The last Japanese soldier surrendered in 1972. He was living in the Philippines and did not know the war was over. It took the presence of his commanding officer for him to surrender. Other Japanese soldiers continued to fight into 1949 on various islands.

Pelelieu is the battle that never should have happened. The military had planned to take the island the previous year. General MacArthur insisted he needed Pelelieu as a staging area plus he needed his right flank covered for his invasion of the Philippines. As time came for the attack, Admiral William Halsey suggested that they bypass Pelelieu since his carriers operating near the island noted very little air activity. He was overruled by Admiral Nimitz, MacArthur, and Admiral King. The attack on Pelelieu started September 15 and ended November 27. MacArthur stepped foot on the Philippines on October 25. Very few functioning Japanese aircraft were found on the island and MacArthur had used the island of Ulithi for his staging area. Pelelieu was a waste of human beings and a waste of time. Time that could have been used to step up the invasion of Iwo Jima before the Japanese could turn it into a fortress.😮

If we had skipped Pelelieu as Admiral Halsey suggested and as it turned out was unnecessary, and attacked Iwo Jima before the Japanese had a chance to fortify it we would have had no casualties on Pelelieu and much fewer casualties on Iwo Jima. Pelelieu was not used as a staging area and Japanese air power on the island posed no threat to MacArthur's invasion of the Philippines.

Very important also to remember that Japan was a very bad country at this time. They committed a holocaust across Asia, nearly 31 million people. The Marines stepped in, and saw how ferocious they were. On Peleliu, there were 14,000 Japanese soldiers, and hundreds of Korean slaves forced into labor. The U.S only managed to take 7-10 soldier prisoners. Most did suicide charges, or ended it themselves in the caves. The Japanese army also killed all the slaves on the island. The lucky ones that escaped turned into the Americans, distraught and starved nearly to death. They viewed death as honorable. They were vicious and would torture captured Americans.

Re: targeting medics: yes that’s true, as the one who told Doss “N*ps put a premium on shooting medics.” It’s considered a war crime or against rules of engagement (sorry I don’t know the proper term) - but the Japanese military of the time didn’t care. It’s also against the rules to wave a white flag as if they’re surrendering-and then flinging grenades at their enemy. But yeah they’re more effective if nobody is alive to help the wounded.

While training everyone else got Sundays off; Doss worked on Sunday. Wanting the Sabbath off was asking for equal treatment… it’s just nobody SAW him working on Sunday bc they were off. It didn’t need to be the big deal they treated it as

I found this out. It's actually a myth that the tanks on the flame stores would explode. It would have to be ignited by a tracer type round at that point, and the japanese didn't have those really.
