Aged 12 in 1980, I went to Poland and saw my first ever steam locomotive in action. What stuck in my mind was that I could see under the boiler; effectively seeing right through the locomotive to whatever was happening on the other side. It felt weird and almost freakish. I realised later that my only relationship to steam locomotives up until this point were Hornby model trains. These model steam locomotives were made via a kind of one piece jelly mould for cheapness that didn't allow for this sort of detail.

I'm 73 now my house was the first on the Island next to the petrol station, I used to sit up in bed and watch the Billy go by in the mornings, my playground was underneath the turntable in the centre of the bridge and get rained on with rust as the train went overhead . Beecham used the excuse that the bridge was unsafe so they had to close the line, after removing all the timber superstructure they brought in the Royal Navy to blow up the concrete pillars, there was the biggest bang you have ever heard and if you go and inspect those pillars today you will see not a scratch. Unsafe bridge eh?

The Havant to Hayling Island line was IIRC closed in November 1963, It is listed in the Beeching 1 report issued in March 1963; a report was based on a survey of both freight and passenger traffic loadings on the BR network week ending 23 April 1961. The report lists Beeching and his staffs' recommendations. Now Section 6 (page 130) lists the Passenger Services under Consideration for Withdrawal before the Formulation of the Report, which lists the line as a candidate for closure. As such it can be considered as a Branchline committee closure.

A lefthander have a huge long term memory was just 8 & went with Mum on the Cornish Riviera Express hauled by the magnificent Kings .For a pack of cigarettes to crew of the then green liveried Mallard We boarded the foot plate at King's Cross Station & was allowed to blow her whistle ,when much younger travelled on the now gone Tollesbury to Kelvedon light railway ,on a veranda carriage , Mum smoked woodbines then .Its main problem was so many level crossings & the stopping for yarns with ( now gone ) Osborne bus drivers & passengers , King George 6th used it to see the defences ,especially the famous hexagonal tower with homing radio & A.A guns on top, what were they thinking ? That Adolf wanted to invade Tollesbury ,sadly the pier was allowed to rot away,in its early day used by Eduardians as a boat departure point !
