Thank you for this, I have loads of un carded fleece and was thinking of trying to make hubby a felted top hat for Christmas but hating the idea of all the carding!! 👍

As always the more care you take laying up, the better the quality of the felt. You can get good results without carding. You only need 5 oz if you do decide to card. I hope he likes the hat!

Can you get the same quality felt hat by using sheep wool rather than alpaca? Is there any difference in procedure?
@donutpanic8 ай бұрын
Sheep wool would be more commonly used than alpaca. Same process.

Where can I buy a big bag of fleece like that???

Call any alpaca breeder and ask.

Will you be showing any videos on how you card the wool? I know this is weird, but I have a donkey, and it would be neat to take his extra fur and felt a hat. Thanks for the videos.

This will be of no help really, but this is how I do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anvXamhvqLStp9E No doubt a search for wool carding will produce some helpful videos. I am keen to see your finished donkey hat!

What are those hand tools you're using called?
@donutpanic3 жыл бұрын
They are ceramic tools that I make myself. I call the brim tool a ceramic toliker, but not sure whether that is strictly correct! I take it that you are in the US?
@christophercorleone92923 жыл бұрын
@@donutpanic That is correct. Would you recommend getting a glass washboard and developing tools from it like you have?
@donutpanic3 жыл бұрын
@@christophercorleone9292 a glass washboard is fantastic for working the felt. I have reverse cast the surface with plaster of paris for some of the tools, but I find a smoother, ribbed surface works better for the hand tools. The ceramic toliker makes creating a wrinkle-free brim much easier.
