Hi Erin, those are Fodera steel round wounds, light medium. I went all out 😊 flat wounds are a bit old fashioned and are only if you never want to hit a high note. If I have the choice again, I go for nickel. They glide and slide smoother and are a bit gentler.

The thing i would go ask to the team were to send the bass unfinished. Their glossy poly finish is horrible and i hate coated neck. i would do some oil finish and wax by myself for really better result in terms of feel and look. it's easy and anyone can do it.

When it arrived, it looked good, but played really bad (cheap on everything) ....you get what you pay for. So the bass was made by a woodworker without luthier knowledge? I't s bad enough having to updgrade pickups etc on low and mid cost basses. But at least those basses are constructed corectly. What I am seeing on Aliexpress bass reviews are super wide necks. I prefer an original P bass neck over the J bass neck width. I have an American Standard Fender active 5 string J bass. It seems a bit wide compared ro my other 5 string basses. I also saw on other reviews that some AliExpress basses pickup and string centering over the pick up having to be altered causing the necks to look even wider.
@BassCave72 ай бұрын
I would say a regular woodworker could not do this kind of work. It is not perfect, but it is really good where it matters, neck playability, neck angle, neck stability. I have one AliExpress Bass that is very much beyond saving anything. It is just gathering dust. This can happen too.

WHY ??? Why are people continually making videos to promote, intentionally or unintentionally, these rip-off fakes? It would be acceptable IF they didn’t put the brand name or logo on the headstock. If someone tried to sell you a fake Rolex with the Rolex name on it, you would call that an attempted rip-off.
@BassCave73 ай бұрын
I thought about this long and hard, because I also would not buy a knock off Rolex. 1. You can have them customized, which works... Most of the time. 2. The value for money is great, once you fixed them up they are actually great instruments. 3. The big volume brands produce in Asia anyway. I think it's good the whole purchase price goes there, rather big corporations keeping all the margins. But you are right, the shape of body and head are ripped off, I won't buy them again.

@@BassCave7 I really appreciate your intelligently conveyed opinions. I just really hope these instruments don’t cause problems in the future when they’re resold. Some folks might be tempted to take advantage of a person who is unaware of these copies. Plus I worry about the sales of these instruments undermining the economics of small but very important American companies, and also undermining the American economy, however slightly. I wonder how many more industries in the US have this same issue. It could all add up to a real mess. Let’s also encourage each other to record our own REAL music ! Where’s the satisfaction in using these chord packs or whatever you call these AI produced keyboard and bass generating software? Yes, I use drum software, but I have been teaching myself enough keys to play the piano/synth parts. So 3 cheers for all of us real artists !!!

Took a chance on this particular model, Rene. You also made it sound like 1 million bucks to use American alanguage. Possibly, if I had them disposable moolah, I would have the personnel at the successor to Carvin, Kiesel, build me a model along the specifications of this particular bass. Only, I would have it built headless and with an adapter at the top end so I could use my strings of choice. Furthermore, I would tune the bottom six strings in accordance with standard guitar tuning, not E-A-D-G-C-F.

Hey nice bass, sounds great. Looks good for practicing modes all the way up the neck. Anyway that's the reason I'm building a small scale seven string. An eleven string from the low F# would be progressive for practicing. I have an Ibanez seven string converted into a five with tuning F#BEAD. That spacious spacing is close to 3/4 of an inch! And someday I'll get some advice on what pickups to install. An acoustic resonator five string with this spacious space and neck profile perhaps. I'm sawing some silver maple in back for future projects.

Hi! The instrument you own looks very much as a De Oliveira bass, a small Brazilian basses company from Natal, capital of the Northeast state of Rio Grande do Norte. The 12th fret logo looks very much like the logo they use on their instruments. They have a KZbin official channel (Portuguese only, I'm afraid). If you feel like it, check them out. Cheers!
@BassCave75 ай бұрын
Ouh you are right, I already found out a while back. I was really disappointed because the bass did not look like a knock off like they usually have on AliExpress. They had a brand name "Flyoung" so I thought it was original. Sadly still a copy, I will buy them no more. Admittedly, the two basses I have, 6 string, 6 string fretless are really tops, play well, sound great. The electronics were completely disfunctional, butbeasy to replace.

Hey buddy, one more thing the way the strings are wound up more than three times. It's best for resonance but more stress on the truss rod. Probably try and save the string's and detention all string's and shorten the wraps around the tuner's.
@BassCave75 ай бұрын
Hey Mario, I agree as much winding as possible (without a mess) sometimes I make a bad judgement and it's close. :) My teacher back in the day told me this way the strings hold the tuning better. And when you have more winding the string comes from a lower position to the nut, thus having a stronger angle causing less unwanted resonance.
@marioduron43765 ай бұрын
@@BassCave7 Actually I also went with similar winding earlier. I'm still not certain about it. But the extra winding seems to add tension. I guess guys might argue it but it's personal preference. There's different directions you can take instruments and most lend itself to a certain tonal direction. I definitely like the extra down tension sometimes but it's not totally nessasery. You know changing the tuners might be good for better down tension like you mentioned. Gotoh tuners are great because of the taper they provide the strings. Well different instruments work with different hardware.

Hey friend nice well mannered review! And I had a good experience with the ltd 208 I was shipped back in 2022. Though the Dean twelve string is slightly higher caliber. The ltd I have doesn't have any problems. The original strings were low quality but that's expected. And the action is really superb on the instrument I have. But I agree it would be great to have a replacement option for the bridge. I was just going to say I love the body size and shape and the neck feel. But I love this bass for heavy funk slap. I mean I decided to use it as just a four string. And it'd be great to use this bass as an entry to the contra bass. But the eq is really good for slap. Also, with any Indonesian bass keep in mind the instrument will loose weight while it dries out. And things will change for the better. But you got to be pretty patient with it. You know, I got forced air and dehumidifiers just like a professional music store. It's all necessary with a proper investment in instruments. Well I understood the rarity of certain basses, but no need for anything exotic. I got everything I need.

Thank you for the insight! I once had a Dean Edge 8 string bass. Apart from the noisy pickups, which I replaced, this one was a dream to play. I rue the day I sold it. It is surprising to hear your one was fine, the neck joint just seems to be simply planned wrong. All that I can fault on mine after my repair jobs is just one bum fret. Let me figure out how to fix that :)
@marioduron43765 ай бұрын
@@BassCave7 I'm glad that you featured the eight string. And I have no clue about the neck joint. I'll be interested to see how you shimmed the neck. I don't know how common it is to have a neck joint problem. And I wonder if the shim changes the sustain at all. Also the Dean twelve string has active EMG pickups and a brass nut. And if ever you're in Oregon you could check out my basses.
@BassCave75 ай бұрын
Hi the shimming of the neck is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3qykqVsmd6hfNk Overall it was a success, only thing to complain are a couple of frets, which have not been put in right. I live in Australia, so much for popping by. But you will laugh, I have frequent dealings in Oregon, out data center is there. I there a lot, but only virtually :))
@marioduron43765 ай бұрын
@@BassCave7 And I recognize the talent you have. And humans are not all the same. As basic as my comments are, there's a formula to the coherence. I'll watch the shimming video, but for right now I really think you could let the eight string dry a while. Maybe you could eliminate the shim later. But for now cheers from Oregon country and I'm cutting some silver maple for future bass projects. I'm here for you, if ever you embrace Oregon country as a home or second home to Australia. It's all a trade off no matter where you live.
