I've been daily driving 1.4 for some months now (lost track of how long exactly) and I have to say, it's well worth the upgrade. May not seem like the ground-breaking release that was 1.3 (in the eyes of some) because the feature diff is lower, but it's been a game changer for me. Performance is better overall, and the seemingly little things, such as gradient rotation support, smart alignment, etc - actually make a real impact on my workflow. Don't underestimate the impact of the smaller things.

Congrats on the release! It came just in time for me! I was moving something that I'm working on to Inkscape and had version 1.3.2 installed on my Mac. The experience wasn't all that great: some weird little UI bugs with color sliders moving on hover, dialogs that couldn't be closed etc. And no way to easily rotate gradient fills. It was pretty frustrating. But then I saw that version 1.4 was available. I installed it, and all problems were gone, and even gradients can be easily rotated now! Now it's really enjoyable to use and it does everything that I want it to do! I will keep using it for sure, keep up your great work!

A feature request, Rotating any svg drawing in 3d space. For example, if I draw a circle, feature for rotating it along xz, zy, planes because skewing it to get the desired shape is very difficult.
@berntlie67992 ай бұрын
I'm a amateur user of Inkscape, using it for technical drawings (incl. LaTeX text). To achieve consistency, it would be nice if I can make my own "swatch" where I can define labels for colors (e.g., liquid, gas, etc.) and select RGB/color values for the labels. The idea is that if I assign a color label to an object in a drawing, and later change the RGB value associated with the label, the color in the object will automatically be updated. Is this possible with Inkscape 1.4?
@doctormo2 ай бұрын
Yes, custom swatches have been possible for a while, but you have to save the gpl file in the config directory which is not very easy to use. We should improve the UX and then it will become obvious.

Open Affinity files? That is so cool! I dropped Illustrator a long time ago to use Affinity Designer partnered with Inkscape and the ability to open an AF file will be much appreciated. Question: will Inkscape respect the brush work in an Affinity file? I love using a brush with vector apps (and pressure sensitivity) and it would be a amazing if Inkscape respected pressure created data.

@@doctormo Hi Martin. I appreciate your quick response. I decided to try it a fourth time, but this time I closed down my Opera browser. It appears that whatever this GDPS.EXE was, must have been part of the Opera processes as it finally worked this time. It's opened just fine and successfully updated. @BahnNachrichtenEuropa2 ай бұрын
I don't know if it's been mentioned here, but if Inkscape and Blender were compatible with each other, that would be helpful and a real game changer. At work I often need to design something in Inkscape, save it as an SVG file and later import it into Blender to use it as a logos on a 3D models for example. The problem is that editing or changing vector graphics in Blender is really difficult, mainly because Blender doesn't have a real vector graphic editor. It would be nice, if it was possible to use Inkscape in some way to edit vector graphics directly in Blender, because it would combine the best programs from the 2D and 3D world.
@BahnNachrichtenEuropa2 ай бұрын
A possible workflow could be to design something in Inkscape, save it as an SVG file and use this SVG file as the source for the vector graphic in Blender. If you want to change the vector graphic later, you simply edit the SVG file and save it. At this point, the vector graphic is automatically updated in Blender.
@user-munm2 ай бұрын
@@BahnNachrichtenEuropa You could also make it so that when you want to edite a vector graphic in blender you can eihter use tab key to use benders internal basic vector editor, or you could right click an choose "edite externaly" to utilize Inkscapes vast capibilities.

@vmisev2 ай бұрын
@@doctormo Thanks for quick response and for your videos! Please, don’t get me wrong, I’m very much rooting for Inkscape but lack of CMS & and native CMYK immediately turns off any professional user. I’ve been using Freehand, Illustrator and Corel since ’92 (mostly Freehand), but I still don’t get why is so hard to use libs and code like Little CMS and Scribus have? Anyway, thanks for hard work!
@doctormo2 ай бұрын
@@vmisev If you watch the videos, I go through many, many, many of the problems that getting CMS into proper shape is requiring. I've done almost nothing but CMYK and CMS for more than a year now on inkscape and it is a bit insulting to say that you don't know why it's hard. I know you don't mean this insult, but it hurts all the same. FWIW; Inkscape has supported CMYK CMS for ten years, no one uses it because it's badly designed and you can't use the CMYK svg files in anything else, so what's the point. What you want isn't CMS, it's PDF output and a UX that doesn't suck. Using LittleCMS is the easy part, that's why it was done all those years ago. The best video to watch is the interview I did with the project historian Josh Andler.
@vmisev2 ай бұрын
@@doctormo Hey, sorry! It wasn’t my intention to hurt you, not at all. I’m not a dev; I know my sh, awk and some basic Python, but that’s it - I’m not trying to look down on your hard work. I said “I still don’t get why is so hard” not as someone who knows how to do it, but as someone who is exporting CMYK EPS (and later PDF) from all kinds of programs on various OSes for more than three decades (yes, I’m PS Level 1 old ;) ). As I said, I very much appreciate any work on OpenSource (I’m FreeBSD user myself), especially for the projects I care about, like Inkscape, so please don’t get offended, my only wish is that Inscape succeeds. To use OpenSource in the reprographics environments/workflows only decent vector editor is needed - Scribus and Krita are very much usable and Little CMS is decent and getting better, and we have a myriad of diff pdf and ps libs. And not only OSS, world in general needs good vector editor, because IMHO there is none since Adobe killed Freehand. I hate only whining, so is it there anything that I, as a non-dev, can help with?
@doctormo2 ай бұрын
@@vmisev I have a Patreon or LiberaPay that you can join in order to help me spend time on the project. It's taking longer than expected, but it should be really comprehensive when it's complete. The real problem for us is that Scribus wrote it's own pdf code and didn't share, and Krita doesn't have to support vectors to the same degree. There's a bunch of really technical reasons and blind alleys that previous inkscape developers drove down that means the whole thing is a rebuild from scratch while pulling apart all the old code to keep everything working. Thanks for your understanding.

Make mirror drawing simple and obvious like in Krita, or better. Make folders for color sets, inside the palette. And already give the ability to choose the shape and size of the markers of the selection container (which appears when selecting and rotating an object or objects). Allow the user to choose at least from 4 shapes: the terrible double-headed arrow, a square, a triangle and a circle. I am writing through a translator.

Has the point of origin put in the bottom left and 0degree is pointing north as per normal tech drawing setup
@doctormo2 ай бұрын
I can't see why that's not the case if you set the document to origin bottom-left.
@PeppertopComics2 ай бұрын
This option has been present for a while, but it may require you to change a value in the Inkscape preferences dialog. It's in the 'Interface' pane, "Origin at upper left with y-axis pointing down" - uncheck that, then quit and restart Inkscape. The origin in the top-left is due to Inkscape's heritage as an SVG editor, and SVG is a largely web-oriented format used in web browsers. On a browser the page starts at the top left and grows downwards, causing a scrollbar to appear if necessary. Switching this option won't actually change the SVG files, so they'll still be based on a top-left origin and be transparently mapped when loaded into Inkscape.
@mitchhoneysett76742 ай бұрын
@doctormo I did that, but the compass point 0 degree is still on the horizontal. Should be at bottom left in start.
