Good on you Martin - whenever I'm asked 'what is the best FOSS/Libre end user app?', without hesitation, I answer 'Inkscape'. Thanks to you and the rest of the Inkscape community for your efforts and success in making the Inkscape ecosystem so rich and robust!!

First of all: Thank you for your many contributions to Inkscape. I am using Inkscape to draw origami diagrams and I would like to hide the majority of line styles ( i.e. most of the dash patterns ) so that I can focus on the ones I use. The same is true with Fonts. It would be incredibly useful to have the top options in the dialogues for Fonts and/ or line styles be the ones that you have actually used in created objects, with a small divider to denote the end of those styles/ fonts that are most used. Another option would be a filter, so that the dialogues will only show whitelisted styles/ fonts, until you disable that filter again. Swatches for the styles in a palette would also work. The option with the last selected styles / font rising to the top of the drop-down list would be the most flexible I suppose.

Hopped on via Patreon, inkscape isn't a major part of our workflow, but it's a really important piece of F/OSS and your work specifically has been big.

Can we have snapping assistance while we shift the pivot of a rectangle? If i want to have the pivot exactly at the corner of a rectangle, the snapping assist can help me in that like it does with all other alignment assist.

This sounds like an interesting feature. Have you reported your idea to inkscape.org/report ? You can include screnshots / mockups to express which center you need to snap.

I hope to see something what i call parametric coloring. I mean - You can define color varialbele for instance color1=30303eff, then You can attach this variable to multiple objects like fills, storkes, gradient points. And if You will decide to change this variable You can do it via special color palette where You can see all color variables defined in particular document.
@doctormo

That's very close to how the swatches pallet works today. Minus the ability to use them in gradients. But this system should be possible in the future.

Ugh, the Inch... The Mars Probe was just Inches...Drats! Centimetres ... away from the surface. Hmm, why don't we get anymore data from it?...Ah, yes. Rant against Imperial and for SI units aside, using math in Inkscape transformation dialogues should be handy ❤.

Hmm I wish there was a 'select by the relative z-index' or 'select all in same layer id: "
@doctormo
@doctormo Күн бұрын
How would z-order selection work? I'd need to see the tree maths to understand I think. The same layer, I believe that already exists as "select all in layer"
@bmc_
@bmc_ Күн бұрын
@@doctormo No the > select all in all layers well, selects ALL in ALL layers- not a specific or current layer. Regarding the > select by z-index well ngl that'll be hard to implement. I forgot that each new object is always above the previous object that is present and only objects in group can be in the same 'z-index'. Hmm. Though, the idea was that if objects were to be in the same z-index, they would not be able to overlap each other and be able to 'conflict' with each other since they'll be on the same z-index, and such you can just select those object by their z-index. Well, yeah now that I type this all out, technically there's no point in having objects that conflict with each other. Though, the select all in a specific/ current layer should be implement.

I can't figure out how to do this with the transform tool :( (I'd like to create 3 clones each rotated 120°)
@doctormo
@doctormo Күн бұрын
For the transform tool, use the "duplicate and transform" action, Ctrl+Alt+D. You need to have done a transform already to your object and you need to be doing it to a clone so the duplicate is a duplicate of the clone and not the original. This will be an inkdrop in the future.

Just made a donation, keep up the great work. Inkscape is one of the best pieces of software, and the continuous improvements to this software really make a difference. I like your model of funding, it makes a lot of sense. The two things I look forward to are these: 1) The symmetrical node editing your mentioned last year in a video. For those not familiar, this is the issue: Imagine you have a rectangle. Make it into a path. Then you want to move the bottom left node a bit to the right. Ideally, you would have a way to make the bottom right node going to the left equally much so that you get a symmetrical cup shape in this case. I really wonder how other people deal with this. 2) In the "offset path effects", you can set the amount of offset. Inkscape always resets these units to "mm", even if you set the document preferences to "pixels". I suppose this is an oversight. Why can the "offset" not remember the units. This is really silly, because if you do a lot of similar offset effects on a number of shapes, you need to set this manually each time.
@doctormo
@doctormo 2 күн бұрын
Thanks for the notes. The Path Effect Offset appears to have a unit dropdown. Is this new to you?
@psytoolkit
@psytoolkit 2 күн бұрын
@@doctormo Yes. But imagine this: You have 20 different paths and each need their own offset. You work through all 20 one by one. Say, you want the offset for each path slightly different, but always in pixels. For each new path you apply a the Offset path effect to, you will need to select "px", because for this effect, it cannot remember that you always want to work with pixels. This is different from the general UI, where Inkscape remembers the preference for a specific unit.

@pi_ist_toll
@pi_ist_toll 3 күн бұрын
Very too little. But that's FOSS, in a certain way: many people just use free programs to do things. And that's not wrong. But most of those people never give back anything. What we need are sponsors that profit a lot from using free programs and that give money back. As we even see in the official inkscape sponsors list: no one is there. This needs to improve.

That's interesting to know. I thought this channel was the sort of "official Inkscape dev channel" which made it weird when you mentioned you were only one person working on Inkscape. Now I get the context of this channel, and it looks like you're doing a really good job updating the more obscure parts of Inkscape that need a lot of quality of life changes. Keep up the good work!

How would you describe the situation, now you understand it, that would make more sense to people? One of the struggles with trying something new is not having the language to explain things in understandable ways.
@thepuzzlemaster64
@thepuzzlemaster64 2 күн бұрын
@@doctormo Not really sure how you could put it. You're an Inkscape developer, but you're not part of the core Inkscape team. You're just indirectly working for them with your own goals. Kinda like a rogue agent, or a bounty-hunter of sorts. Though, I'm not sure if there's a more "conventional" name to describe what you're doing without sounding really edgy. That's all I've got
@doctormo
@doctormo 2 күн бұрын
@@thepuzzlemaster64 Interesting. I am a member of the inkscape core team though. I run team meetings, I review other people's code and more importantly I sit on the project leadership committee and vote on how the project is run. But the project doesn't have it's own functioning economic model (yet). And it's core is a charity which means it's not allowed to serve people's wants, only the public's needs. which is a bit of a head scratcher when you try and pay contractors to do work on the project to be honest.

@@doctormo So for some reason KZbin just deleted my comment. Not sure what I typed wrong to get the comment shadow-banned, but here's a brief version of what I typed before it got deleted: My apologies if I don't really know what your role is at the company. The one thing I keep getting stuck on is the financial side of things. Maybe a bit of elaboration on how donations work at Inkscape could help me understand a little more. Though, your role seems a bit unique from what I've gathered. Sorry if it feels like I'm bothering you so much over a simple misunderstanding.
@doctormo
@doctormo 9 сағат бұрын
@@thepuzzlemaster64 KZbin sometimes does that. Sorry about that. So, Inkscape isn't a company. That's part of what trips up communications is that there's an expectation that projects are these monolithic organisations. It's the name given to the "antonymous collective" to quote monty python. So my role is both self-created, and consensus maintained (other people allow me to continue to do the work). I get paid from users directly, because that's what I've set up for myself, at the same time the project doesn't have any employees, but still need things to happen. Though we're getting better at that.
