I have an affinity for old radios and electronics but especially for amateur radio and cb radio equipment. I have reached the point though that I have already bought too many items that are just to be looked at. For me if something doesn't serve a function there is no reason to keep it. I think that a lot of the fun in ham and CB radio is the collection of equipment and the construction of the perfect radio station. I like to sit at my radio station with either a cup of coffee or a cold soda and scan the bands. Its amazing the level of communication that is going on.

Most of the hobby is driven by "want" not "need". I'm sure a lot of the bits and pieces that make up your station could easily be done away with. Personally I enjoy operating with an amp as part of my station so no justification other than that is required..

I just acquired a mk 0 101zd on Fee Pay (probably spent too much also, going by your estimates) the problem I'm having with it now is the digital display doesn't light up ( the light for the vfo dial lights up, just not the digital part) could it be a bad display, vfo or what? Everything else seems to work, (makes noise, knobs seem to function, etc) but haven't tried tx yet, because of the display problem.

The Ameritron AL-811 is a good little amplifier. I use mine all the time and have been very happy with it. Also, there are a lot of modifications you can do with this amp which makes it a fun amp to work on. I've read some of the comments about the noise floors being high on the lower bands and having some extra watts making the difference (this is true). For myself, I enjoy using the AL-811 and having approx. 600 watts available is a nice feature to have!

Thank you very much. I only wish you had a silver coloured appliance instead so we can see your method better. Those pro power sprays have been around for a long time. Had no idea they made foam cleaner. My late brother used to use the contact cleaner spray to clean volume sliders, etc. thank you again, gonna try get me that foam cleaner.

A great review of a great little gizmo! I bought mine about 10 years ago, and my speed went from 5WPM to 20WPM in less than two months. I played with it every night trying to copy/translate off the air, and it's "touch and go" with that process... You really need a solid station to decode well enough. BUT (that's a big but) this also was part of my learning process! I set it 20WPM and left it there, only changing the SPACING. As I sent and copied, I learned the "SOUND" of each letter. As I improved over the course of that two months, I decreased the SPACING to 20WPM also! I could not have done this without this little gadget! It was indispensable. I don't use mine anymore because i don't need to, and haven't for years. But I still have it and will never sell it. I consider it a valued heirloom for what it has done for me!

I have an 8 million serial 940s whose 17 IF transformers lost capacity and I had to add capacitors behind all the transformers with 27pf to 220pf and success to make it work again. But I still can't fix the power drive TX signal which slowly continues to decrease to 50% since radio turning it on, which problem will disappear if I blow fresh air around on the 3rd TX mixer in the RF unit, has anyone experienced this? Please help me because I'm really almost giving up

I am thinking of an alternative to the spray foam used in the video that is available in the states would be Pro Honda spray cleaner and polish. You can get it from the Honda motorcycle dealer.
@hifissb9 ай бұрын
Wouldn't the polish take the decals off and scratch the perspex?
@chasiu759 ай бұрын
@@hifissb It is designed for the windscreen and plastic parts of the motorcycle. It does not damage decals or scratch. I use it on my helmet mostly.

too bad you weren't able to focus in on the R-820's front panel better, I would have liked to learn a little about its various function controls. Also would have liked to hear a tiny bit more from each station you tuned in. Would you buy another one of these receivers? What is your go-to receiver now for best selectivity, sensitivity, and notch filtering? Trying to figure out if one of these Kenwoods is a better way to go than a classic Hammarlund etc. for pulling intelligible signals out of the ether.
