the design of that engine dates back to the thirties when it was first used in diesel locomotives old but uncomplicated and extremely reliable.

Cool video! Cleanest engine room I've ever seen. The EMDs are great engines. LOL what's with the siren at 2:58? Is that to warn everyone around you and outside of the boat that the engine is starting?
@epicfred
@epicfred 2 ай бұрын
@@GearheadExplorer85 that was the general alarm. It went off because I shut off the shore power in order to put the generator online. Everyone would have heard it, it’s not a very big boat.

The M104 is a fairly large displacement engine. In a stripped out tiny car, it should have enough grunt to roll out without stalling, shouldnt it? Swirling the manual gearshift lever is called "stirring the pot". I was always told not to do that.
@epicfred
@epicfred 3 ай бұрын
@@mudpuddle8805 it’s a bad habit from a lifetime of driving crappy trucks. Right now I don’t have a proper tune on the engine so it doesn’t idle up with load, on top of that my throttle cable is recycled trash and tends to stick in the closed of full open positions. I will be working on these issues as time allows.

Why were you putting it in neutral to coast?
@that_escalated_quickly2720
@that_escalated_quickly2720 3 ай бұрын
Depending on the terrain you loose more speed with engine braking and therefore need to accelerate again, wasting more fuel than when idling while coasting in neutral
@whos-your-mate
@whos-your-mate 3 ай бұрын
@@that_escalated_quickly2720 But in neutral you have less control of the vehicle. Most if us in the UK drive manual cars, I've been doing it for 25 years, never seen anybody coast in neutral for any logical reason. I wondering if he was listening for something 🤔
@that_escalated_quickly2720
@that_escalated_quickly2720 3 ай бұрын
@@whos-your-mate you have no control of acceleration... I live in germany, have learned on and driven a manual all my life as well... On a dry road without much traffic there is little risk of anything going wrong with this... I personally don't cruise in neutral too, I'm just not liking it, but I know plenty of people who do... I would only do it with a fully synchronized transmission though, because matching the engine rpm back up at autobahn speeds with a unsynchronized 5th or 6 gear is not nice for the gear teeth and shift forks
@epicfred
@epicfred 3 ай бұрын
I was in neutral because I dont have a proper tune on the engine so it dies randomly and becaue my throttle cable is a recycled piece of trash and sticks either wide open or closed. That is why it was so hard for me to feather the gas to get the thing going. It's on the list of things to fix.

Epic Fred do you have videos of how to change oil in the EMD engine?
@epicfred
@epicfred 6 ай бұрын
I don’t have a video, but for big engines like that you just pump the old oil out of the sump and pump new oil into it. Usually the same oil transfer pump is used for both operations.

Dude. Thats one of those domino effect catastrophes like the El Faro or Deepwater Horizon. It started with a bunch of small things like dead or dying batteries on the e-gen, emergency steering not being tested, not properly going through the departure checks, not having a second generator online when transiting congested water ways, etc, etc. One domino fell and the rest followed, ending with a bridge. Im patiently waiting for the NTSB report.
