Cannondale Bad Boy Review

Well I think I really need to start this with...and now for something completely different, seeing as we are MTBTV not hybridTV but I think I can resist.
Anyway this is the footage from a couple of rides out on the cannondale badboy as well as a bit of a natter from me at the end. Its all part of our review which can be found here:

I also soooooo wanted to use the whole badboy for life tune on the video but everytime I did you tube kept shutting the audio off so I plumped for a nice little bit of grimey dnb.
A grimey urban tune for a grimey urban bike - Perfect.
Hey I even tried to compliment it by not shaving....

i have been riding these bikes for 5 years now, and just brought a new one, and i have had them all, orange, gary fisher, trek,and i must say the bad boy is the best bike of them all, i would not ride anything else

Nice one.. Just discovered this bike online today and am very keen. It will be this or a Cube Aim SL 29er. Tell me Dj or any other bad boy rider out there.. how does this bike perform up hills or long flat straights? How does it handle speed bumps or going down the odd pavement? I’ll be doing some city riding. But would like to be able to take the bike on flat roads, short tours so to speak. Thanks a lot.. Cheers

Hi There, I watched this video backin 2012 when I was considering buying a bad boy. You're video was the final push to me getting an r4. Since then I've ridden it pretty much every work day across the mean streets of Sheffield. In two years nothing has broke, each day I get on it, ride it and get off. no worries or concerns ! The hydraulic discs have saved my bacon a number of times. If you're wanting a bike that does the job with fun then consider this bike. I'm writing this because this video has proved very accurate and true - the bike does the job - no faffing but leaves a big smile.

this review really hits the point. i own one myself and think it is the perfect city bike. someone really put some effort in developping it. beginning with the tires up to the seat position really perfect for its purpose!

@StumpyHead79 Mate I've ridden the Cannondale Flash's, the scalpel and Jekyll. And I have to say I love the Cannondales and the lefty fork as it runs as smooth as butter. However I say anything about Specialized bikes as I've not ridden any of them. So my only advice is go try them out sit on them and see which one feel the best. Or whatever one looks good when you look at your reflection in a shop window as you ride past :)

@DJbombscare Haha Extra 10 miles to work? It's Sunday, and with a bit of time on my hands I've just cycled down to the office and back on the new bike - adding a few mile to the trip for fun - the Bad Boy effect or what? :-) I bought this to be road bike-style runs in town, without having to get all the kit on. You were DEAD RIGHT, that's what it does. Road bike handling but without the hassles. GREAT bike!

Don't suppose you know anything of Cube do you? I've seen one for about the same money that look the mut's nuts. But I don't know them.

I agree with you. It's a simple stylish bike that does not catch a lot of attention compared to colorful hardtails , full suspension or road bikes out there. I hope to get me one Badboy soon probably before summer :) I hope!!! I like the light weight bike with 700C that drives like a road bike but with a riding ergonomics of a mountain bike = Hybrid.

Hi Rumeel12708 - right the answer is basically they are the same bike just different colours and the 6 is running acera gears, which doesn't make that much difference. So you may as well choose the one you like the look of best. If you think your gonna upgrade all the bits on it then theres no harm going for a lower spec model. I went for the lowest spec carbon flash 29er and put all my x0 gear on it, and sold all the gear it came with. Hope the helps mate

@hdocspoc Hi & thanks for the comment. I've not ridden the quicks but from what I can see it looks a bit more roadie with flat bars whereas the badboy is more mtb with road wheels. To give the thumbs up to the badboy if you think you might go a little bit light trail on the weekends then go with the BB, & take look at the 26" wheel option. if its road work all the way than maybe the quick could fit the bill better. Just try em both out & go for the 1 that floats your boat. Hope that helps

I have a badboy and want to remove the front derailleur and 2 of the cogs. Any tips, will I need a chain keeper?

Ej fearn I removed the large chain ring and granny gear on my vintage Klein, along with the front derailleur and Rock Shox, in an attempt to change my bike over to something more road-worthy (read less weight). In converting your bike, you would not need any additional devices to retain the current shift pattern from your rear derailleur, nor would you need to alter the chain in any way. If you are going to try and lighten your bike, think about your wheelset and tires first, then later your components. But deleting my chain rings, front derailleur, front shifter and the associated cabling, I saw a good reduction of weight, without a ride-affecting compromise because of the lack of these parts (mainly the loss of those chain rings). Think it over, and match your bike to the type of terrain and riding style that you foresee in the future, with an eye towards weight savings with unnecessary expenditures, and I think you will be okay with the outcome.

I really love ur video,I gonna grab a bad boy home! But,you know,I lived in HongKong,which is very crowded city and the drainage cover got some pits on it.if ur wheel stuck in when riding , we will surely fall and break our arms or sth..... So I wanna know more about the stability of badboy when riding on the uneven roadside.....I rode rb but really scared of crash as the tires is really really thin and skinny......

At 3:20 I think your looking for the word "reflective" lol. Mad review, I got the bb5 XL leftie not long ago. Im 6'6"/250pounds and I abuse the thing at every oppertunity, look for every short cut to uni I can find... Down stairs, violently hopping of the curb at speed, cutting through dirt/stone paths and have not even the slightest buckel (one bent spoke). The bike is fast and the speed I do lose with this bike compared to a true road bike I make up in short cuts. Only issue is the thick slicks have left me on my ass riding too fast over wet grass... Love this bike.

Mate I'm sure it wont disappoint. I currently only have the bad boy as all my mtbs are gone as I want to focus on getting soem mile sunder my belt to improve my fitness, and if I have the opportunity to get some off road action I'm easily distracted. So its my only ride, and every time I got out, I come back knackered but grinning I still love it :)

@TheMaunzi I ride DMR vaults on absolutely everything. Although at the time of the video the badboy was running a cheap pair that it came with. I just prefer flat pedal to SPD's and on a commuter urban-ish bike I'm not pushing for those extra valuable seconds per mile like I would on a road or xc race bike. Nope I'm happy with flat pedals 5-10's or vans and a nice ride

Thanks mate and glad you like it. Right the tune is a Callide remix of badboy sound. Its a 2009 track and was out on dreadnought. However its bound to be sold out on vinyl (sorry I'm an old skool dj) but you can get it on Itunes a simple search for badboy sound brought it up . So hope that helps

I actually bought one for my wife, petite size... I know its a bad boy, but I can see myself riding it as well as she does... I have a Specialized FSR XC to go trail riding and also I'm a Specialized rider through and through, but after seeing this bike and the bike shop giving me a good price, it's a steal... I love the weight, the looks and I cannot wait to ride it lol...

I got the 2012 with the lefty fork! I like the shock, very nice on crappy roads. Solid bike. I roll it all over LA and I love it is not all road-bike looking. Very good looking too.

@934505 glad you like it and thanks for the compliment. I did look at the quick cx but its seemed a bit more road to me, so opted for the badboy. Probably one of the best decisions I've ever made cycling wise : )

ok, i have one of these, and although i do love the bike itself, but the components are bottom shelf stuff even though its shimano. i dont understand why owners video all the bikes components, because its cheep stuff that does work good but cheap just to keep the price down.i didnt buy it because of its components that make it go, but because C'Dale makes great frames, i always change all the shimano stuff for a mix of other components that makes my bike different from the rest, its what i do ok

Thanks for this great review - I'm sorely tempted to get an Ultra. I ride a road bike at the weekends and use an old MB in town which is great because it's not likely to get nicked, but I love the speed of a road bike. This looks just the ticket .. BTW Digger must be pleased - the Bad Boy mat black matches his coat a treat :-)

Quality video and review love the music. Well on the back of this review I went out and brought a cannondale 29er 2014 and I love it absolutely quality bike. @mandreolo Hi mate this one is the bottom of the range badboy 9 as its known now. Its the disc brake 700c rim model with a stiff front fork. Hope that helps mate.
