Thank you, Michael. I do so miss the old Yonkers Public Library. I read every single fairy tale book there was in that building.

7:37 corner of elm and walnut - where i bought a few thousand comic books - starting with spiderman #37 at $0.12. i don't think that church is a church any longer. but at that time, every Sunday morning, it gave us a glimpse of "real Americans" that had long ago left the neighborhood - LOL.

01:49 holy craps, that's the barber shop that my father apprenticed me to and tried to make a barber out of me back the '60s (i sucked at it, and I just did my homework and shined shoes). the lumber yard across the street is where i scrounged discarded pieces of wood that the barber made into rubber stamps as a side business. the building next to the lumber yard was a funeral home. and next to the barber shop is a gas station (Gambardella i think is spelled). if you go straight ahead, on the left you'll pass a Chinese dry cleaner, then a stationary store where, at 13, i bought my first pack of "True" cigarettes, a few blocks down the street you'll merge into south Broadway. If the car parked in front of the barber shop is what i think it is, then this photo is from a few years before 1970. the owner of the barber shop drove a mid/late 50's model (the parked car). the daughter didn't want to be taught driving in that, so the Father upgraded to a 5- or 6-year-old, used '63 valiant.

What a sad state, decades of neglect turned what was once beautiful buildings into rundown shit. And if the outside didnt look bad enough, for sure the interiors have been hacked up into trashy apartments. What a shame

Cross County Shopping Center was one of the first, arguably the 1st mall in the country. Albeit an outdoor mall, this new concept was to have two or more big recognizable brand 'anchor' stores to draw in shoppers with a number of other smaller stores in between on a big expanse of property. John Wanamaker's and Gimbels were the two original anchors, both being full-service department stores staffed by courteous and knowledgable sales people. Service was king! There were two F.W. Woolworhts on the property, one on the actual mall promenade and another on the far side that had two floors and boasted a pet department and garden center. Also of interest is that Cross County claimed to have had one of the largest supermarkets (remember this is 1955) in the country on the site, First National Stores which later morphed into Finast Supermarkets. Additionally, on the outer perimeter of the property was a food pavilion called Adventurers (hot dogs, burgers, fries, shakes, etc.) with a kiddie amusement part behind called Wonderland. In the late 1950s my beloved Mom took me here as Metromedia TV Channel 5 kid's host Sandy Becker did a live show from the kiddie park. Cross County was an amazing place to shop. I have many pleasant memories of this iconic place over the years!

I was born and raised there too... Yonkers General Hospital on Nepperhan Av. in 1947. Schooled at Halsted School on North Broadway. What happened to younkers is: They started to build low income housing and lots of it in South Yonkers and indigent deadbeats from all over the country came to live there. I saw it happen.

Oh the popovers. Does this bring back memories. We lived in Yonkers just south of Tuckahoe Rd from 1951-1961 and this was my parents go to restaurant when they could afford it - usually their anniversary. Was there a couple of times but too young to really appreciate except the popovers. Only thing I liked better were the Chocolate cupcakes at the Horn and Hardart store at Cross County Mall!

Thank you for sharing Mike. These are great! They brought back beautiful memories. I grew up in yonkers and then in 1985 moved to Los Angeles at the age of 16. I love Los Angeles, but my home will always be Yonkers, New York. I went back and took my daughter and niece with me. My daughter fell in Love with New York and later went back to visit with friends. What ever happened to Landi's wedges? When i went back i looked for the place right before we went to the airpot, but to my dismay it was gone. They made the best sandwiches!

Michael - I have a picture of a church/chapel situated somewhere in North Yonkers in 1967. I've searched high and low, but have not been able to identify it. It's just the side view, and it could have been razed.

My only wish is that there was another photo of the former Loew's (Brandt's) Theater on South Broadway between Vark and Herriot Streets. The one at the 1:30 mark (with Louie's Italian Restaurant at the corner) gives you an idea of the size of the theatre but does not include the entrance and marquees.

Great video. Great to see the big crowds that this parade attracted years ago. That's the marquee of the Strand Theater at the 0:10 mark, the Proctor's Theater at the 0:30 second mark, and both at the 0:37 mark. I started marching in this parade in 1963 with the Ben Franklin Jr. HS Band. Thanks for posting.

Excellent video and details. I especially enjoyed the old photos of the parade route, especially the 1951 photo at the 0:38 mark that shows Loew's Theater on the right with both its regular and vertical marquees still in use and the 1956 photo at the 0:49 mark showing three billboards where the Allen Towers apartment building now stands. I would like to note one probable correction: the 1959 photo at the 0:56 mark is probably not of the Columbus Day Parade but of a special parade held earlier in the year to dedicate the beautiful 7th Ward War Memorial shown at this point and in several photos that followed. Thanks for posting these all these photos of Yonkers history.
