deer they are infact made for John Deer by MTD the same company that makes Cub Cadet and other models.

My mother has the better model x530. The hood is cracked, the cow is cracked, the engine blew at a little over 300 hours and JD dealer serviced it every year. The ignition is not working right, the transaxle fluid tank cracked. Its a piece of junk and the roughest riding mower ive ever been on. Oh and of course the yellow seat is cracked really bad like they all do.

Have you used a test light or multimeter to see if the harness is getting power at the connector end that goes to the fuel shut off switch. It should have constant power when the key is turn to the "on" position. (What happens to me frequently is that the harness connection end will be burned or messed up not letting good contact to the fuel shut off switch even though the harness does have power)

And before I quit rambling here I would like to Austin point out one of the major fucking scams of the past 20 years or more in the lawn mower business has been commercial grade. So a lot of people are brand conscious and some of this comes out of the contractors the landscapers but it bleeds over into the public and the general population they what meet a guy who does landscaping and he's decked out and Scag equipment. So when they go to buy any of this stuff for their own personal use word of mouth that they're aware of says the skag is super awesome for example so they immediately run down to the Scag dealer and then they're immediately floored and disappointed because of the price and a lot of these people unfortunately still decide to buy the equipment a train and I shows up like myself and looks at it and says well yeah it's good for what it is by basically they just slapped the title of commercial grade on it to try and sell it to a home gamer to make the home game or think that they're getting something that's super awesome yeah it's true this particular model contractors do use or prefer but they too are basically getting scammed. So long long time ago say back in 70s before my time there was commercial grade mowers of the zero turn variety of which were walking yazoo was one of the most known and reputable. A lot of cities and graveyards Parks departments etc used to use those and they were built like fucking text but of course that was the 1970s and even fairly into the early 80s everything was built like attack it's what America did over time even those companies basically were forced cheap and shit up and then some of those companies from that era in time got swallowed up by other companies and then the brands have become bastardized. But what happens is the reputation still carries over from the good old days and so the next generation of contractors end up buying these things and then they wonder why they're always in fucking repair shop that basically it turns out in a lot of cases you could have went to Lowe's or home Depot and paid 30% less for what they're offering was and you could have gotten literally the same performance out of it this is something that the dealership cannot shake because it turns out the dealerships are not the only game Town anymore. Now I'm not trying to pick on Scag brand I nearly using that as an example Scag actually has pretty good stuff but I've also seen some fuck ups this guy has done to where at one point I did curse their name. Basically it's the same trick that all the hardware stores big and small pull with power tools like drills and saws, you know if you want commercial grade you got to get Milwaukee or DeWalt you know that's the big dick wagon it's basically bullshit. Yeah a lot of that could be aimed towards contractors but in reality they're trying to get the home game to believe that they are getting something that the professionals use the truth of it is no matter what the fuck you purchasing the professional most likely has that so even if you went to go by the smaller drill of 12 volts chances are a contractor has that they only use it for certain jobs you don't need to use a big ass honking DeWalt to put hinges on cabinet doors. But it's marketing because I can also say that if you crack the case is open on the majority of the drills and other assorted power tools that's on the market the armatures that you will find in there is still literally the same chinese-made shit as all the other brands that's available all the components are coming pretty much out of time it really doesn't matter which one you purchase so basically the entire market is being duped by marketing wank. That's basically the same difference when it comes to the lawn mowers yeah I get it the run of the mill low end model at Lowe's or home Depot right it's not going to be as good as say two or three bottles up above but here's the problem if the two or three models of base model is also sold the dealership as well as the discounter at that point it's literally the same model they're not doing anything different to ship it to Bob's dealership than they are to ship it to your list the difference is simply Bob was a sucker enough to pay thousands of dollars a year to have the signage all over his building.

I would have to say warranty words a threat of a lot of warranty work is why a lot of what are shops have converted from being a dealership into just being a lawn mower shop that specializes in repairs as well as used equipment. The amount of money it takes to basically be a franchise in many respects is not worth the return you're going to get the business has been declining since the early to mid 2000s I know that because I was there at the first time slot of the decline. I remember in 2001 through 2002 the hottest selling lawn mower the John Deere offered it was the lowest model of the time and it was called the sabor we could not keep this fucking things in stock we sold every one of basically at that time our sales was surpassing that of the local Lowe's or home Depot. But of course John Deere screwed the dealers they took note of that and then next thing now you could go to fucking Lowe's or home Depot and purchase a John Deere sabor. So then basically we were forced to turn this pick it off while they're carrying those which sucks because the demand was actually still there I think that what that was about was a lot of shop owners was rebelling and was refusing to carry a lot of products and hopes to jolt the company into coming back to catering to that right what happened was is everybody did their little boy caught of what they were going to carry what they weren't going to carry John Deere didn't give a fuck because they knew they could sell every one of them through the other retailer they really didn't need the dealer to sell the cheaper model anymore. The step up from the saber was the John Deere 110 I remember it actually kind of took the place of the saber at least dealership level and we did fairly well with them but I can say that they didn't fly out the door and the same volume that the sabor did of course the market was changing back then people were starting to get away from the traditional riding lawn mower and or riding tractor and zero turns were all the rave. I can remember in zero turns yes we carried one of the lower models if not the lowest model of Toro and I believe we had from the lowest we had like three other models above it available and they sold fairly well but not really as well as some of the offerings from John Deere or bobcat. Problem with the John Deere is they're generally always going to be the higher price so if you go to a dealership that happens to carry John Deere but they also carry other brands which I can say John Deere does not particularly care for that because it basically does demonstrate to the customer that John Deere is the highest price so then you have to sell them more so high price than you do the machine because back then especially most of these people were down there to buy these products because their neighbor had bought these products and they were all about trying to one up the neighbor. Yeah I mean I was 16 at the time when I started working for them here I was selling the 17 and 25,000 fucking zero turns and by the way I got no commission I got a lousy $6 an hour and I had to work 6 days a week needles to say I left that industry as quickly as I got started. That's basically another reason why the shops are having a part of the trouble they're having is simply they did not make the proper managers to keep staff around it was actually knowledgeable about the product that could actually deal with customers in a good manner there was no incentive the only incentive that I was able to get out of that was by building experience and then of course I just myself got a rush from making the sale. But I will say I was also loud about how i make lots of money for the business but I'm hardly given peanuts. So yeah I remember that you would get especially these people coming in there that lived City and you know their yard is not even half an acre whereas their neighbor may have had an acre lot possibly a two acre lot so the neighbor is this gigantic zero turn and their neighbor sees this and says well hell I want one the same size or bigger the problem is pretty hard is not going to deal with this so basically I had to explain to them that I will sell it to you if you really truly want but I myself don't particularly care to take your money for a product you really do not need you can still get a zero turn that you should consider a smaller one and then I would introduce them to the features of that model. I mean it was a great it was probably the last gasp high volume sales and seemingly a small business cuz they're kind of considered small businesses but at the same time if you work there and you know the behind the scenes they're not exactly the small business like everybody wants to believe everybody has this sympathetic soft spot for small businesses what the public doesn't realize it's most of the time there's businesses that they may be small or they look small they actually have a hell of a cash flow they're not exactly poor. I mean it's like this if you can afford to be a John Deere dealership then I'm sorry you're not poor by any stretch of the imagination if you are going bro meaning your business is going broke then at some point you will go under and then you can claim that you're poor. But I've seen numerous situations where the mentality of the lawn mower shop owners better in the dealership business basically they walk around with the mentality that everyone should have no less than $250,000 cash available at any given time I mean some of these people literally live out space but they have that mentality because they've always been able to enjoy that they don't seem to realize that it's not the reality for most people.

The sad but true situation is simply dealerships are disappear at least to a degree you have some that are starting up with alternative brands too things like John Deere but I've also noticed that a lot of those dealerships tend to carry bigger more expensive products they don't bother with even a lot of the mid-grade stuff why would you when the department store sells that what's the point of view caring you need to focus on more specialized products so that's what a lot of them are doing problem is that means that they run a higher cost and profit margins aren't exactly the best they're not broke don't let the bullshit you but the problem is is that bigger tractor or zero turn it may take it 6 months to turn over versus Lowe's and home Depot may have a turnover on most of their offerings it's hardly three weeks. Of course the shop makes most it's bread and butter via repairs the problem with repair side of it when you're a dealership is you can eat a fair amount of those repairs if not careful especially the warranty claims a lot of companies and John Deere was never above it they would assume to just fix it and then worry about reimbursement later day two adopted somewhat of the big box retail concept of 10% across the board shove the customer out the door problem is a lot of the times they would delayed payments to the shop that did the warranty work the problem with doing that is while they were doing the warranty work they missed out on a potential for say one to four other jobs that they could have easily cleaned up on dealing directly with customers. And of course it's not just warranty work for the models that you sell out of your store no no when you're a dealership you are forced to repair any of those models under warranty no matter where they purchased it from. So the repair side of the business is definitely lucrative and or it has more than potential to be problem is if you get a high volume of warranty work during particularly the busy she said where you're having to shove off customers requests because you're forced to prioritize warranty claims over the average person coming in for repair then you're sitting on your ass waiting 2 to 3 weeks for payment of those jobs it creates a cash flow problem. Basically the minute they warranty claim is made known to the bigger company of John Deere for example then that warranty claim that repair job is basically on time they may not have a specific time it needs to be completed by but basically you are under a certain amount of urgency to get that work done so it does create the situation to where you know the guy who comes in who needs a basic tune up what he might have to wait in an extra day to possibly an extra week the only break that you will get from warranty work during warranty work is when you're waiting on parts then you're allowed to put this jobs on hold. But of course you have to pay for the parts up front if you do not have them stopped so there again that drains your cash flow you have to put out all the money necessary to complete the warranty work before you ever will get reimbursed it's 100% your shops invest and that is the fucking contract that you had signed. Now I say this based on my knowledge from definitely over 20 years ago but I'm sure not much has changed there may be a few variations out there but for the most part now you shit out the parts you shit out the labor and then you have to go through a process to get reimbursed and that process with some companies can be just as bad as trying to get a fucking rebait on a product that you buy at the store.

Well I can remember when I worked for a John Deere dealership and that was back in or 01 through 2004. That was at the time that John Deere started to go to the big box retailers and throw some of their products in there oh and I can remember the dealers how to fit rightly so. Basically at the time they promised that they were only going to allow the big box retailers to carry so many mob they were going to have a low-end payment grade and then not exactly a high end but something that was definitely above the mid-grade that was offered in that store. Wow for a while they somewhat held to that but then over time they've changed a lot of things now the one thing that I can say about buying a John Deere at Lowe's Depot is simply those mowers are not assembled by store staff in fact store staff is not allowed to touch this butters that has to be done by a John Deere technician that comes down and assemble those. I know that because I have worked at Lowe's and home Depot. Of course I would not assemble my receiving the ones we were allowed to assemble simply because well I actually know what the fuck I'm doing and they don't pay me enough to do it so full when they found out that I had the background to do that I said nothing doing unless you're going to give me money. Of course John Deere also wanted to fuck dealerships in other ways. Admittedly the shop that I used to work for they could have brightened up the showroom they definitely would have benefited a few more lights from the ceiling especially in our work area but for the most part they didn't have too bad upset but John Deere being the company they are they decided that everybody needs to stop hundreds of thousands of dollars into a building and make it look all super great just so they can most likely come back in a few years and say that you need to do it again. So the family I had worked for basically said we're not doing that they let it slide for a while but eventually John Deere pulled the dealership from there for basically not comply with bringing the shop and/or showroom up to their supposed to standards. Yeah I understand that John Deere went around just did that to a lot of dealerships I mean I'm not saying that there could have been improvements because I think that their kid is bad but I will say that I'm not a big fan of some ass wipe coming in and telling you basically what to do with your building especially if you are still making decent sales and you're doing it consistently and thus you're able to order the product I mean who really gives a shit it's a fucking mower. I will say that there was a case of a John Deere dealership being a complete asshole in Colorado back in 2005. I had traveled out to visit a customer find hours of people do needed I believe it was a throttle cable I first went down to the John Deere dealership to get a throttle cable they would not sell me one because it was not a John Deere boat and I'm like this is practical joke right no they were dead serious they were not going to sell me one fucking single part unless I could produce a John Deere piece of equipment. So I had to drive down to the Toro dealer and they sold me anything and everything I wanted.
