The Australian fauna protection laws allow this to happen. Yes, people are irresponsible and you should not dump your unwanted pets into our delicate ecosystem. But not allowing native fauna as pets has created the destruction of habitat by wild and domestic cats and dogs. Starting the trade in native animals as pets will also create new jobs as their food is highly specialised. Just image cow filled paddocks replaced by forests of eucalyptus to feed koalas, termite farms to feed numbats, invertebrates and worm farms for quals and possums. Not all native animals are suitable for the pet trade. We need to do more to conserve and repair what we have. These cichlids are just one of the species causing havoc, what about trout, red fin and carp. I keep fish and want to be more oriented toward natives. The tank is only small and am restricted to empire gudgeons and pacific blue eyes although these are really hard to get in Sydney as are native plants. I’m in the process of setting up a larger tank which will accommodate rainbows, thank goodness for people like Dave Wilson from Aquagreen.

I wonder how many invasive species come from ponds that have been caught in floods, it is so disheartening to know that irresponsible owners are the reason we now have these in in our environment
@australianbiotopes4563
@australianbiotopes4563 18 күн бұрын
Some things have the potential of getting away in floods mainly small floods that would overflow into drains, the larger floods like we had in Brisbane would of killed a lot off from all the contamination of all the chemicals oils ext. I was delivering plumbing gear after the floods in Brisbane and the stench of oil and dead fish was everywhere, there were dead fish in the streets like large carp and mullet, the other problem is people just with a lack of knowledge, most don't know it's wrong to release what they don't want or even think it's better then killing it off or taking it back to a pet store, that is why I make these videos to let people know, our local fish group ANGFA has also done up signs for aquarium stores to put up letting people know of the dangers, most have done the right thing.

Yeah it's shocking where you can find feral fish up that way and sometimes makes you wonder how they got there, unfortunately the warmer weather and floods makes for a perfect place for them to spread much easier, people in the tropics have to much more careful or those beautiful places will be ruined, I've come across some scary stuff while filming, it makes me angry some times, hopefully it doesn't get out of hand.

@@patrickmcmanus5373 Yeah we got them down here to in the local man made lakes and they have reverted back to their wild colours, nice fish but they don't belong. Just be careful using the Tilapia, if you get caught with it in your possession dead or alive there are big fines, Stupid law as you can buy the flesh now in seafood shops but it's imported of course so the money goes back overseas rather then fixing a problem here. Tilapia actually has a really nice flesh and is farmed all over the world and if you ever have imported fish fingers you are probably already eating it, this country needs to get with the times and maybe try and fix a problem at the same time make some money in the process, we are never going to be rid of them now, they are in just about every waterway this side of the Great Dividing Range and in WA. they should just let people catch and keep if they want to, dead of coarse for food, most will even release them back because they are a no keep fish, I've even spoken to Bio Security about it and it's like talking to a brick wall they are set in their ways with no good outcome.

I so enjoyed my visits there - the first one in July a few years ago was perfect, pristine water, I couldn't get over the clarity of the turquoise water with plants growing far below, quite happily, due to the clarity of the water. I spent many peaceful hours floating downstream on my noodle, loving the scenery. The next time was later in the year the following year,, around September - everything looked frayed and covered in algae - a bit more like what was shown here in places. However, so great to get this underwater look at a very special place, thank you so much!
