It is also my understanding the AC4400CW Supplys power to the rest of the train as well as a helper. I have 4014 in HO scale made by Rivarossi. Just a heads up for you the American Diesel that the Big Boy uses is there Not for Power movement it's there because of FRA standard Ruling of any mainline train depending on weight to scale ratio on Grades needs a certain amount of Braking as the Big Boy uses that Diesel as Back-up emergency braking support so a runaway doesn't happen as well as telling what the train is doing by speed to braking ect with onboard (PTC) - "Positive Train Control" check it out to understand it more. All American Diesels can be shut down by a press of a button from hundreds of miles away by a single Dispatcher as the Big Boy can't do that because it's more manual working. The 2010 Movie Unstoppable is based off the May 15th 2001 CSX SD40-2 incident no.8888 Runaway that happened in Ohio, every Diesel after 2001 had an electric shut-down kill switch added to them and PTC, stopping all or any incident of a Runaway ever happening again, steam engines don't have that option hence the reasons behind a diesel running with them on major Grades, as some Steam engines don't have a Diesel is because the Grades on that line aren't ratio bad as the engine wouldn't pick up massive amounts of speed. Hope this has helped you understand reasons behind the Diesel Operating with Steam theory.
