I wonder how hard it can get to replace a square-taper inner BB with an external bearings (like on the video). Because removing square-tapered BBs can be a pain after some riding time.

BTW, your eccentric and BB shell(s) are REALLY dry! Grease, grease, and more grease!!!
@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 7 жыл бұрын
Don't mean to be a jerk, but there's a better way - and a way that doesn't require removing the cranks and bottom bracket. Anyone who owns a bike or tandem with a wedge eccentric will benefit from my advice below. On wedge eccentrics, the wedge gets firmly wedged into the BB shell. They don't "break free" after loosening the cinch bolt and applying rotating force to the eccentric, right? Of course it doesn't break free, the wedge is in there really tight and has to be - you're applying major pedaling forces to the eccentric, it has to be tight! Well, there's a REALLY easy fix to dislodge it without bending the cinch bolt. First, disregard ANY advice that suggests hammering on the cinch bolt to dislodge the wedge. This will only bend or damage the long bolt, the barrel nut and/or the eccentric and frame. You'll eventually smash your frame, too, so NO hammers ! Instead, simply thread a water bottle cage bolt through the OTHER side of the eccentric as you back out the long cinch bolt. Ever notice the cinch bolt hole extends ALL the way through the eccentric body? Now you know why! But first, you have to run the bottle cage bolt through something flat with a hole in it first. (A small Park cone wrench works perfectly.) This will stop on the BB shell and brace the bolt head so you can apply force on the wedge to dislodge it. Also be sure to apply ample grease to the bolt threads and even the head. Screw the bolt into the barrel nut in the eccentric from the other side as you remove the cinch bolt from the other side. Don't just remove the cinch bolt all the way. Back it out as you screw the bottle bolt in from the other side. You want to do this so the barrel bolt doesn't accidentally rotate inside the eccentric, making it impossible to thread in any bolt from either side! Once you've gotten the bottle bolt threaded, remove the long cinch bolt. Then tighten down the bottle bolt until the flat surface of the cone wrench stops against the BB shell. You now have a ready-made "eccentric wedge puller!" Turn the bolt until the wedge breaks free and you can now adjust your eccentric. Use a green Park pin tool for easy tension adjustment. However, before adjusting tension, remove your custom puller and reinstall the original wedge cinch bolt - with ample grease of course! (And if you haven't had the eccentric & wedge out in a while, you should probably pull lit and slather it with waterproof grease EVERYWHERE (on the sliding surfaces of the wedge, the barrel nut, and the BB shell and wedge exterior so that it does not seize in place! This will allow for easier future adjustments.) Now with the wedge bolt threaded back in place, you can make tension adjustments and lightly cinch the bolt to hold that position to check chain deflection. Then tighten it down firmly, wipe off the grease that has oozed out and you're off to the races!

Nice one.. Just discovered this bike online today and am very keen. It will be this or a Cube Aim SL 29er. Tell me Dj or any other bad boy rider out there.. how does this bike perform up hills or long flat straights? How does it handle speed bumps or going down the odd pavement? I’ll be doing some city riding. But would like to be able to take the bike on flat roads, short tours so to speak. Thanks a lot.. Cheers

Fun review, thanks. That single ring mod you did - did you also need to upgrade the crank setup or did you just swap the wheel? Does the chain fell at all? Thanks for info! I am about to get BB3 and the 3 wheel setup looks horrific on it!

I have a badboy and want to remove the front derailleur and 2 of the cogs. Any tips, will I need a chain keeper?
@loft4me
@loft4me 9 жыл бұрын
Ej fearn I removed the large chain ring and granny gear on my vintage Klein, along with the front derailleur and Rock Shox, in an attempt to change my bike over to something more road-worthy (read less weight). In converting your bike, you would not need any additional devices to retain the current shift pattern from your rear derailleur, nor would you need to alter the chain in any way. If you are going to try and lighten your bike, think about your wheelset and tires first, then later your components. But deleting my chain rings, front derailleur, front shifter and the associated cabling, I saw a good reduction of weight, without a ride-affecting compromise because of the lack of these parts (mainly the loss of those chain rings). Think it over, and match your bike to the type of terrain and riding style that you foresee in the future, with an eye towards weight savings with unnecessary expenditures, and I think you will be okay with the outcome.

I agree with you. It's a simple stylish bike that does not catch a lot of attention compared to colorful hardtails , full suspension or road bikes out there. I hope to get me one Badboy soon probably before summer :) I hope!!! I like the light weight bike with 700C that drives like a road bike but with a riding ergonomics of a mountain bike = Hybrid.

I bought a Pro900L in late 2012 partly based on this review. The light was bright, seemed well machined, and the only real weakness seemed to be the strap on the battery to mount to bike frame. However, after a few months of use I found the battery drained. This turned out to be due to water ingress, which I put down to the front cap not being torqued sufficiently. It happened again, and then the switch stopped working properly. I suspected corrosion behind the light fitting inside. On removing the internal fitting significant corrosion was evident, and the complete lack of any seal around the cable:in the wet, water can come straight in through the bottom of the light. I am extremely curious as to how the review here manages to immerse the light in a bowl of water; if my light was manufactured as standard there is no way it would continue to operate as it would short the PCB on the rear of the LED fitting.

Quality video and review love the music. Well on the back of this review I went out and brought a cannondale 29er 2014 and I love it absolutely quality bike. First ride out on the bad boy and all I had in my head was this track and a big smile on my face. This bike defo gets a lot of looks from those in the know. Cheers for posting

Hi There, I watched this video backin 2012 when I was considering buying a bad boy. You're video was the final push to me getting an r4. Since then I've ridden it pretty much every work day across the mean streets of Sheffield. In two years nothing has broke, each day I get on it, ride it and get off. no worries or concerns ! The hydraulic discs have saved my bacon a number of times. If you're wanting a bike that does the job with fun then consider this bike. I'm writing this because this video has proved very accurate and true - the bike does the job - no faffing but leaves a big smile.

At 3:20 I think your looking for the word "reflective" lol. Mad review, I got the bb5 XL leftie not long ago. Im 6'6"/250pounds and I abuse the thing at every oppertunity, look for every short cut to uni I can find... Down stairs, violently hopping of the curb at speed, cutting through dirt/stone paths and have not even the slightest buckel (one bent spoke). The bike is fast and the speed I do lose with this bike compared to a true road bike I make up in short cuts. Only issue is the thick slicks have left me on my ass riding too fast over wet grass... Love this bike.

ok, i have one of these, and although i do love the bike itself, but the components are bottom shelf stuff even though its shimano. i dont understand why owners video all the bikes components, because its cheep stuff that does work good but cheap just to keep the price down.i didnt buy it because of its components that make it go, but because C'Dale makes great frames, i always change all the shimano stuff for a mix of other components that makes my bike different from the rest, its what i do ok

I actually bought one for my wife, petite size... I know its a bad boy, but I can see myself riding it as well as she does... I have a Specialized FSR XC to go trail riding and also I'm a Specialized rider through and through, but after seeing this bike and the bike shop giving me a good price, it's a steal... I love the weight, the looks and I cannot wait to ride it lol...
