October 1 1989 My grandfather had a heart attack that same night and it took the ambulance 90 mins to arrive, needless to say he didn't survive. At the time we didn't know about the overturned bus but i suppose all those people with bumps and bruises are more important than a heart attack.😞

My family and I took the Radio Train from Dunloughrie to Killarney and then the horse drawn carriage to Muckross Abby. This was in 1970, and is still my favorite memory of our visit to Ireland.

Back in 1983 around when they came out loved the sound of the engine....had to wait 25 year and you tube to under stand what a detroit two stroke diesel engine was which powered these buses back then. 100 gallon fuel tanks only lasted half a day and the way they screamed was such a joy..

They even ran buses with the Cummins L10 and Voith, which meant they sounded like our Flxible Metros with said powertrain.

Dublin had an exellent tramway system....dismantled in 1949....cie formed....goverment cronies who owned privite bus companies got seats on the board.....trams ran on 600 volts dc....100 amps available....they were very powerful a fully loaded tram could pull another effortlessly.....the quality of coachbuilding was superb....spa road inchicore....needless to say all long since gone.....foundry too

Junk made by former sugar co workers not body builders....they suffered severe chassis cracking and the two stroke detroit diesel ate fuel....and fuel pumps gave problems too......the kds often ran out of fuel on the far out routes....my Dad often had to go out with fuel for them.... Of course it was political to buy them.......as I recall they tried to sell these heaps to countries in the Middle East....they didnt bite....

They've had this system for donkey's years in the U.S. and Canada, but the difference is one could transfer for free to another bus with their ticket, and pre-paid tickets and tokens were also used in the fare-box. Had this been in from the 1960's, OPO buses would have been in, but of course instead of one flat-fare Dublin Bus kept the stage-fare system which was stupid. If the proper DART system had been fully implemented this would not have happened this way, and there wouldn't be different providers for different modes of public transit in Dublin.

@@looneyirish007 I gathered that. Allison transmission I presume? In Australia we had small batches of Leyland B21 rear engine chassis version of the Leyland National with local body work go to a couple of operators and they had Deroit 6-71 two stroke with Allison auto. They were not very successful here due to heavy fuel consumption and were sold off early by one operator due to that. Detroit 2S engines were succesfully used in long distance coach work for many years however.
@looneyirish007
@looneyirish007 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfrench7299 KC1 was fitted with a supercharged 2-stroke Detroit Diesel 6V-71 engine and an Allison V730 automatic transmission. The axles were Rockwell/GKN axles and the general mechanical running gear was identical to the KD/KE type buses, although the gear ratios would me more like the KD citybus (slow moving traffic) than the KE InterCity coach (which was built for InterCity, high speed driving. in October 1983 and the most notable change from the KD bus was the fitting of a 4-stroke, turbocharged Cummins L10-185 engine and a Voith D851 gearbox, which was more economical to run unit, which parts were cheaper and easier tl access than its wholly American counterpart, and from an enthusiastic point of view, this bus has its own distinctive sound, compared to the loud roar from the Detroit 6V-71, which was an American engined, parts were expensive to obtain and the unit had very poor fuel economy being a 2-stroke diesel engine. The axles were also changed from Rockwell/GKN type axles to Kirkstall axles. The Dunlop "pneuride" suspension was retained and was the same type as the KD type, although the length of the KC bus was approximately 1 metre longer than the KD type. The Cummins engine in the KC was a much more "European" engine with parts easier to source than for the Detroit Diesel engine, parts for which had to be largely sourced from Dallas, Texas. With exception of KC1 and KC2, which were badged as "Bombardiers", the rest of the KC Citybuses were badged "GACs", as by the time KC3 onwards were on the production line, Bombardier had sold their stake and interest in the factory, with GAC taking sole control of the operation, which produced 201 KC type buses out of the Shannon plant

The good thing about people paying cash those on leap pass and other payment passes can see how much There saving when cash is gone the Bus Companies will up the fare prices public will be paying more What's so wrong with having choices as long you pay the fare in the 1970s you could pay your fare with unused Postal stamps if you had no cash on you i wonder did Dublin Bus stamp this payment out
