Hello Mike, I enjoyed your felted hat making videos tremendously. Thank you for sharing! In one of your videos you mention that you sell the shaping cones. Is it possible to order one?

@perlablub Hi Perla. Thanks for your lovely comment. I'm afraid I don't make them anymore. Hatshapers in the US make them. I don't use ABS blocks now, but prefer rigid extruded (not expanded) polystyrene blocks as it is more easily customisable. You can make a shaping dome from this too. Have a look at my hat block videos.

Thank you so much for your swift reply, Mike.Such a pity you don’t make them anymore. Why, why, why did you give up?😢 I’ve watched your videos on block making as well, but I’m afraid it’s lost on me. Have a lovely boxing day.

I came into about 200+ pounds of raw merino that i wanted to try and get professionally processed, but boy was that gonna get pricey... wife was telling me to sell it raw, but i wasnt going to waste this much free wool for a few measly dollars... This Christmas, shes getting a new hat. Then she'll have to let me keep it all!!! 😂👍
@donutpanic21 күн бұрын
@Honest_Grifter Good man! Merino should felt really well. You can dye it once it's more or less felted stage then do the final blocking.

I called machinery suppliers in Bradford, which historically was a centre for textiles. The place I found had two other similar sized machines, but the other two were in better shape and more expensive as they have a second life carding seaweed fibre for wound dressings - who knew! I had to do a bit of work on the carder and added a three phase motor, powered by a single-to-three phase inverter with a speed controller to power it.

Hi Mike, I am new to this but would like to make myself a pirate hat. Where is the best place to get the material needed please. I would like to be as traditional as possible and learn the original ways to make one. Any tips would be gratefully received. Thanks
@donutpanicАй бұрын
@andynicholls7201 Hi Andy. Are you in UK? From your use of please and thank you I think perhaps you might be! I use alpaca fibre (wool) for my hats. There are plenty of alpaca farms around who should be able to help, if not search for felting supplies online where you are likely to find merino wool. The block is made from extruded (not expanded) polystyrene (XPS). Available from Panel Systems in the UK. Let me know if I can help further.
@johnp.turner2000 Hi John. I can't remember where but details of the extruded (not expanded) polystyrene (xps) are included in a few of my videos. It's a common insulating and modelling material. Thanks.

Could you not make it faster by using a small 'vibrator' [not circular] sanding machine over the top of the bubble wrap with an extra layer of fabric to prevent the bubble wrap from shredding?

@TheNext100Feet I'm not, but I prefer to use rigid xps foam now as it is easy to make them to any size. I have videos on making them. Alternatively in the USA you can buy abs blocks from Hatshapers.

@@donutpanic Wow, thanks for the input! I was surprised to see you respond and I very much appreciate it. Second question for you. I am a beaver trapper and I have pelts that I would like to felt. However, I'm trying to figure out how I would separate the guard hairs from the undercoat to make felt without a de-hairing machine. I will shave the long bits with a pair of shears, but unsure aside from that. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks again!

Crazy question. Can you make a piece of felt fabric from wool that is bad quality, with short fibres? I should say why. I have started buying excellent cat food that comes frozen. Around the box is this wool in various colours of grey. I can't bear to throw it away. I do many crafts professionally, but I have never tried wet felting. I also need to know if I can dye this wool. Any ideas?
@donutpanic5 ай бұрын
@kerryhorwitz4093 It's easy enough to make a small test sample to find out. Lay out a 100 mm or so square. Once it has started to felt roll it between your hands.

Depending on how high you want the crown, you might struggle to go from a circular lay out like I use, and you might be better to form a hood first by laying out two sides of a resist and then blocking.

If I want my hat to eventually fit a person with a 59 head, do I make the block to 60 to allow for the sweatband? thx
@donutpanic10 ай бұрын
I'd make it to 59, then make the sweatband to the exact size. The felt will have enough give when you sew the band in.
@picturesteve39810 ай бұрын
@@donutpanic I also see that you use a very thin sweatband material. I will be using leather not sure if that makes any difference in your response. thx for your reply
@donutpanic10 ай бұрын
@picturesteve398 I suspected that would be the case! Perhaps size the sweatband to start with, measure its outside diameter and make the block to that size. I suspect though that you'll be better off needing to expand the felt a little rather than trying to lose some excess when sewing in the band.

You would have to try a sample to see if it felted. I use alpaca, which are members of the camelid family. It takes any where between 1 1/2 to 3 hours to make a hat from start to finish.
