Your carburettor is minus the heat shield plate beneath it. This appears to have an asbestos style material which soaks up any fuel spillage. Your criticism of the fuel pipe is correct. I have replaced mine with bunny which is clamped to back of engine lift and has soft links to fuel pump and carburettor. Some people use soft hose across front of engine but this brings it within 4mm of fan which is potential disaster. As I understand it the clutch slave is the wrong side of the engine housing. Specialists in USA and Blighty say it should be other side and the slave operates further down the cylinder. When you take off the water pump castings lay them on a flat surface, like a piece of heavy glass, would be a flat windscreen in the old days, and check for truth. Inaccuracies may be rubbed out using carborundum paper or valve grinding past. The big aluminium shell might well move slightly after dismantling. What I am learning is never trust what you see because somebody else has been there before you!

Thanks for the comments and the advice. Will look into flattening the thermostat housing at some stage. Good idea regarding the valve grinding paste as an abrasive.

@@everything-hillman66 I am impressed you can still get them. I had a struggle finding any c.1971. In the end I found some adjustables made by Armstrong. The fronts had 3 click adjustments that needed a screwdriver, but the supplier could only get hold of electrically controlled Adjustarides for the rear. They had a 3 position rotary switch, and needed wiring, but he sold them to me at the same price as the manual adjustables would have been. Both were just right on the middle position. To my amazement Armstrong still seems to exist. a brand I thought had long vanished from the UK market. No idea what quality is like now, but the ones I had were excellent.

I had to replace the worm drive at the gearbox end on my 1963 Superminx Convertible - c 1972 when I did this :-) It was nylon and was sliipping on some worn teeth c65,000ml.. @@everything-hillman66 I imagine the bent cable end could cause the pinion to wobble when rotating and wear unevenly. So it could just be one tooth that's a bit worn and slipping at times.. TBH I think that cable end could easily be straightened with a bit of gentle vice and plier action. It's not frayed so just regrease and replace - but don't grease the 2" near the speedo head. It can climb up the cable and into the instrument = not good.

You need a workshop manual methinks the pivot pin in the door for the 1/4 lights can be tightened up I replaced the rubbers on my 59 Minx and the Superminx is similar, theres a guy in Aussie who moulds all rubbers for Hillmans new, I had some of those xply tyres on spare rims, I gave one to the guy who used to own the grey wagon youve seen, its probably still under it, rims on my estate are steel grey sans trims they dont fit 14 inch rims yours are 13s but I see youve noticed they are bigger diameter thats why your speedo reads slow, some rims were body colour I have my original Superminx rims on my trailer and they have been body colour once upon a time, nice original car. Just see this. My father had a 65 Super Minx his father imported into NZ from England new. It was white with red interior with the 1600 engine. The floor shift gear lever was straight rather than curved like the NZ ones. It also had only one strip of chrome down the sides. It had the flat back window like this one. Between me and my late father and grandfather we owned 13 Hillman and Humber's ( 10's and 80's). My first car in 1974 was a 61 IIIB Minx and in the late 70's a 70 Hunter. In the later 90's to 2004 I owned a very original unmolested IIIB Humber 80 as a classic. I did not sell that out of choice but did so due to a change in marital status and loss of garage, I didn't want to keep it outside. Great cars and recognised as having a better build quality than it's competitors at the time, in fact it has been said they were "over engineered". . Now subscribed.
